Strengthening of concrete beams with composite plastic platesAn, Wei, 1963- January 1990 (has links)
This study investigates the feasibility of strengthening reinforced concrete beams with epoxy-bonded Glass-Fiber-Reinforced-Plastic (GFRP) plates. The composite plate is epoxy-bonded to the tension flange of the beam to increase its stiffness and strength. Seven rectangular and one T-beam, retrofitted with composite plates, were tested to failure under symmetrical 4-point bending. The load versus deflection and the load versus strain in the composite plate, steel rebar and the extreme compression fiber of concrete were measured and plotted for the midspan section throughout the entire range of loading up to failure. Analytical models based on the equilibrium of forces and compatibility of deformations were developed to predict the stresses and deformations of the beam in the linear and nonlinear regions. The predicted and measured results correlated well. The analytical models were used in a parametric study to investigate the effects of design variables such as, plate area, plate strength and stiffness, reinforcement ratio, etc., on the moment-curvature relationships of typical rectangular and T cross sections.

An analysis of the effectiveness of the asset maintenance plan at Spoornet : case study : class diesel locomotives (traction and rolling stock)De Wet Vorster, Hendrik January 2001 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Peninsula Technikon, 2001 / Maintenance of locomotives is the main function of Bellville Locomotive Traction
Depot in the Western Cape. Therefore, it is important to have a sound maintenance
plan in place, to prevent a negative impact on the availability and reliability of
locomotive supply for hauling power to train services.
The purpose of the research is to determine the causes of the increased frequency
of maintenance through a case study relating to 35-class locomotives. The
abnormal increased frequency of wheel change and inter-bogie control repairs on
35-class diesel locomotives is investigated.
A research survey was adopted, which included questionnaires and personal
interviews based on the literature search. The target group is L&N section, which
includes below-deck maintenance, overhaul and change out, repairs to locomotive
bogies, frames, wheels, snubbers, inter-bogie control and traction motors. Sixteen
people are responsible for all below-deck repairs and service of 52 locomotives.
The results of the research will expose the shortcomings of the maintenance plan
and propose solutions. This will be achieved by testing the effectiveness of the
existing maintenance plan at Spoornet through the identification of the causes for
the abnormal increase in wheel changes and inter-bogie control repairs on 35-class
diesel locomotives.
The outcome from this case study research will be to quantify the benefits arising
from the effective application of a maintenance plan.

Concrete repair with realkalisation and the management thereofTshibangu, W. A. Muzemba. 15 August 2012 (has links)
M.Ing. / Maintaining and repairing building stock, repair and replacement of the infrastructure, has been a facet of the European building industry for more than 50 years. Deterioration of structures to a level that renders them unusable is a more recent occurrence in South Africa. World-wide changes in the proportion of construction expenditure on new construction and repair and refurbishing of existing structures has occurred only the last two decades. Today, nearly 50 % of such expenditure is on repair and renovation in comparison to proportions of 30 % of previous years. Projections indicate that this trend will continue at least to the next coming century. 1171 Such a substantial proportion of construction expenditure must be expected to influence the market for repair materials, specialized techniques and services. Therefore, a good understanding of the all range of modern concrete repair materials, associated techniques and services as well as latest developments in concrete rehabilitation technology is a prerequisite for designers and users of concrete structures. The following pages attempt to present the basic background of modern concrete repair approaches with regard to the intended use of building structures. They will also deal with the management of a repair project with realkalisation as a remediation strategy. The present condition of the Rand Afrikaans University main campus buildings will serve as a case study model.

The International Space Station comparative maintenance analysis model (CMAM)Soldon, Brian T. 09 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / The National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) and its prime
contractors currently use a software tool called RMAT (the Reliability and
Maintainability Assessment Tool) for the forecasting of Orbital Replacement Unit
(ORU) failure rates and associated maintenance demands for the International
Space Station (ISS). This thesis introduces a new model: CMAM (the
Comparative Maintenance Analysis Tool), which was developed to replicate
some of the basic functionality of RMAT in order to provide a comparative look at
RMAT results. The CMAM program, developed in Visual Basic.net and
dynamically linked to a Microsoft ACCESS database, focuses on a
representative set of critical Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs that represent key
items that require both internal and external maintenance in both pressurized and
un-pressurized storage) and generated failure rate data for each critical ORU.
The results of the CMAM model are then compared with the failure rates
generated by RMAT program for the same set of critical ORUs. These two
independently developed sets of data are then analyzed against historic failure
rates for these ISS parts. / Major, United States Army

An analysis of the prediction accuracy of the U.S. Navy repair turn-around time forecast model / Analysis of the prediction accuracy of the United States Navy repair turn-around time forecast modelSantos, William O. 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This thesis examines the forecast accuracy of repair times for a subset of repairable U.S Navy inventory items. Forecasts are currently calculated using the Uniform Inventory Control Program (UICP) on a quarterly basis. The UICP model use the time of repairs completed in the current quarter to update a "file" value in order to forecast the repair times for the following quarter. Forecasts are calculated separately for repairable items grouped into families. This thesis demonstrates that aggregation repairs by their completion dates, as currently done by the UICP model, causes forecast to be affected by the nature of the repair arrival process. The more that this process differs from a Poisson process, the more that the forecast values are affected. Using bootstrap simulations, the effect of the repair process on the forecasting is quantified. This thesis also explores alternatives to the UICP model for forecasting repair times. In particular, an approach that utilizes repairs that have not been completed by the end of the current quarter is developed. / Captain, Brazilian Army

Cost benefit analysis of pier refueling versus barge refueling at the Fleet Industrial Supply Center Fuel Facility Pearl Harbor, HawaiiDrake, Roy 06 1900 (has links)
MBA Professional Report / Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited. / The purpose of this MBA project was to complete a cost-benefit analysis of refueling via pipeline versus refueling via barge at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The alternatives are (1) refueling via a combination of pipeline and barge (status quo), (2) refueling via a single pipeline, and (3) refueling via barge only. The objective was to compare the three alternatives, choosing that alternative that provides the greater net benefit and most efficient use of resources. The analysis involved data collection of labor costs, pipeline operations (flow rates data, costs of repairs, and operational costs), barge operational costs, and environmental protection costs. This Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) will be valuable to personnel with approval authority who make decisions on the merits of future pipeline projects. This CBA can be used to evaluate other Navy bases' refueling operations worldwide. / Lieutenant Commander, United States Navy

Partial discharge measurement in distribution power transformers.Sithole, Calvin. January 2013 (has links)
M. Tech. Electrical Engineering. / Discusses the appearance of partial discharge (PDs) is a problem of insulation failure in high voltage equipment used in power plants. As the insulation of equipment has a sensitive zone, therefore the quality of insulation plays an important role in such power equipment. PDs in power transformers are capable of leading to corrosion on solid insulating materials, thereby in the long term, causing a breakdown of the particular operating component. It follows that the real challenge is to identify the most appropriate method for the measurement and/or detection of PDs.
