Investigation into possible causes of elevated ozone concentrations in Miami, Florida

Aspy, Dale E. 16 January 1986 (has links)
Ozone readings which exceeded the National Ambient Air Quality Standard of 120 ppbv were recorded in Miami, Florida during 1978 and 1980. Similar elevated concentrations of ozone extended across upper Florida and into the Southeastern portion of the United States. It is concluded that tropospheric transport of ozone into the Miami area occurs. This conclusion is supported by lead analyses of atmospheric samples taken in Miami and by isentropic trajectories. Six case studies are presented. In all cases transport of ozone into Florida appears to occur. In only four of the cases does this result in elevated ozone levels in Miami. In one case lower Florida was experiencing an oceanic influx of air and low ozone concentrations. In the other case Miami was experiencing a stagnation and high ozone concentrations apparently generated locally. The long range transport of ozone across the Southeastern United States appears to result from circulation within a weather pattern characterized by a stagnant high pressure system over the Southeastern United States.

La migration et les émotions : Les sentiments d’appartenance du genre et à la nation des migrants argentins à Miami et à Barcelone / Migration and emotions : The feelings of the kind belonging to the nation and Argentinean migrants in Miami and Barcelona

Vermot, Cécile 22 February 2013 (has links)
Between 1999 and 2003, Argentina experienced an economic, political and social crisis, which reached its peak during the Corralito in 2001. During this period, the unemployment rate rose to 25% and 57.5% of the population fell below the poverty line. Fragmentation of Argentina as "imagined community" has led indignation, disappointment, frustration and uncertainty feelings about which some Argentines chose to respond through collective actions while others have chosen to emigrate, mainly to the United States and Spain. This research analyzes the feelings of the kind belonging to the nation and Argentine immigrants in Miami and Barcelona (1999-2003). Migration is seen as an "emotional experience", which entails negotiations, changes in identification of individuals who may be experienced and expressed emotionally. Taking into account the expression of emotions depending on the type of individuals to analyze the migration phenomenon is not only a new perspective, it provides a better understanding of migration. Selection of respondents was dependent on their family social position, that is to say, if they emigrated alone or in pairs. Comparison of the two fields, Miami and Barcelona, two years apart three moments in time, allowed me to move towards an objectification of emotions and have a comprehensive understanding of their operation during the migration process. This research shows that the expression of emotions by respondents (hope, guilt, sadness, fear, anger, shame, love, nostalgia), the representations and actions related to them, depend on the construction of the subjectivity of the genre, temporality and place of migration.

Teacher Education Students at Miami Dade College: Perceptions of High Impact Practices

Unknown Date (has links)
Miami Dade College (MDC) is predominantly an associate degree granting institution also authorized to confer baccalaureates. As “democracy’s college”, MDC is the nation’s largest, most diverse community college. In 2011, a comprehensive redesign effort was launched to increase degree completion. This sequential mixed model design study queried teacher education student voices to explore their perceived impact of three high-impact practices (i.e., mandatory orientations, assigned advisors, and Individualized Educational Plans). A survey (n=218) was administered during an initial quantitative phase, confirming that a) students perceived the interventions as the institution intended and b) ethnicity influenced perception. Focus groups (n=27) were conducted during a subsequent qualitative phase, unveiling three overarching findings about how and why perceptions of operational, affective, and academic aspects of the interventions were useful, not useful, or could be enhanced to help them navigate/ “survive” college, make adequate progress, and anticipate graduating, transferring, or entering a career. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Bodies in Parallax: Reframing the Cultural Experience of Miami Beach

Azadeh, Amir January 2013 (has links)
Parallax is integral to the conception of movement in modern architectural space. This research examines the role of architectural parallax in creating dynamic spaces that champion the primacy of perception to reinforce a conceptual narrative. The study is contextualized in the cinematic context of Miami Beach to understand the dynamic quality of its public spaces. An analysis of these spaces studies the role of parallax in reinforcing the city???s scopophiliac meta-narrative of Seeing and being Seen. A final design project is situated within the shifting sociocultural context of Miami Beach today as it strives to reinvent itself into a cultural destination for the high Arts. The chosen site is a historically significant site that has remained as a municipal parking lot for over 70 years, and may not be developed for commercial purposes. The design proposes Collins Cultural Center that draws from the exhibitionist Beach culture of the city and fuses it with the high Arts culture. The aim is to use parallax as an architectural strategy to create a dynamic space for cultural production and exchange. Reframing the cultural imagination of residents and visitors fuels Miami Beach???s momentum towards becoming a future cultural destination for the Arts.
