Tais questões visam melhor compreender a progressiva politização do espaço maçônico, sobretudo, no período que antecedeu a Independência, marco primeiro da construção do Estado Nacional brasileiro / Abstract: This dissertation aims to analyze the presence of the masonic sociability in Brazil with a especial focus on Rio de Janeiro city at the turn ofthe eighteenth century and the first two decades ofthe nineteenth century. In approaching the cultural history of fteemasonry, enlightened sociability and the process toward independence it deals with the lodges' main devices for cooptating new members; their internal organization; the members' motivations for affiliating with the masonic order; the relationship between Freemasonry, the Portuguese monarchical State and the Catholic Church; and the connections between fteemasons on the two sides of the Atlantic OceanoIn this way one may better visualize the progressive politicization that took place within the masonic environment mostly in the preceding years of the Independence, a first step toward the constrnction of the Brazilian national State / Doutorado / Doutor em História
