Teacher Candidates As The Agents Of Change For A More Gender Equal Society

For the purpose of achieving gender equality in education, this study analyses the transformative power of the elementary school teacher candidates on society. The theories in the field of sociology of education have been used as a starting point for the study. Based on the feminist pedagogies of different strands of feminism, feminist critical pedagogy has been presented to achieve gender equality in education. The transformation of curriculum and the hidden curriculum are elaborated to achieve a non-sexist education. After the depiction of the situation Turkey holds in the field of women&rsquo / s education, the research conducted in three universities using feminist methodology and interview method is presented. With a view on their gender socialization, gender perceptions of the teacher candidates are analyzed. The ways their lives both inside and outside the household are affected by patriarchal hegemony are depicted and their ideas on education and the reproduction of gender through education are analyzed. The new generation of teachers holds low transformative power to transform the inequalities in society. However, the females in the group are leading their own individual struggles that lead to changes in their close circles. The simplified notion of patriarchy they have makes them blind to the reproduction of it by women and supports the bias against feminists. The fact that they are open to change and yet detached from civil society is reason to conclude that in the short run the most influential results can be obtained through the institutional changes at teacher training programs and schools.

This thesis concerns subject of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C), ritual commonly - but inaccurately - named female circumcision. In the thesis I analyze two autobiographical texts written by women who got through the FGM/C - Mutilated written by Senegal author Khady and Desert Flower by Somali author Waris Dirie. Aim of this thesis is to analyze view point of two women who have direct experience with FGM/C, to add more information to research of this ritual and to strengthen effort to understand structural reasons for its existence and continuance. I attach myself to the side of opponents to FGM/C and by this thesis I'd wish to help to banish this ritual. My effort is connected with my feminist conviction but also with human rights discourse. ABSTRAKT Tato diplomová práce zkoumá problematiku Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C), rituálu u nás běžně - avšak nepřesně - nazývaného ženská obřízka. V diplomové práci analyzuji dva autobiografické příběhy žen, které prožily FGM/C. Jedná se o knihy Zmrzačená od senegalské autorky Khady a Květ pouště od somálské autorky Waris Dirie. Cílem tohoto výzkumu je analyzovat pohled dvou žen na rituál FGM/C, připojit další informace ke zkoumané problematice FGM/C, a tak rozšířit nejen znalosti týkající se rituálu samotného, ale zejména podpořit snahu...

El objetivo del estudio fue describir las representaciones sociales de la hegemonía masculina dentro de la División de Operaciones Especiales del Escuadrón Verde de la Policía Nacional del Perú (PNP). Para tal fin, se desarrolló un estudio cualitativo y se adoptó un diseño fenomenológico hermenéutico, aplicando la técnica de la entrevista a profundidad a un grupo de 8 policías, cuyas edades se encontraron en el rango de 23 a 31 años. Los principales resultados indican que la hegemonía existente puede ser aceptada por algunas mujeres y rechazadas por otras. Sin embargo, esto no evita la existencia de alianzas implícitas que fomentan la marginación de lo femenino. Se concluye que la hegemonía masculina dentro de la unidad policial genera limitaciones en sus funciones y propicia el malestar en los hombres y las mujeres. / The objective of the study was to describe the social representations of male hegemony within the Special Operations Division of the Green Squad of the National Police of Peru (PNP). For this purpose, a qualitative study was developed and a hermeneutical phenomenological design was adopted, applying the in-depth interview technique to a group of 8 cops, whose ages ranged from 23 to 31 years. The main results indicate that the existing hegemony can be accepted by some women and rejected by others. However, this does not prevent the existence of implicit alliances that promote the marginalization of the feminine. It is concluded that male hegemony within the police unit generates limitations in its functions and fosters discomfort in men and women. / Tesis

Framing the presidency : presidential depictions on Fox's fictional drama 24

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Framing theory is one of the most used theories in the discussion of media effects on how people make sense of issues, especially in the political environment. Although it is majorly used for the discussion of news media, framing theory can also be applied in other areas surrounding media production. This thesis uses this theory to discuss how presidents are framed in fiction and implications of race and gender in the assessment of presidential characters by analyzing Fox’s fictional drama 24. Although at first the show seems to bring new options for the presidency, the analysis points Presidents Palmer and Taylor as unfit for office and President Logan as unethical and power-hungry. Following Entman’s (1993) process for analyzing frames in media, embedded white male hegemony was identified in the show. As the show presented a postfeminist and postracial world, it continued to frame femininity and blackness as the opposite to effective executive leadership. Further, white masculinity was associated with power, ambition and ultimately corruption. As other races and gender were pointed as unfit, the status quo was questioned as being corrupt. The show both increases the cynicism that people may develop against politics and damages a more proper consideration of women and people of color to be elected president.
