Lower bounds to eigenvalues by the method of arbitrary choice without truncation

After a detailed discussion of the variation theorem for upper bound calculation of eigenvalues, many standard procedures for determining lower bounds to eigenvalues are presented with chemical applications in mind. A new lower bound method, arbitrary choice without trunctation is presented and tested on the helium atom. This method is attractive because it does not require knowledge of the eigenvalues or eigenvectors of the base problem. In application, however, it is shown that the method is disappointing for two reasons: 1) the method does not guarantee improved bounds as calculational effort is increased; and 2) the method requires some a priori information which, in general, may not be available. A possible direction for future work is pointed out in the end. An extension of a lower bound method by Calogero and Marchioro has been developed and is presented in appendix G along with comments on the effective field method in appendix H for Virginia Tech access only. / Ph. Geomorphic Features and History of the Lower Part of Logan Canyon, Utah

Logan Canyon is located east of Logan, Utah, in the Bear River Range. The lower part of Logan Canyon is considered that section of the canyon from its mouth upstream to Tony Grove Canyon, a distance of 22 miles, Figure 1 Some tributary canyons of the lower part of Logan Canyon have been included in this investigation because of their relationship to Logan Canyon. Grassy Flat Canyon, a south tributary of Logan Canyon 4.4 miles from Logan, exhibits several geomorphic features related to the geology of Logan Canyon. Because of its extensive use and close association with Logan Canyon, Tony Grove Canyon is also included. Tony Grove Canyon extends from Logan Canyon northwestward to the crest of the Bear River Range, a distance of about six miles. More than 20,000 feet of Paleozoic rocks ranging in age from Cambrian to Pennsylvanian are exposed in Logan Canyon . Cenozoic deposits are widespread in and near the canyon. The crest of the Bear River Range near Naomi Peak and Tony Grove Canyon was the center of glacial activity during the Pleistocene. During the glaciations of Tony Grove Canyon, Lake Bonneville extended into Logan Canyon and influenced the geomorphic development near the mouth of the canyon. Logan Canyon is vital to the economy of Cache Valley. The canyon is a large part of the Logan River watershed. Logan River passes through three hydroelectric plants in Logan Canyon and supplies culinary and irrigation water for the valley below. Animals and plants of a wide variety are abundant, providing fishing , hunting, and a harvest of forest products. U.S. highway 89 traverses the canyon and carries a large volume of traffic to points within the canyon, as well as to other areas. Logan Canyon is entirely within the Cache National Forest. Improved campsites and recreational facilities, which were used by almost 1.5 million visitors during 1963; according to the U. S. Forest Service, are located throughout the Canyon. Increased recreational and travel use of the canyon has resulted in a demand for more geologic work in this area .

Lower Paleozoic Sequence Stratigraphy, Deposystems and Paleogeography of Northwestern Ordos Basin, North China

The Ordos basin rests upon the North China Block and is one of the largest sedimentary basins in north China, with more than 15 km of Phanerozoic strata. Published estimates suggest that over 2000 m of carbonates and lesser amounts of siliciclastics were deposited on the North China Carbonate Platform (NCCP) from the Lower Can1brian through the Middle Ordovician. However, lower Paleozoic facies successions and deposystems of northwestern Ordos basin remain poorly represented in western literature. This paper constrains depositional environments, lithologies, facies relationships and sea-level history of the northwestern part of the North China block (NCB) in an effort to further document the Early Paleozoic geologic history of western Ordos basin. New stratigraphic data come largely from measured sections in the Zhuozi Shan and Helan Shan in northwest Ordos basin. Strata in the mountains of northwestern Ordos are divided into eleven lithofacies assemblages, distinguished by lithology, stacking patterns and sedimentary structures. Lithofacies assemblages in northwest Ordos are grouped into four lithostratigraphic units that make up the composite type section. Unit A is dominantly composed of shale and mudrock lithofacies, Unit B is dominantly composed of thin-bedded lime mudstone and banded and bioturbated lime mudstone to wackestone, Unit C is dominantly composed of quartz sandstone and dolostone and Unit D is dominantly composed of fossiliferous packstone. These four units were observed in all lower Paleozoic sections of the Helan Shan and Zhuozi Shan. Deposition of Middle Cambrian through lowermost Lower Ordovician strata in northwest Ordos basin occurred on a storm-influenced, mixed siliciclastic and carbonate, shallow-water ramp. Lateral trends in quartz sandstone, paleokarsts, thrombolites and section thickness suggest that accommodation space increased to the south. The depositional architecture changed in the Middle Ordovician to a carbonate shelf environment. The sea-level history of northwestern Ordos shows transgression through the Late Can1brian, regression in the Early Ordovician, followed by a Middle Ordovician transgression, corresponding with North American sea level signatures. Lower Paleozoic sections in northwestern Ordos basin are broadly similar to those previously described in western literature. However, based upon stratigraphic data, shoreline trends of the NCCP model are proved inapplicable to northwestern Ordos. There is no evidence for lower Paleozoic tectonics such as aulacogen-controlled subsidence and platform tilting as described by previous workers. The sea-level history interpreted for northwest Ordos basin is more similar to North American curves than to the North China Carbonate Platform model, suggesting a eustatic control on lithofacies stacking patterns in northwest Ordos basin.

