Crustal Storage and Ascent Rates of the Mt. Shasta Primitive Magnesian Andesite

abstract: Primitive arc magmas provide a critical glimpse into the geochemical evolution of subduction zone magmas, as they represent the most unadulterated mantle-derived magmas observed in nature in these tectonic environments and are the precursors of the more abundant andesites and dacites typical in arcs. To date, the study of primitive arc magmas has largely focused on their origins at depth, while significantly less is known about pre-eruptive crustal storage and ascent history. This study examines the crustal storage and ascent history of the Mt. Shasta primitive magnesian andesite (PMA), the demonstrated dominant parent magma for the abundant mixed andesites erupted at Mt. Shasta. Petrographic and geochemical observations of the PMA identify a mid-crustal magma mixing event with a less evolved relative of the PMA recorded in multiple populations of reversely zoned clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene phenocrysts. Prior phase equilibrium experiments and thermobarometric calculations as part of this study suggest the PMA experienced storage, mixing with a less evolved version of itself, and subsequent crystallization at 5kbar and 975°C. Modeling of Fe-Mg interdiffusion between the rims and cores of the reversely-zoned clinopyroxene and orthopyroxenes suggest this mixing, crystallization and subsequent ascent occurred within 10 years, or ~2.9 (+6.5 / -2.5) years, prior to eruption. Ascent from 5kbar or ~15 km, with no meaningful shallower storage, suggests minimum crustal transit rates of ~5 km/year. This rate is comparable to only a couple of other similar types of crustal transit rates (and slower than the much faster, syn-eruptive ascent rates measured through methods like olivine-hosted melt embayment volatile gradients and U-series isotope measurements on other arc magmas). The results of this study help to constrain the pre-eruptive history and ascent rates of hydrous primitive arc magmas, illuminating their magmatic processes during ascent. When combined with geophysical signals of magma movement, mixing to eruption timescales such as this have the power to inform volcanic hazard models for monogenetic, cinder cone eruptions in the Southern Cascades. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Geological Sciences 2019

In international and highly-multilingual environments, it often happens, that a talk, a document, or any other input, needs to be translated into a massive number of other languages. However, it is not always an option to have a distinct system for each possible language pair due to the fact that training and operating such kind of translation systems is computationally demanding. Combining multiple target languages into one translation model usually causes a de- crease in quality of output for each its translation direction. In this thesis, we experiment with combinations of target languages to see, if a specific grouping of them can lead to better results than just randomly selecting target languages. We build upon a recent research on training a multilingual Transformer model without any change to its architecture: adding a target language tag to the source sentence. We trained a large number of bilingual and multilingual Transformer models and evaluated them on multiple test sets from different domains. We found that in most of the cases grouping related target languages into one model caused a better performance compared to models with randomly selected languages. The Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) Is Proteolytically Modified by the Matriptase-Prostasin Serine Protease Cascade in Cultured Epithelial Cells

Prostasin is expressed at the apical surface of normal epithelial cells and suppresses in vitro invasion of cancer cells. Prostasin re-expression in the PC-3 prostate carcinoma cells down-regulated the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) protein expression and EGF-induced phosphorylation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinases (Erk1/2). We report here that prostasin and its activating enzyme matriptase are capable of inducing proteolytic cleavages in the EGFR extracellular domain (ECD) when co-expressed in the FT-293 cells, generating two amino-terminally truncated fragments EGFR135 and EGFR110, at 135 and 110 kDa. Prostasin's role in EGFR cleavage is dependent on the serine active-site but not the GPI-anchor. The modifications of EGFR were confirmed to be on the primary structure by deglycosylation. EGFR135 and EGFR110 are not responsive to EGF stimulation, indicating loss of the ligand-binding domains. EGFR110 is constitutively phosphorylated and in its presence Erk1/2 phosphorylation is increased in the absence of EGF. The protease-induced EGFR cleavages are not dependent on EGFR phosphorylation. The EGFR ECD proteolytic modification by matriptase-prostasin is also observed in the BEAS-2B normal lung epithelial cells, the BPH-1 benign prostate hyperplasia and the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines; and represents a novel mechanism for epithelial cells to modulate EGF-EGFR signaling.

Block Periodization Programming: Efficacy in Subjects of Differing Strength Levels

Physiological muscle adaptations due to resistance training are still not fully known. The rate and area of hypertrophy could drastically help or hinder athletic performance. The purpose of this study was to observe the changes in lean body mass (and related factors), relative allometrically scaled strength and absolute strength through an 11-week block periodized resistance training program. The subjects (n = 15) realized an increase in total body water (pre = 49.77Kg; post = 51.70Kg), lean body mass (pre = 67.98Kg; post = 70.63Kg), adjusted lean body mass (pre = 20.35Kg; post = 21.03Kg) and cross sectional area (pre = 32.73 cm2; post = 36.33cm2). Subjects (n= 15) were divided into either a strong (1 RM ≥ 1.75x body weight), moderate (1 RM = ≥ 1.25-1.74x body weight), or weak (1 RM < 1.25x body weight) group and data were analyzed in pre-post training. While all subjects showed gains in LBM and related factors, initial strength levels altered these adaptations. Subjects with a lower initial maximum strength level tended to make greater gains. However, due to the increase in total body water and relatively small increases in adjusted LBM, it appears, among this group, that little myofibrillar hypertrophy occurred during this short training period. These data suggest that greater accuracy for measures of alterations in LBM and related factors may require measures of total body water.

Provenance of the ice-cored moraine at Mt. Achernar, Law Glacier, Antarctica

Glacial till from the Mt. Achernar moraine (MAM) records pre- and post- last glacial maximum (LGM) compositional variability of an East Antarctic moraine sequence through time and space. Pebble lithology, detrital zircon geochronology, and till geochemistry were analyzed on samples from a 6.5 km transect. Hummocky topography occurs with the most recently exposed material along the active ice margin (Zone 1), followed by a relatively flat and low region (Zone 2), and then a series of ~2 m high parallel/sub-parallel ridges and troughs accompanied by distinct color changes that are directly related to the dominant lithology of the region (Zones 3–5). Zone 3 is dominated by ~38% more sedimentary rocks than adjacent zones and has an overall shape of a broad arch superimposed with smaller ridges. Zone 4 is composed of distinct colored bands that alternate between dominant sedimentary and mafic igneous lithologies. These dominant sedimentary and intermediate/mafic igneous rocks for all Zones are interpreted to be primarily the Beacon and Ferrar Supergroup rocks respectively. The U/Pb data from the till is consistent with a Beacon Supergroup source as samples consistently show significant populations from the Permian ~250-260 Ma, the Proterozoic ~565–600 Ma, ~950–1270 Ma, and ~2300-2320 Ma, as well as (and) the late Archean ~2700-2770 Ma. The Pagoda, Mackellar, Buckley, and Fremouw Formations are potential sources of the detrital zircons. When paired with surface exposure ages, the U/Pb data indicates that the debris source has been consistent over the past ~555 ka, implying relatively stable ice sheet behavior. However, ice sheet change is indicated by a trim line present on Mt. Achernar that can be traced back to the boundary between Zones 3 and 4, as well as a change in pebble lithology, geochemistry, and morphology of Zone 3. Zone 3 records a time of ice sheet thickening and a change in provenance during the LGM. Zone 4 is pre-LGM, Zone 2 records deglaciation, and Zone 1 is still actively connected to the Law Glacier. This study reveals the broader importance of using multiple provenance techniques when interpreting provenance changes in till over time.
