Flexural strength and shear bond strength of self-etching/self-adhesive resin luting agents

Adcook, Richard S. January 2009 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Traditional resin luting agents generally have mechanical properties that are superior to the newer so-called “universal” self-etching/self-adhesive resin luting agents. However, recent reports indicate that some properties of these new luting agents have been improved, approaching those of the traditional etch and rinse resin luting agents. The objective of this study was to test some mechanical properties of four of these self-etching/self-adhesive resin luting agents [Maxcem Elite (ME), Multilink Automix (MA), RelyX Unicem (RU), SmartCem 2 (SC)] and compare them to a traditional etch and rinse resin luting agent [RelyX ARC (RA)] and a resin-modified glass ionomer luting cement [Fuji Plus (FP)], both of which have much longer histories of clinical success. By comparing the properties of the newer cements to the standards, it may be possible to determine how clinically successful the newer cements may be. The mechanical properties tested were flexural strength (FS) and shear bond strength (SBS). The FS test included making beams of each material, storing them in water for periods of time (24 hours and 90 days) and then performing a three-point bending test on a universal testing machine. The 90 day groups were thermocycled. The SBS test involved preparing human molar specimens, making flat dentin surfaces. Composite cylinders were fabricated, luted to the dentin surfaces with each of the materials tested, stored in water for periods of time (24 hours or 90 days), and then a knife edge shear test was performed on a universal testing machine. The 90 day groups were thermocycled. A Weibull-distribution survival analysis was performed. The results revealed significant differences in the FS of all materials tested at 24 hours. After 90 days and thermocycling, only SC and RA were not significantly different. At both time periods, FP had the lowest and MA the highest FS. The SBS results showed MA, RA, and RU to have the highest bond strengths; SC and ME the lowest at 24 hours. After 90 days and thermocycling, RA had significantly higher bond strength than all other groups; ME, FP and SC had the lowest. The self-etching/self-adhesive resin luting agents all performed at least as well as FP, with the exception of SC (SBS 24 hour). They did not all perform as well as RA, with the exception of SC (FS 90 day), MA (SBS 24 hour, FS 24 hour and 90 day), and RU (SBS 24 hour). The newer luting agents should expect to have clinical success, regarding flexural strength and shear bond strength, at least as good as resin-modified glass ionomer luting cements and approach the level of traditional etch and rinse resin luting agents.

Cementing zirconia: effect of cement types, polymerization mode, cement space, and air particle abrasion

Maawadh, Ahmed 30 July 2018 (has links)
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate various cements in vitro for adhesion to zirconia, light curing vs. self-curing, the effect of particle abrasion (APA) on the zirconia intaglio for maximizing retention, the effect of thermocycling, and the effect of cement space. METHODS: The tested cements included: Ceramir C&B (Doxa) Panavia F2.0 (Kuraray); Multilink Automix (Ivoclar); Theracem (Bisco); Duolink (Bisco); Bifix (Shofu); CemEZ (Zest Dental). For testing cements retention, custom made zirconia rings 12.5 mm outer diameter, 5.5 mm height and 6.147 mm inner diameter were used to emulate crowns. Round steel rods (McMaster) were manufactured to fit into the zirconia rings allowing a cement space of 50 Microns or 100 Microns. A cementing jig was used to keep the rods at the center of the zirconia rings. Cements were tested using light curing and self-curing (n=10 per each test). Groups of zirconia rings were air braded with 100 Microns aluminum oxide particles for 10 Sec. Half the specimens were stored in water for 24 hours at 37o C in dark environment or thermocycled for 5000 cycles. A ‘push-out’ test using an Instron universal machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Loads to failure were recorded to calculate cements retention. RESULTS: Statistical analysis was performed using JMP Pro 13 software. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA, multiple t-test, and Tukey-Kramer HSD. For self curing method without APA, retention strength ranking for tested cements were: Ceramir C&B ≥ Theracem > Panavia F2.0 ≥ Duolink ≥ Multilink Automix ≥ Bifix. For light curing method without APA, retention strength ranking for tested cements were: CemEZ ≥ Theracem ≥ Multilink Automix ≥ Duolink ≥ Bifix ≥ Panavia F2.0. There was a significant influence in retention strength for light cured cements compared to self-curing method except for Theracem and Panavia F2.0. For the self-curing method with APA, retention strength ranking for tested cements were: Theracem > Duolink ≥ Panavia F2.0 ≥ Multilink Automix ≥ Bifix > Ceramir C&B. For the light curing method with APA, retention strength ranking for tested cements were: Theracem ≥ Multilink Automix ≥ CemEZ ≥ Duolink ≥ Panavia F.0 ≥ Bifix. A significant increase in retention strength with APA compared to self-curing method with APA. There was no significant effect of thermocycling treatment on retention strength of the cements tested. There was no significant effect of different cement spaces on retention strength except for Ceramir C&B without APA and Multilink Automix with and without APA (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: 1- There was a significant difference in retention strength to zirconia among tested cements in self and light curing methods. 2- Light curing resin cements influenced retention strength to zirconia for the tested cements. 3- APA influenced the retention strength to zirconia for tested cements except for Ceramir C&B. 4- Increasing the cement space from 50μm to 100μm had no significant difference in retention strength to zirconia except for Ceramir C&B without APA and Multilink Automix with and without APA. 5- Thermocycling had no significant effect of on retention strength to zirconia for the tested cements. / 2020-07-30T00:00:00Z

