An evaluation of parent involvement in the govemance of primary schools

A mini-dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Education in the Department of Educational Planning and Administration at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2009. / This study offers a critical appraisal of the role that the parent component of the School Governing Body (SGB) plays in governing primary schools. A literature review established the functions and significance of parent contributions to school governance. The study investigated strategies that can enhance parent participation. An empirical study then set out to test the extent and success of parent involvement in school governance. The study revealed that parent involvement in schools is limited and superficial. The empirical data suggested that: • Some principals are reluctant to allow parents their legitimate right to participate actively in the governance of schools, governors in some schools merely exist to 'rubber-stamp' decisions already made by principals. • Many parents do not have the necessary knowledge about school governance in general, and lack the necessary expertise required to enable them to participate effectively in decision¬making on school issues. The study was concluded by way of recommendations which point to the means to improve efficiency in governance and to promote significant parent participation in school governance.

<p>The purpose of this study was to identify the positive and negative aspects of the work and dynamics of a management team and from that recommend how the team can improve. The aim was also to investigate whether there was a gap between how the members of the management team comprehend themselves and how the project, section and team managers comprehend the management team. The management team contains of seven core team members and is the head function of a research and development site in central Sweden. The results are based on interviews with the present members of the management team and three former members, a survey among the project, section and team managers and by participating observation on meetings with the team. The results show that the management team is an overall well-functioning team that with some changes and improvements, especially concerning communication and information, can reach even further. In addition the results show that there was no considerable gap between how the management team comprehends them and how the project, section and team managers comprehend the management team.</p>

Crisis Management : The nature of managing crises

Purpose - The purpose of this thesis is to provide recommendations for commercial organizations when managing crises. By examining the ongoing operations of health care organizations the thesis will investigate the application of a similar structure toward commercial organizations. Background - In the globalized a fast paced reality we operate in it is essential for organizations to be prepared for the unthinkable. This have been illustrated not only in reality, but also empathized by a vast amount of researchers. A survey made by Steelhenge, an international consultancy, argues that organizations are not sufficiently prepared for crises. Researchers have also notified this lack of crisis preparedness within organizations. We argue that being crisis prepared is an essential factor and responsibility for commercial organizations in modern society. Method - In order to answer the research questions we have used a qualitative research method. The qualitative research method is further linked to the descripto-exploratory purpose, abductive reasoning and directed content analysis that provide a mixture of concept and data driven categories. We have conducted semi-structured, one-on-one interviews within health care organizations and commercial organizations. The respondents were chosen by a purposive and self-selecting sampling method. Conclusion - The empirical study suggests that there are learning’s to be considered for commercial organizations by applying health care organizations operational structure. What can be concluded is that health care organizations rely on coordination between individuals or teams to solve multi-functional issues. Commercial organizations would implement CMT’s to use a similar structure with all the essential factors for efficient coordination.

Educational institutions in Quebec face a wide variety of challenges as major restructuring efforts take place. Schools must develop strategies to manage these increasing demands in an effective manner. / The purpose of the study was to contribute to the understanding of school administrative teams and to shed some light on the nature and function of these teams through a study of their administrative team meetings. / As a qualitative descriptive study, this research involved 24 secondary school administrators. Data collection techniques included postal surveys to gather initial descriptive data, followed by telephone interviews that allowed for more in-depth discussion of issues faced by the principals and their administrative team. / The findings provide strong evidence of the complexity of the nature of secondary school principals, work and the importance of working collaboratively with their administrative colleagues. / The study has implications for the preparation of aspiring educational administrators, as well as those who currently hold these roles in today's schools.

An evaluation of the effectiveness of school management teams of underperforming schools in the Central Region of the North West Province / Basetsaneng Betsy Tumane

The purpose of this study was to empirically assess the role played by school management teams (SMTs) of under-performing secondary schools in the Central Region in their efforts to improve. The evaluation criteria applied were those for effective schools and school leadership derived from the literature study. The survey method was employed to gather the data. A pre-tested 43 item questionnaire was used to evaluate SMTs on 7 effectiveness criteria . The subjects of the study were 80 SMT members and 66 educators from 29 randomly selected trapped schools out of the 45 in the region . The empirical investigation conducted found that SMTs are not effective on most of the crucial effectiveness criteria such as strategic leadership and curriculum leadership. Significantly wide differences of opinion on their effectiveness between the two groups of respondents were observed. SMTs rated themselves as mostly effective, while educators on the other hand rated SMTs as generally ineffective. Lastly, on the question of what can be done to assist underperforming schools become more effective, the investigation makes two main recommendations. First, intensive induction programmes for newly-appointed SMTs as well as on-going capacity- building programmes for experienced ones should be implemented.
