The impact of managed care on psychologists' ability to accurately diagnose, treat and perceive their clients

Gaies, Samantha Elizabeth 15 April 2014 (has links)
It has been demonstrated psychologists are more likely to over-diagnose clients to obtain reimbursement if clients are using insurance (Pomerantz & Segrist, 2006). Although diagnoses are helpful in providing direction for treatment plans, incorrect diagnoses may be stigmatizing and result in flawed care (Wahl, 1999). Using an experimental design with video vignettes simulating therapy sessions, this paper will explore whether psychologists tend to excessively believe in false diagnoses when forced to provide them, as well as whether those labels negatively affect psychologists' opinions of clients. Hierarchical multiple regression will be used to determine if those in the group forced to diagnose a client tend to over-diagnose and have a more negative opinion of the client. / text

台灣期貨信託基金產業之發展探討與個案分析 / Research on the Development of Taiwan's Managed Futures Funds and A Case Study

張寶文, Chang, Pao Wen Unknown Date (has links)

Exploiting language abstraction to optimize memory efficiency

Sartor, Jennifer Bedke 13 December 2010 (has links)
The programming language and underlying hardware determine application performance, and both are undergoing revolutionary shifts. As applications have become more sophisticated and capable, programmers have chosen managed languages in many domains for ease of development. These languages abstract memory management from the programmer, which can introduce time and space overhead but also provide opportunities for dynamic optimization. Optimizing memory performance is in part paramount because hardware is reaching physical limits. Recent trends towards chip multiprocessor machines exacerbate the memory system bottleneck because they are adding cores without adding commensurate bandwidth. Both language and architecture trends add stress to the memory system and degrade application performance. This dissertation exploits the language abstraction to analyze and optimize memory efficiency on emerging hardware. We study the sources of memory inefficiencies on two levels: heap data and hardware storage traffic. We design and implement optimizations that change the heap layout of arrays, and use program semantics to eliminate useless memory traffic. These techniques improve memory system efficiency and performance. We first quantitatively characterize the problem by comparing many data compression algorithms and their combinations in a limit study of Java benchmarks. We find that arrays are a dominant source of heap inefficiency. We introduce z-rays, a new array layout design, to bridge the gap between fast access, space efficiency and predictability. Z-rays facilitate compression and offer flexibility, and time and space efficiency. We find that there is a semantic mismatch between managed languages, with their rapid allocation rates, and current hardware, causing unnecessary and excessive traffic in the memory subsystem. We take advantage of the garbage collector's identification of dead data regions, communicating information to the caches to eliminate useless traffic to memory. By reducing traffic and bandwidth, we improve performance. We show that the memory abstraction in managed languages is not just a cost to be borne, but an opportunity to alleviate the memory bottleneck. This thesis shows how to exploit this abstraction to improve space and time efficiency and overcome the memory wall. We enhance the productivity and performance of ubiquitous managed languages on current and future architectures. / text

Finding the balance: comparing the effectiveness of student-managed and teacher-directed learning in science classes.

Bell, Colin R. January 2000 (has links)
The purpose of the research was to form a defensible basis for considering possible changes in classroom practice within a small rural state school, and it involved four, mixed-ability classes comprising Year 9 and 10 students. These classes were taught an energy-related module by the researcher. In the preliminary phase, which involved two classes, resources were developed to produce a more student-centred module. These resources, and the constructivist approach which informed their development, are described. In the subsequent comparative phase, the reformed module was taught using two contrasting strategies - one teacher-directed and the other, student-managed. During this phase individual achievement and group investigative skills were assessed. Student perceptions of classroom environment were probed using an existing instrument, the ICEQ. The range of classroom activity and level of student engagement was continuously monitored by independent observers using a specifically developed instrument, termed the SALTA.No overall learning advantage was demonstrated to either teaching strategy. A small strategy advantage favouring Year 10 students in the student-managed strategy was offset by a similar disadvantage to the Year 9 cohort. A cohort penalty was found to apply to Year 9 students under either strategy, with a paradox in its application. The role of the teacher was found to change significantly under each strategy, with a consistent hierarchy of student engagement with activity emerging. Boys were found to have significantly higher levels of engagement than girls under either teaching strategy. However, this was associated with only modest advantages in achievement. The relationship between engagement and achievement was stronger and more positive under the student-managed strategy. Mismatches between preferred and actual classroom environment were found, ++ / particularly in the dimension of independence. This mismatch was less in the student-managed setting. Increased potential for learning was noted under each strategy.