Evaluation of water sorption and solubility behavior of nine different polymeric luting materials

Alsheikh, Rasha N. January 2009 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The cementation procedure is the key to long-term success of fixed restorations. The prognosis of prosthetic restoration is largely impacted by the maintenance of the luting cement and the adhesive bond. When exposed to water or saliva, most restorative materials undergo hydrolytic degradation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the water solubility and water sorption characteristics of newly introduced acidic polymeric luting agents over a 180-day water-storage period. Nine different luting agents were tested. Fifty-two disc specimens of each material were fabricated using a mold with an internal dimension of 15[plus-minus]0.1 mm in diameter and 1.0 [plus-minus]0.1 mm deep. A constant weight, W0 [subscript zero], was reached after desiccating the specimens. Then, 13 specimens were assigned randomly to one of the four testing periods in the water for seven, 30, 90 and 180 days. After each period, the specimens were removed from the water and weighed to get W1 [subscript one]. A second period of desiccating the samples provided a constant weight W2 [subscript two]. The water sorption and solubility were determined by the following equations: WSP [subscript SP](%) = (W1 [subscript one] W2 [subscript two] ) X 100/ W0 [subscript zero] ,WSL [subscript SL](%) = (W0 [subscript zero] W2 [subscript two) X 100/ W0 [subscript zero]. The resin-modified glass-ionomers showed the highest water sorption/solubility results. The resin luting agents had the lowest sorption/solubility results. The self-adhesives showed a wide range of solubility/sorption; in general, they showed lower results compared with the resin-modified glass-ionomers. All the materials reached some sort of equilibrium after 90-days. Based on the results of our study, we conclude that self-adhesive luting materials were not all alike. Rely X Unicem was the most comparable to the resin luting materials. The resin luting materials had the lowest solubility and sorption. Resin-modified glass-ionomers showed the highest sorption/solubility results.

Amaral, Thais Helena Andreolli do 28 August 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of different luting agents (Ketac Cem Easy Mix 3M ESPE and RelyX Unicem 3M ESPE), microscopically, by means of implants in the subcutaneous connective tissue of isogenic mice; microscopically and radiographically, after application to deep cavities, close to the pulp, in dogs teeth. In the study in subcutaneous connective tissue, 40 isogenic BALB/c mice were allocated in 9 groups with 3 experimental periods: Group I: Ketac Cem Easy Mix® (7 days), Group II: RelyX Unicem (7 days), Group III: empty polyethylene tube (7 days), Group IV: Ketac Cem Easy Mix (21 days) Group V: RelyX? Unicem (21 days), Group VI: empty polyethylene tube (21 days), Group VII: Ketac Cem Easy Mix (63 days), Group VIII: RelyX Unicem (63 days), Group IX: empty polyethylene tube (63 days). In the study in the pulp tissue of dogs teeth, 40 teeth (80 roots) of 4 dogs were used and assigned to 6 groups: Group I: Ketac Cem Easy Mix (7 days), Group II: RelyX Unicem (7 days), Group III: zinc oxide and eugenol cement (7 days), Group IV: Ketac Cem Easy Mix (70 days) Group V: RelyX Unicem (70 days), Group VI: zinc oxide and eugenol cement (70 days). The microscopic analysis of the subcutaneous connective tissue was performed under standard ligth microscopy, according to the following parameters: presence of inflammatory infiltrate (cellularity and cell type) and tissue repair. In the microscopic analysis in dogs teeth, a comprehensive description of dentin, pulp and periapical tissue characteristics was undertaken, based on the following aspects: presence of normal pulp; presence of reparative dentin; presence of ulceration; presence of pulpitis; and presence of pulp necrosis. The radiographic evaluation was performed by means of the analysis of periapical radiographs taken before the operative procedures and at the experimental periods, with respect to the integrity of the lamina dura, presence or absence of root resorptions and areas of periapical bone rarefaction. The results of the microscopic analysis demonstrated that, when applied to dentin, both cements did not cause adverse pulp reactions. Nevertheless, when applied directly to the pulp tissue, the luting agents triggered an intense inflammatory response, with pulp necrosis and development of periapical reaction. In the subcutaneous connective tissue of mice, Ketac Cem Easymix induced an inflammatory response and intense reactive phenomena at all analyzed periods. On the other hand, RelyX Unicem induced a discrete inflammatory response with tissue repair at the later periods. It may be concluded that RelyX Unicem and Ketac Cem Easymix luting agents presented satisfactory results when applied to the dentin of deep cavities without pulp exposure. However, when placed in contact with the subcutaneous connective tissue and pulp tissue in areas of micro-exposures, these materials presented unsatisfactory results.

