MPEG-2 in a Stream Programming Language

Drake, Matthew, Hoffmann, Hank, Rabbah, Rodric, Amarasinghe, Saman P. 01 1900 (has links)
Image and video codecs are prevalent in multimedia applications, ranging from embedded systems, to desktop computers, to high-end servers such as HDTV editing consoles. It is not uncommon however for developers create (from scratch) and customize their codec implementations for each of the architecture targets they intend their coders and decoders to run on. This practice is time consuming and error prone, leading to code that is not malleable or portable. In this paper we describe an implementation of the MPEG-2 codec using the StreamIt programming language. StreamIt is an architecture independent stream language that aims to improve programmer productivity, while concomitantly exposing the inherent parallelism and communication topology of the application. We describe why MPEG is a good match for the streaming programming model, and illustrate the malleability of the implementation using a simple modification to the decoder to support alternate color compression formats. StreamIt allows for modular application development, which also reduces the complexity of the debugging process since stream components can be verified independently. This in turn leads to greater programmer productivity. We implement a fully functional MPEG-2 decoder in StreamIt. The decoder was developed in eight weeks by a single student programmer who did not have any prior experience with MPEG or other video codecs. Many of the MPEG-2 components were subsequently reused to assemble a JPEG codec. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

A Neuro-Fuzzy Approach to Detection of Human Face and Body for MPEG Video Compression

Du, Shih-Huai 24 July 2001 (has links)
For some new multimedia applications using Mpeg-4 or Mpeg-7 video coding standards, it is important to find the main objects in a video frame. In this thesis, we propose a neuro-fuzzy modeling approach to the detection of human face and body. Firstly, a fuzzy clustering technique is performed to segment a video frame into clusters to generating several fuzzy rules. Secondly, chrominance and motion features are used to roughly classify the clusters into foreground and background, respectively. Finally, the fuzzy rules are refined by a fuzzy neural network, and the ambiguous regions between foreground and background are further distinguished by the fuzzy neural network. Our method improves the correctness of human face and body detection by getting training data more precisely. Besides, we can extract the VOs correctly even the VOs have no obvious motion in the video sequence.

Adapting video compression to new formats / Adaptation de la compression vidéo aux nouveaux formats

Bordes, Philippe 18 January 2016 (has links)
The new video codecs should be designed with an high level of adaptability in terms of network bandwidth, format scalability (size, color space…) and backward compatibility. This thesis was made in this context and within the scope of the HEVC standard development. In a first part, several Video Coding adaptations that exploit the signal properties and which take place at the bit-stream creation are explored. The study of improved frame partitioning for inter prediction allows better fitting the actual motion frontiers and shows significant gains. This principle is further extended to long-term motion modeling with trajectories. We also show how the cross-component correlation statistics and the luminance change between pictures can be exploited to increase the coding efficiency. In a second part, post-creation stream adaptations relying on intrinsic stream flexibility are investigated. In particular, a new color gamut scalability scheme addressing color space adaptation is proposed. From this work, we derive color remapping metadata and an associated model to provide low complexity and general purpose color remapping feature. We also explore the adaptive resolution coding and how to extend scalable codec to stream-switching applications. Several of the described techniques have been proposed to MPEG. Some of them have been adopted in the HEVC standard and in the UHD Blu-ray Disc. Various techniques for adapting the video compression to the content characteristics and to the distribution use cases have been considered. They can be selected or combined together depending on the applications requirements.

Plate-forme ouverte pour contenus et traitements multimédias en ligne / Open platform for multimedia contents and processing on line

Le Bonhomme, Benoît 14 December 2009 (has links)
The emergency of the Internet as a medium for multimedia content, the manner to access the content including means of enriching it with semantic information constitute large research domains. This thesis situates in this context and introduces an operational implementation of an open and interoperable multimedia content distribution platform. After specifying the platform architecture introducing the support of all media types, effective indexation, content search and on-line visualisation, the first contribution of the thesis consists in several MPEG 7 extensions allowing 3D object description, as well as multimedia service specification. These extensions makes it possible a novel approach of asset management systems fully normalised with MPEG 7 and MPEG 4, the concept being demonstrated by the implementation of the www.MyMultimédiaWorld.com platform. The second contribution of the thesis concerns the fundaments and tools to ensure easy access to the multimedia platform. We developed an original solution based on an access API making possible to third party applications to access content and metadata resident into the platform. A second API, makes it possible to integrate multimedia processing algorithm directly in the platform, transforming it into a continuous evolving environment. The Web2.0 paradigm of user generated content is now extended to user generated functionality. Based on the two APIs, we proposed a novel approach for evaluation of multimedia related algorithms. The key aspects are the online processing, evolving content, execution of algorithms in identical conditions, always up-to-date results. The approach is demonstrated for two benchmarks: the first deals with 3D mesh compression algorithms and the second with 3D shape descriptors developed in the FAME2 and POPS projects of the System@tic competitiveness cluster. The advantages of such benchmarking approach were recognized recently by MPEG committee when deciding to adopt www.MyMultimédiaWorld.com as the standard evaluation tool for 3D mesh compression.

A Comparison of Various Video Compression Methods for Use in Instrumentation Systems

Rieger, James L., Gattis, Sherri L. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1993 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Various forms of 'lossy' and 'lossless' encoding have been implemented or proposed to allow compression of still and motion picture images, with varying degrees of success which in turn depend on how success is defined. Proponents of various systems claim 'compression ratios' which by their nature defy comparison of one system with another and suggest there actually may be something like a free lunch. This paper compares various compression methods as well as the implications involved in using them and what happens when different systems encounter the problems associated with the uses of the restored picture.
