Adsorption of vapours on active carbons

Siddiqi, Khalid Sifat January 1980 (has links)
Experimental studies are reported, on the single and binary component adsorption of various gases and organic vapours on activated carbons (Anthrasorb CC818H and CC818M) at different temperatures. Experiments were performed for methane, ethane, methane-ethane mixtures, acetone and carbon tetra-chloride vapours. Single component isotherms were established for all the adsorbates over a range of temperatures (-6 to 50°C). The empirical Langmuir and Freundlich models correlate the results well. The Polanyi adsorption potential theory depicts all of the single component data. Other empirical and theoretical isotherm equations were also tested. Binary isotherms were obtained for methane-ethane mixtures on both Anthrasorb CC818H and CC818M. An empirical method was employed to model the binary adsorption data using single component empirical Langmuir parameters to express the binary isotherm of each component in a given mixture. The Polanyi adsorption potential theory correlates the binary adsorption data fairly well. Breakthrough data for single and binary adsorbates (over a range of concentrations and flowrates) were obtained and mathematical models established which represents the results. A finite difference technique was used to model the fixed bed breakthrough data. Two simplified asymptotic models (linear driving force and pore diffusion control) were also used to correlate the single component data. For the binary adsorption of methane-ethane mixtures, a linear driving force model was successfully employed to correlate the experimental breakthrough curves. Isothermal fixed bed experiments to desorb acetone from Anthrasorb CC818H over the range of temperatures (150-250°C) showed that Anthrasorb can be used to completely remove such an organic vapour and be regenerated for further use.

Applications of conformal methods to relativistic trace-free matter models

Hursit, Adem E. January 2018 (has links)
Conformal methods have proven to be very useful in the analysis global properties and stability of vacuum spacetimes in general relativity. These methods transform the physical spacetime into a different Lorentzian manifold known as the unphysical spacetime where the ideal points at infinity are located at a finite position. This thesis makes use of conformal methods and applies them to various problems involving trace-free matter models. In particular, it makes progress towards the understanding of the evolution of unphysical spacetimes perturbed by trace-free matter as well as the behaviour of the the matter itself. To this end, evolution equations (wave equations) are derived and analyzed for both the unphysical spacetime and the matter. To investigate the relation between solutions of these wave equations to the Einstein field equations, a suitable system of subsidiary evolution equations is also derived. Furthermore, this thesis looks in detail at the behaviour of an unphysical spacetime coupled to the simplest matter trace free model: the confomally invariant scalar field. Finally, the system of conformal wave equations is used to show that the deSitter spacetime is non-linearly stable under perturbations by trace-free matter.

A staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Burgers' equation.

January 2012 (has links)
The 1D inviscid Burgers' equation is the simplest nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law. In this thesis, a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Burgers' equation is proposed. Staggered discontinuous Galerkin method is a kind of DG method that compromise conforming finite element method and standard DG method. Two unknown functions that are discontinuous at different points are solved, thus extra continuity is imposed at the points of discontinuity of the discontinuous function by the staggered counter part. For the Burgers' equation, the unknown function and the flux form the staggered pair. We will derive this staggered DG scheme and show that the scheme is energy conserving. / Typical problems concerning the Burgers' equation involve shock waves and discontinuous solutions. In such cases, the scheme is no longer energy conserving and the problem of numerical oscillations arises. Two approaches are presented to eliminate the numerical oscillations in the solution. The rst one is based on adding an artificial diffusive flux to the scheme. The artificial diffusive flux is derived from a staggered DG scheme for the viscid Burgers' equation for which the derivation is similar. To preserve accuracy, the artificial diffusive flux is added only at regions with oscillations. The second approach is a TV regularization method. The total variation of the oscillatory numerical solution is minimized under certain constraints that preserve the accuracy of the solution. To reduce computation cost and redundant error, the TV minimization process is induced locally in regions with oscillations. Bregman algorithm is applied for numerical implementation of the minimization problem. Successful pedagogical practices of elementary teachers of homeless students: A case study

Pickles, Kimberly Owen 01 January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this research study is to examine the instructional practices of teachers who are currently teaching homeless students in their classroom. This study identified eight teachers in two suburban elementary schools that have students in their current classrooms that are experiencing homelessness. In addition, the research study explored the needs considered and strategies that teachers use to differentiate and accommodate their instructional practices to maximize achievement for these students. Qualitative data was collected by a study of teacher interviews through collective ethnographic case studies. Additionally, quantitative data was collected through evaluator observations of the selected classrooms to observe the differences between the identified students and the students not experiencing homelessness. Additional artifacts were submitted from teachers to support data collection. This study revealed key themes of successful pedagogical practices of elementary teachers with instructional strategies and non-instructional strategies. These themes included instructional strategies of planning, learning groups, and homework modifications. Non-instructional strategies included themes of relationships, supports, and needs.

HERBERT BLUMER'S THEORY OF METHOD: ITS DEVELOPMENT AND STRUCTURE

Unknown Date (has links)
This study provides a comprehensive and critical account of Herbert Blumer's methodology. Beginning with a reflexive look at its own program for reading, the study proposes to regard Blumer in light of the systematic character of his arguments, including especially their tenability. The ensuing account, then, attempts to depict the patterns of intelligibility which underlie Blumer's positions, to criticize the positions where needed, and to suggest corrective revisions where appropriate. / The characterization of Blumer's methodology begins with its general framework: Blumer regards methodology as a self-reflective exercise in which the principles underlying scientific inquiry are developed and criticized. This view clashes with all versions of "methodology" which delimit its scope to technical considerations; indeed, Blumer castigates such a truncated focus. / As regards the substantive results of his methodological thinking, Blumer's work presents a decidedly variegated visage. This is admittedly less so in ontological concerns--where Blumer adherred rather consistently to universalist realism--than in epistemological matters, where the diversity of Blumer's thinking requires the introduction of a developmental schema. Accordingly, the study proposes a three-stage sequence: Beginning in his first paper with a pragmatist-inspired position, Blumer shifted to a positivist stance centered upon the attempt to provide experiential definitions of concepts. Eventually Blumer simply deployed his positivist empiricism without making any effort to account for it theoretically--he replaced methodology with method. / But there is another facet of Blumer's work which, inconsistent with the reductive empiricism, is more suggestive for current methodological thinking. That facet concerns the semantic unity of theory and method. In such areas as public opinion research and "variable analysis," Blumer provides some insightful criticism of current practices. In expounding and defending this aspect of Blumer's work, the study advances suggestions for revamping his empiricism to bring it into line with what in his thinking is worth preserving. Toward that end the discussions turns upon such issues as the theory-ladenness of observation, theory-testing, the sociality of knowledge, and the valuational facet of scientific inquiry. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 46-09, Section: A, page: 2835. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1985.