Análise do desajuste vertical e do afrouxamento de parafusos de próteses sobre implante confeccionadas pelas técnicas do cilindro cimentado ou soldado a laser / Analysis of vertical misfit and screw loosening of implant-supported prosthesis obtained by cemented cylinder or laser welding technique

Oliveira, Danilo Flamini 16 December 2013 (has links)
This study evaluated implant supported prostheses obtained by two techniques (cemented cylinder or laser welded cylinder) and their behavior regarding passivity and screw loosening. Three-element FPPs were made over 2 implants: G1, cemented cylinder technique, G2, laser welded cylinder technique (n=10). The levels of vertical misfit and passivity were evaluated before and after ceramic pressing, and after mechanical cycling; while loss of initial torque of prosthetic retaining screws, before and after mechanical cycling. The mechanical cycling simulated one year of normal masticatory function (50N, 300,000 cycles). Vertical misfit and passivity were analyzed by Sheffield\'s test. The percentage of torque loss was calculated. The misfit and torque loss data were statistically compared by Mixed Linear Model . Overall, G1 showed vertical misfit statistically lower than G2 (p<0.05) in the three conditions analyzed by Sheffield\'s test, before and after mechanical cycling, reaching maximum values of misfit corresponding to: 11.94 ± 3.17μm (G1) and 48.63 ± 39.68 μm (G2) before cycling; 12.42 ± 6.19μm (G1) and 47.62 ± 35.16μm (G2), after cycling, when screws were tightened. Additionally, in all experimental conditions, the mechanical cycling did not influence the misfit in both groups (p<0.05), except for the molar G1 when analyzed in the tightened condition (p<0.0001). When was analyzed G2, statistically significant increase in the vertical misfit was found after ceramic pressing for all elements (p<0.0001) for different moments, except when the molar was not tightened, which showed similar misfit before and after pressing (p=0.052). In the analysis of torque loss, values expressed as percentage of loss are presented: Pre-molar - G1- before cycling: 31.04 ± 13.22%, G2- before cycling: 33.97 ± 13.41% (G1 x G2 before cycling: p=0.662), G1- after cycling: 42.36 ± 14.99%, G2- after cycling: 37.92 ± 9.32% (G1 x G2 after cycling: p=0.461). When the pre-molar was analyzed, statistical differences before and after cycling were not found for both groups (G1: p=0.067; G2: p=0.423); Molar - G1- before cycling: 30.77 ± 12.37%; G2- before cycling: 44.37 ± 11.14% (G1 x G2 before cycling: p=0.032); G1- after cycling: 39.28 ± 13.96%; G2- after cycling: 54.40 ± 26 , 39% (G1 x G2 after cycling: p=0.189). When the molar was analyzed, statistical differences were not found before and after cycling for both groups (G1: p=0.392; G2: p=0.233). Based on these results, it is possible to conclude that: G1 showed vertical misfit and passivity smaller than G2, but for both groups, the misfits are within acceptable standards for the literature; mechanical cycling did not change the vertical misfit and torque loss (%) for both groups; both techniques were not able to promote absolute passivity, in view of the higher values of misfit when compared to the side no tightened.
