This paper describes an investigation into the effects of fluid bulk modulus and traction coefficient properties on piston pump flow losses and radial pison motor torque losses through experimentation, modelling and simulation. Synthetic ester, high bulk modulus, multi-grade, and single grade mineral oils were evaluated. The high bulk modulus fluid exhibited 20% lower pump case and compensator flow losses than a conventional mineral oil of the same viscosity grade. Low traction coefficient fluids reduced the lowspeed torque losses of the radial piston motor by 50%. Physical models for pump case flow and motor torque losses were derived from the experimental data. Field data was collected from a hydraulically propelled agricultural machine. This data was used to model fluid performance in the machine. The simulation results predict that at an operating temperature of 80⁰C, optimizing the bulk modulus and traction coefficients of the fluid could reduce flow losses by 18% and torque losses by 5%. These findings demonstrate the potential of combining comprehensive fluid analysis with modeling and simulation to optimize fluids for the efficient transmission of power.

As perdas de energia elétrica devidas a furtos e fraudes, também chamadas de Perdas Não-Técnicas (PNT) ou Perdas Comerciais, têm sido matéria prioritária das empresas concessionárias de distribuição de energia elétrica, bem como dos órgãos reguladores, tanto pelo seu crescimento nos últimos anos quanto pelo seu impacto no sistema elétrico brasileiro. As formas de fraude são as mais variadas possíveis, o que gera enormes dificuldades para as concessionárias. Este trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo do problema das PNT utilizando-se de uma abordagem multidisciplinar, que analisa a experiência tanto de concessionárias no Brasil como no exterior. O trabalho discute as melhores práticas para mitigação das mesmas e propõe melhorias nos processos de combate e de prevenção, e nos procedimentos legais para recuperação de receitas, apoiados sobre uma cuidadosa contextualização regulatória. Chamase a atenção para a diversidade sócio-econômica nacional, compara-se com diversos exemplos internacionais, e propõe-se identificar os aspectos mais relevantes a serem considerados na regulação sobre o tema, discutindo procedimentos e metodologias para o equacionamento do montante de recursos a serem aplicados pelas companhias distribuidoras para a adequada redução dessas perdas de energia. Observa-se que grande parte das PNT tem origem em questões de cunho social. O Estado pode e deve estabelecer políticas para resolver tais questões, possibilitando a universalização do acesso e subsidiando o fornecimento de energia elétrica. The objective of this work is to study the problem of NTL using a wide approach, analyze the experience of dealerships in Brazil and abroad, discuss the best practices for mitigation of those losses and propose improvements in the combat and prevention processes, and the legal procedures for recovery of incomes, leaning on a careful regulatory context. This study draws attention to Brazil\'s socioeconomic diversity, comparing it to various international examples, and intends to identify the most relevant aspects that must be considered on the theme, discussing procedures and methodologies for the equation of the amount of resources to be applied by distributing companies to achieve the appropriate reduction of NTL. A large part of the commercial losses has its origin in issues of social stamp. The State owes and can establish policies to solve such issues, making possible the access to electric power supply for all consumers. Apesar de sua elevada importância econômica mundial, o cultivo do tomateiro é classificado como de alto risco devido à infestação da cultura por um grande número de pragas e doenças. Esse problema leva tal cultura a depender amplamente da aplicação de agroquímicos que, além de elevaram o custo de produção, são potenciais causadores de danos ambientais e do aparecimento de outras pragas e doenças. Observando o problema mais detalhadamente, pode-se perceber que uma grande parcela das perdas advém dos danos causados por artrópodes herbívoros, os quais são capazes de se alimentar de diversas partes da planta, causando, geralmente, perda de produtividade. Apesar disso, o tomateiro apresenta mecanismos de defesa naturais contra tais pragas, como tricomas e aleloquímicos, que agem intoxicando os artrópodes, dificultando sua movimentação e/ou alterando varias fases de seu desenvolvimento. A busca por genótipos de tomateiro com maior densidade de tricomas e elevado teor de aleloquímicos é hoje considerado um hot spot de pesquisa, devido ao benefício que trariam como redução do custo de produção e maior produtividade. Sabese que vários hormônios vegetais estão ligados a geração de caracteres anti-herbivoria, mas, atualmente, um grande foco vem