A tese visa compreender a Utopia como uma obra política moderna de caráter literário e filosófico. A abordagem do aspecto literário é feita no primeiro capítulo e retomada no final, e busca em, primeiro lugar, estabelecer as diferenças fundamentais entre a Utopia e alguns dos constructos ideais que a precederam e com os quais ela é recorrentemente identificada, tais como a Era de Ouro, o paraíso e a Atlântida; em segundo lugar, ela procura também verificar a proximidade e a distancia da Utopia em relação à sátira, gênero literário com o qual a obra passou a ser identificado mais recentemente por uma parcela dos comentadores, mudando-se o seu registro do apologético para o crítico. O aspecto filosófico é tratado no segundo e no terceiro capítulos. No segundo se procura mapear as relações da Utopia com a filosofia política clássica, sobretudo no que respeita aos constructos filosóficos ideais, enquanto que o capítulo três discute a vinculação da Utopia com o humanismo erasmiano, do qual ela é, ao mesmo tempo, devedora e crítica. O quarto capítulo apresenta as considerações finais, procurando caracterizar a obra como um produto do renascimento inglês, produto este que combina literatura e filosofia de uma maneira singular, ambas se mesclando para compor o sentido político da obra, ambas com igual direito de cidadania em Utopia. / The thesis aims to understand Utopia as a modern political work of literary and philosophical character. The approach to the literary aspect is made in the first chapter and resumed at the end, and seeks first to establish the fundamental differences between Utopia and some of the ideal constructs that preceded it and with which it is recurrently identified, such as Age Of Gold, paradise and Atlantis; secondly, it also seeks to verify the proximity and distance of Utopia in relation to satire, a literary genre with which the work has been identified more recently by a portion of the commentators. The philosophical aspect is dealt with in the second and third chapters. In the second, we try to map the relations of Utopia with classical political philosophy, especially with regard to ideal philosophical constructs, while chapter three discusses the connection of Utopia with Erasmian humanism, of which it is at once debtor and critical. The fourth chapter presents the final considerations, seeking to characterize the Utopia as a product of the English Renaissance, a product that combines literature and philosophy in a unique way, both merging to compose the political sense of the work, both with equal citizenship rights in Utopia.

Sir Thomas More and the art of dialogueLakowski, Romauld I. 11 1900 (has links)
In this study I present an analysis of the structures of four works by Sir Thomas More: The History of Richard III, the 'Dialogue of Counsel' in Book I of Utopia, The Dialogue Concerning Heresies, and The Dialogue of Comfort in Tribulation. My basic thesis is that Thomas More was a superb literary artist and a master of the art of literary dialogue, and that beneath the often apparently rambling and digressive surface of each of these literary works, there is a 'deep structure' that is highly coherent and even tightly organised. I also show that More's use of dialogue in each of the three dialogues is genuinely dialectical—that the individual speakers in the three literary dialogues make a genuine contribution to thedevelopment of the argument—and that the movement from speaker to speaker in the History of Richard III is also genuinely dialectical— anticipating the art of the three later dialogues. To this end I have provided an interpretive reading/analysis of each of the works, focussing on More's "art of dialogue" in the passages of direct and indirect speech in Richard III, and in the dialogues between Hythloday and Persona More in Book I of Utopia, between Chancellor More and the Messenger in the Dialogue Concerning Heresies, and between Vincent and Anthony in the Dialogue of Comfort. The thesis also includes a major bibliographical appendix, consisting of about two thousand items of More scholarship organised according to topic. (The Bibliography is quite comprehensive covering all of More's works and also background studies and biographies.) The appendix is provided both as part of my argument and as a tool for further research.

Subsystem architecture sizing and analysis for aircraft conceptual designChakraborty, Imon 07 January 2016 (has links)
In traditional aircraft conceptual design, subsystems are largely accounted for implicitly based on available historical data and trends. Such an approach has limitations when novel subsystem architectures such as More Electric or All Electric aircraft are considered, since historical data regarding such architectures is either limited or non-existent. In such cases, the incorporation of more thorough and explicit consideration of the aircraft subsystems into the conceptual design phase is warranted.
The first objective of this dissertation is to integrate subsystem sizing and analysis methods that are suitable for the early design phases with the traditional aircraft sizing methodology. The goal is to facilitate the assessment subsystem architecture performance with respect to vehicle and mission level metrics. The second objective is to investigate how the performance of different subsystem architectures varies with aircraft size. The third and final objective is to assess the sensitivity of architecture performance to epistemic and technological uncertainty.
These objectives are pursued through the development of an integrated sizing and analysis environment where the subsystems are sized in parallel with the aircraft itself using subsystem models that are computationally inexpensive and do not require detailed aircraft definition. The effects of subsystem mass, secondary power requirements, and drag increments are propagated to the mission performance analysis following which the vehicle and subsystems are re-sized. A number of experiments are performed to first test the capabilities of the developed environment and subsequently assess the performance of numerous subsystem architectures and the sensitivity of select architectures to epistemic and technological uncertainty.

This dissertation, entitled Utopia Refracted through Mandarin Lenses, examines the legacy of Thomas More's Utopia (1516) in three aspects: translations, paratexts, and afterlives. It explores how Utopia - as a book and as a construct - has been appropriated into the Mandarin context during the process of linguistic and cultural transfer in the acts of translation. Employing close reading, instrumental case study, and the concept of paratexts to survey fourteen standalone Mandarin translations of Utopia, this study aims to fill in the gap of a previously neglected aspect of utopian studies, especially its paratextual apparatus, which has been almost entirely overlooked (with only one exception in 2003) since its first translation in 1935. This dissertation is structured into four chapters: the first chapter contextualises Utopia in the original Renaissance context by providing its early publication history (Latin and English) and by analysing the modes of narrative - fiction and dialogue - in which More's self-fashioning is manifest and where his hypothetical heterocosm is materialised. All this substantiates how fiction, dialogue, and paratexts are integral to the shaping of Utopia, without which a holistic reading is not feasible.