The fisheries of the Lower Columbia River, 1792 to 1850, based on EuroAmerican explorer and fur company accounts

The role of fish in the Native American economy of the lower Columbia River has never been considered in detail. My study focused on the Columbia River from its mouth to the Cascades and the Willamette River from its confluence with the Columbia to Willamette Falls. For this study I asked: How was salmon used? What other fish were important? Where and how were these fish taken and used? To address these questions, I evaluated historical documents, including explorer's accounts and the administrative records of fur companies dating from the late 1700's through the 1850's. I used fishery data, physical descriptions, migratory and spawning habits, and foraging patterns to identify fish in historic accounts. I annotated historic information and provided a synthesis of the historic fisheries. White sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus), eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) and chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) dominated the trade. Chum (O.keta) and lamprey (Lampetra sp.) were available, although not traded in large numbers. White sturgeon, eulachon, fall chinook, chum and lamprey were smoke cured. Steel head (0. mykiss) , coho (O.kisutch), perch (Embiotocidae), and resident trout were traded in small numbers indicating that other fish were part of the economy. Sockeye. salmon (O.nerka) was not traded. f "~{.' Indians captured white sturgeon with: multiple hooks on set-lines and funnel nets to take white sturgeon during the winter; scoop nets and the eulachon rake took eulachon; spring and summer chinook were taken with hoop nets and platforms in the Cascades rapids and at Willamette Falls; gaffs were used to take chinook and sturgeon during the summer in Baker Bay; and hoop nets took fall chinook in streams. Seine nets were noted but not were not discussed except for the chinook fishery of Baker Bay. Historic information on fishes used and methods of capture contrasts with the archaeological record of the Portland Basin. Resident freshwater fish, minnows (Cyprinidae) and suckers (Catostomus sp.), are abundant in the archaeological faunal record, but are rarely mentioned in historic accounts. Artifacts such as net weights are common in archaeological contexts in contrast with the limited discussions in the historic record. Possible explanations for these discrepancies are reviewed.

Late Holocene Climate-Flood Relationships on the Lower Ohio River

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The frequency and magnitude of flooding events on the Lower Ohio River and their relationship with climate are investigated using a ca. 2000-year-long sediment core collected from Goose Pond, Indiana. Using high-resolution radiocarbon dating (n = 25), late Holocene sedimentation rates were calculated for Goose Pond. Changes in sediment accumulation rates are attributed to variations in the frequency of flooding events on the lower Ohio River. Elevated sedimentation rates immediately following the formation of Goose Pond ca. 2000 years ago persisted until 680 CE, suggesting regular flooding during this interval. Between 680 and 1190 CE, sedimentation rates decreased dramatically and abruptly, indicating a reduction in flood frequencies. Sedimentation rates subsequently increased again at ca. 1190 CE and persisted at a similar level until 1850 CE, suggesting that flooding frequencies increased during a time that overlapped with the Little Ice Age (LIA; 1250-1850 CE). Sedimentation rates increased again at ca. 1850 CE, reaching a 2000-year high (3.33 cm/yr) at 1970 CE and indicating a period characterized by frequent flooding and landscape erosion. The flood record from Goose Pond shows similarities with other Lower Ohio River flood reconstructions from Avery Lake, IL, and Hovey Lake, IN, suggesting the Goose Pond record reflects the regional flooding history for the lower Ohio River. Comparison with paleoclimate records from the Midwest supports the idea that lower Ohio River flood frequencies prior to Euro American occupation in the 1800s increased during times when winter precipitation predominated as a result of atmospheric circulation changes resembling the Pacific North vii American mode (PNA) that appear to have been driven in part by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Following Euro-American land clearance, lower Ohio River flooding increased dramatically despite a decrease in winter precipitation. This likely reflects an increase in runoff and erosion as a result of deforestation and landscape conversion to intensive row crop agriculture. As climate continues to change and the Midwestern United States continues to see an increase in precipitation, both winter and summer, flood frequencies could be expected to increase still further.

It was found that in clear sky conditions at Goose Bay, Toronto and Winnipeg, for the period 1977 -1982, the presence of aerosol made the systems 10 -20% more efficient at absorbing radiation than if the aerosol was absent.