sendo dado somente ao ácido jasmônico, devido ao seu claro papel na formação de tricomas, aleloquímicos, inibidores de proteases, dentre outros. Visando mostrar a importância de uma abordagem multi-hormonal nesse tipo de estudo, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar quais hormônios vegetais estão envolvidos com a formação de vários caracteres anti-herbivoria em tomateiro, como densidade de tricomas e teor de aleloquímicos e inibidores de protease. Para tal, fez-se uso da um grande número de mutantes hormonais introgredidos na cultivar Micro-Tom (a qual apresenta diversas facilidades de trabalho como porte reduzido e rápido ciclo de vida). Demonstrou-se que, apesar do ácido jasmônico ser extremamente importante na formação de tais caracteres, outros hormônios também atuam fortemente em tal papel. Etileno, giberelinas e auxina alteram de forma indireta a densidade de tricomas em tomateiro, através de alteração na área de células epidérmicas. O ácido jasmônico é um forte regulador positivo da formação de tricomas, do aleloquímico zingibereno e da formação de inibidores de protease. De forma antagônica, brassinosteróides parecem controlar negativamente a densidade de tricomas, a produção de zingibereno e inibidores de protease. Interessantemente, observou-se que esse controle negativo efetuado por brassinosteróides acontece através de um controle na via do ácido jasmônico, o qual foi comprovado pela produção de duplos mutantes. Resultados obtidos em testes com o herbívoro polífago Spodoptera frugiperda e com a praga de tomate Tuta absoluta (traça-do-tomateiro), bem como de análise de expressão gênica comprovaram a importância do ácido jasmônico, brassinosteróides e sua interação na defesa a herbivoria. Os resultados aqui apresentados sugerem que o foco para futuros estudos da formação de mecanismos anti-herbivoria em tomateiro deve ser voltado não só para o ácido jasmônico como para brassinosteroides e para suas ações antagônicas. / Even though the cultivation of tomato has a high economical importance, this culture is classified as being of elevated risk because of it common infestation by pests and diseases. This problem makes this culture greatly dependent of the application of several agrochemicals, which leads to increase in cost of production, environmental damages and also facilitating the appearance of new pests and diseases. Looking carefully to the problem, it is possible to conclude that a great part of tomato losses are caused by herbivory-arthropods, which are capable of feeding of several parts of the plant, causing, generally, losses in the productivity. However, tomato has natural defense mechanisms against those pests, for example trichomes and allelochemicals, which act poisoning the arthropods, hindering their movement through the plant and/or altering steps of their development. The search for tomato genotypes with great density of trichomes and elevated levels of allelochemicals is nowadays being considered as a hot spot of research, because of the benefits it would provide (for example: a decrease in the cost of production and also a higher productivity). Although it is believed that many plant hormones are involved in the generation of anti-herbivory traits, a great focus has been given only to jasmonic acid because of it clear action in the formation of those traits, such as trichomes, allelochemicals, proteinase inhibitors and many others. The present work objective was to evaluate which hormones are involved in the formation of anti-herbivory traits such as trichome density and allelochemicals and proteinase inhibitors content. For this reason, we made use of several hormonal mutants already introgressed in the Micro-Tom cultivar (which presents benefits as small size and fast life cycle). It was showed that jasmonic acid is an important hormone in the formation of these traits, but other phytohormones also play important roles. Ethylene, gibberellins and auxin alters trichome density indirectly, by altering the area of epidermal cells and thus cell number. Jasmonic acid is a positive regulator of trichome formation, the allelochemicals zingiberene content and also in the formation of proteinase inhibitors. However, brassinosteroids acts by negatively controlling all of those. Interestingly, we observed that this negative control happens through the control of jasmonic acid pathway, a hormonal interaction that was proved by double-mutant analysis. Results obtained in tests with the polyphagous insect Spodoptera frugiperda and the tomato specific pest Tuta absoluta (tomato pinworm) and also with qPCR showed the importance of jasmonic acid, brassinosteroid and their interaction in herbivory defense. Our data suggest that future studies about the formation of antiherbivory traits should be analyzed by focusing the functions not only of jasmonic acid but also brassinosteroid and their antagonist functions.

