A procura incansável por respostas diante do inexplicável, como doença, morte e consolo para as aflições do dia-a-dia, leva homens e mulheres ao encontro de experiências que escapam da esfera terrena e entram no plano do sagrado. Dentre a diversidade de manifestações, o movimento pentecostal ganha a cada ano visibilidade social, possibilitando às igrejas evangélicas pentecostais ocuparem mais e maiores espaços na sociedade brasileira. Algumas dessas igrejas ampliaram seu campo de ação, não limitando suas atividades ao interior do templo e adotando ações diversificadas, como por exemplo, a assistência social. Afinal, muitos de seus membros apresentavam dificuldades de diferentes ordens e era preciso dar uma resposta às suas demandas, seja espiritual ou material. A partir desta constatação, surgiu o interesse de compreender como o aumento do pentecostalismo na sociedade brasileira repercute em diferentes setores, mais especificamente na área da assistência social. Assim, definiu-se como objetivo geral da pesquisa investigar as motivações dos pastores das igrejas pentecostais para desenvolverem atividades assistenciais junto à população carente do Município de Londrina, no período de 1970 a 1990. Foram selecionadas somente as igrejas que fundaram e mantêm instituições assistenciais porque suas ações exigiram organização e planejamento, ou seja, uma compreensão mínima dos trâmites legais e uma concepção minimamente elaborada do significado de assistência social, excluindo, desta forma, aquelas que se limitam à distribuição de cestas básicas, roupas e remédios. The tireless search for answers before the inexplicable, as disease, death and comfort for the afflictions of the day by day, takes men and women to the encounter of experiences that they escape from the terrestrial sphere and they enter in the plan of the sacred. Among the diversity of manifestations, the pentecostal movement wins every year social visibility, making possible to the churches evangelical pentecostals occupy more and larger spaces in the Brazilian society. Some of those churches enlarged action field, not limiting their activities to the interior of the temple and adopting diversified actions, as for instance, the social work. After all, many of their members presented difficulties of different orders and it was necessary to give an answer to their demands, be spiritual or material. Starting from this verification, the interest appeared of understanding as the increase of the pentecostalism in the Brazilian society echoes in different sections, more specifically in the area of the social work. Like this, it was defined as general objective of the research to investigate the motivations of the shepherds of the pentecostals churches for us to develop activities close to the lacking population of the Municipal district of Londrina, in the period from 1970 to 1990.