In the recent years significant progresses in thedevelopment of high-temperature superconductors have been made.It is realistic to believe that power applications, based onthese conductors, in a few years will become available. To beable to utilise the conductors in an optimum way, theunderstanding of their behaviour under application-likecondition is essential. One important parameter that has to beoptimised is the power loss, which means that mathematicalmodels of these losses have to be developed. In a typicalapplication the superconductor is utilised in a coilconfiguration where the actual magnetic field is considerablehigher than for a straight structure. For power frequencies thelosses are dominated by hysteresis losses and flux flowlosses. In this thesis, mathematical models of the hysteresis andthe flux flow losses as a function of a transport current, anexternal magnetic field, the temperature and the frequency havebeen developed. The transport current and the magnetic field,which are assumed to be proportional to each other, includeboth an ac and a dc component. The models of the hysteresislosses are based on the critical state theory, and for twoidealised geometries, an infinite slab and a thin strip, newexact closed form equations have been derived. The equationsfor the two idealised geometries are then superimposed tofacilitate the description of a more realistic geometry, i.e. asuperconducting tape with a finite width and thickness. Themodel of the flux flow losses is valid for a tape shapedconductor and is based on both measurements and reasonablephysical assumptions. Development of a model for estimation of wind farm production losses due to icingHellström, Erik January 2013 (has links)
Wind turbines operating in cold climate are exposed to periods of icing which lowers the plantprofitability by affecting the annual production. The loss of production has two components:The first (and most important) component is reduced power during operation due to disturbedaerodynamic properties of the blades. The second component is increased standstill. During this thesis project, methods to estimate production losses of a wind farm due to icinghave been developed, as well as a software tool to facilitate the use of these methods and thepresentation of the results. A method based on common metrological data and availableproduction data was desired, as modelling ice-related losses is expensive and may be inaccurate. The methods developed are based on using measured data for each turbine, such as activepower, temperature, wind direction and wind speed, and through this data describe theindividual turbine’s performance during different conditions. Production losses were thenestimated by comparing actual and expected power output (for the given wind speed). Thethesis then expanded on this basic concept by using reanalysis and mesoscale modelled data,which offers greater variety in the way estimating the losses may be performed, as well as theoption to derive losses for periods not covered by the production data. It was also important to develop a flexible and portable method that could incorporate newseasons of data or estimate losses for different wind farms with a completely differentconfiguration of turbines. The methods are developed using data from a wind farm in northern Sweden, consisting of 40Vestas V90 turbines and constructed a few years ago. It was found that eastern position in the wind farm and turbine altitude correlates with higherice-related losses, and that easterly winds relate to higher such losses than westerly winds. Thelosses during operation were estimated to 6.4 % of annual possible production and stops due toicing to 2.1 % of the total time. The losses figures are comparable to an earlier study performedin 2011 based on the same wind farm. The possibility of anti- or deicing systems for the wind farm and the profitability of such aninvestment should be further investigated as the wind farm is expected to continue operation fortwenty years or more.

Postharvest losses and changes in quality of vegetables from retail to consumer : a case study of tomato, cabbage and carrotMunhuewyi, Karen 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScFoodSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Postharvest losses of three different vegetables (tomato - a fruit, cabbage - a leaf and carrot - a root vegetable) were investigated directly after retail purchasing and during consumer simulated storage. To conduct this study, three retail outlets (2 supermarkets and an outdoor market) were selected in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Retail prices of each vegetable were recorded from each respective Outlet. Surrounding environmental conditions (air temperature and relative humidity) at retail and during simulated consumer storage were also monitored. Vegetable postharvest losses were determined by quantifying the incidence of physical loss and changes in physico-chemical properties (colour, firmness, weight loss, ascorbic acid, total pigments, total soluble solids, titratable acid and proximate composition) over time. The percentage losses observed were then used to estimate the associated economic and environmental resource impacts of postharvest vegetable losses at the national level.
Vegetable losses immediately at retail purchase were 14.56%, 21.21% and 17.93% for tomato, cabbage and carrot, respectively. The estimated combined volume lost for all three vegetables at national level was approximately 26 460 t valued at R33.70 million. Overall economic loss was highest for tomatoes and least for carrots. The magnitude of the losses observed differed for all the outlets. Vegetable losses were mostly high for the produce from the outdoor market compared to the supermarkets during storage. Throughout the whole trial, mechanical damage accounted for at least 50 to 70% of the losses while the remainder was due to decay and insect damage. Post retail storage temperature; ambient (22–25ºC) vs. cold store (0ºC and 10–12 ºC) had a significant (P<0.05) effect on the vegetable losses. This was for both quantitative and qualitative attributes. Losses for tomato and cabbage were 18.52% and 16.67% after 3 days while carrot losses were 11.83% at 7 days after having been kept in the recommended respective cold storage temperatures. Ambient storage losses were also lowest for carrots at 22.53% after 7 days, while tomato and cabbage losses stood at 24.27% and 34.34% after 3 days of storage, respectively. Vegetable firmness generally decreased while weight loss increased with storage time. Colour development increased favourably at ambient temperature for the tomato whereas for cabbage and carrot better colour retention was observed in the cold storage. Chemical changes for all three vegetables were also most pronounced at ambient temperature with significant (P<0.05) losses observed for ascorbic acid. Changes were also noted for total pigments, soluble solids and acidity, however there was no common significant trend for all three vegetables.
Estimates of carbon dioxide emissions reveal that postharvest vegetable losses contribute to unwarranted emissions of at least 1.37 – 13.77 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2eq.) at the national level. The losses are also accompanied by wastage of approximately 3.74 – 4.35 million m3 of fresh water as well as 14.79 – 111.63 million MJ of fossil energy. The vegetable with highest production volumes and retail price was the tomato and accordingly, its postharvest losses had the severest environmental and resource impacts. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die ná-oes-verliese van drie verskillende groentes (tamatie – 'n vrug, kool – 'n blaar, en wortel – 'n wortelgroente) is direk ná kleinhandelaankope en tydens gesimuleerde verbruikersberging ondersoek.
