Sumering av projekt Det är något speciellt med ett hotell. Livet ur ett privat och offentligt perspektiv kokas ihop på en liten yta. I staden fungerar hotellet som mötesplats mellan det lokala och världen utanför. På vår tomt i Mariefred handlar det om krocken mellan den närliggande stadskärnan, Gripsholms slott och de med bil, ångbåt eller tåg anländande besökarna. Platsen har dock ett problem. Med en marknivå som knappt ligger över Mälarens vattenyta är tomten extremt känslig för översvämning och mättas ofta vid kraftiga regn. Ur denna förutsättning reser sig hotellet Vått & Torrt, en byggnad som vänt problemet till möjlighet och utnyttjat vattnets förmåga att stimulera våra mänskliga sinnen såväl som att skapa en ekologiskt hållbar plats. Hotellets rum formas runt en sänkning i tomten, som hamnar under grundvattennivån, och kan på så sätt få vatten att stå likt i en våtmark. En stilla morgon sitter gästerna och äter frukostbuffé på bryggan akompanjerat av en galande anka och vassen sus. På kvällen speglar sig festvåningens galej i vattnet och skapar ett ljusspel som får de sent anländande tågresenärerna att börja packa upp i jakt efter systemkameran redan på perrongen. Det sista den gamle tanten som hyrt rum nr 4 på plan 1 med balkongläge mot söder hör innan hon somnar i den gedigna hotellsängen är en kväkande skogsgroda. Exemplen ovan beskriver en ny typ av mötesplats där hotellets sociala rum gifter sig med naturresursen vatten. Min övertygelse är att alltid hitta platsens inneboende krafter i ett tidigt skede och skapa projektet utifrån dessa. På så sätt blir överaskningarna efter bygget övervägande positiva! För vem vill inte möta en gås på fönsterbläcket? / Summary of project There is something perticular about a hotel. Life from a private/public perspective are mould together on a small area. In the city the hotel functions as a meating point between the local and world around. On our site in Mariefred, the interesting is the clash between the small but dense city core and the parks that surrounds the castle of Gripsholm where there´s a big flow of visitiors arriving by car, steamboat or locomotive. The site has a problem. The groundlevel is just above lake Mälarens sealevel and thereby it´s very sensitive to flooding during heavy rain and snow melting. Out of these conditions the hotel "Vått & Torrt" are rising. A building that has turned the problem into a posibilty and uses the water to create a more sustainable place that also gives something nice to our human senses. The hotel are shaped around a lower on the plot, which has it´s ground level below the sea in order to make the water sustain on the site.

Uppgiften var att rita ett hotell i Mariefred och efter analys av platsen och utifrån de kopplingar som gjordes efter platsbesök utvecklades projektet till ett vandrarhem istället. Med en huvudbyggnad och minst sju stugor för övernattning utspridda i staden erbjuder de nya byggnaderna inte bara övernattning utan även nya plattformar att mötas på. I huvudbyggnaden som är ett typ av kulturhus finns lånesystem för cyklar, lyssnarböcker m.m. och som komplement till den kafé och restaurangdel som vandrarhemmet tillgodoser finns ett öppet kök för allmänheten och gästerna. Allt i samma plan på bottenvåningen. På taket finns en terass för gäster och allmänheten som tillgängligörs med en bred trappa och hela ytan ska fungera som en park för allmänheten. Dessa plan varvas med en blackbox i källaren och ett whiteroom på 1 tr. System liknande tvättstugebokningssytem används som lånestruktur. De stugor som är utplacerade i staden är placerade för att skapa intressanta möten med staden till exempel rådhustorget. Husens material består av stengodsreliefer med med motiv hämtade från personerna i staden och föremål samt folkets historia i staden. / The task was to draw a hotel in Mariefred and after analysis of the site and from the connections that were made by site visits developed the project to a hostel instead. With a main building and at least seven cabins for overnight scattered throughout town offer the new buildings not only accommodation but also new platforms to meet. MARIEFRED Mariefred är en stad som är känd för sin be- byggelse och historia. Staden är en välbevarad trähusstad och det lockar många turister under sommarmånaderna. I södra Mariefred ligger Gripsholms slott som även det är en turistmagnet under sommaren. TOMTEN Hotellets tomt ligger i västra Mariefred, precis i utkanten av den gamla stadskärnan. Från tomten kan det skapas olika vyer beroende på åt vilket håll man vänder sig mot. Åt söder finns Gripshol- ms slott, ett grönområde och Mälaren. Om man vänder sig åt öster har man den gamla delen av Mariefred. Åt nordväst finns Munkhagsgärdet, ett obebyggt område som historiskt har varit en del av slottets ägor. Vid gärdet fanns Grafikens hus innan det brann ner, och en gammal kyrkoruin från 1100-talet. Åt sydväst finns ett gammalt järn- vägsspår som används under turistsäsongen och ett stationshus. KONCEPT Observationshotellet är ett hotell som vänder sig åt fem olika håll, där varje sida visar något som är typiskt för Mariefred; slottet, södra staden, norra staden, gärdet och järnvägsområdet. Även hotell- rummens utformning är ett resultat av en studie i hur en utsikt kan påverka gestaltningen av ett rum. Hotellet blir ett sätt att uppleva delar av Mariefred i lugn och ro, och kanske upptäcka något som man har missat när man går runt i staden. UTFORMNING Hotellrummen har utformats efter en studie i hur rum kan utformas för att harmonisera med utsikten. Studien gav upphov till tre rumstyper, ett avlångt rum med fönster på ena kortsidan, ett avlångt rum med fönster på ena långsidan, och ett kvadratiskt rum med ett eller flera fönster på en av sidorna. Dessa rumstyper finns representerat i hela hotellet i olika storlekar. Rummen som ligger i hörnen av byggnaden har fått fönster åt två håll för att på så sätt skapa en panoramavy. På varje våningsplan har ett eller flera hotellrum plockats bort och istället blivit en liten publik lounge med utsikt. På så sätt kan man under vistelsen på hotellet uppleva fler vyer än bara den som finns på sitt egna hotellrum. / MARIEFRED Mariefred is a town well known for its architecture and history, it’s a well preserved town made of wooden houses and it is a popular place for tourist during the summer months. The Gripsholms castle is located in the south of Mariefred, and the castle is as well as the town itself popular amongst all the tourists visiting Mariefred. THE SITE The site of the hotel is located in the western part of the old town. The site offers a variety of different sights, depending on which direction you look at. In the south you can spot the Gripsholms castle, a little park just in front of the castle, and the lake Mälaren. If you turn to the east you see the old part of Mariefred. In the north- west is Munkhagsgärdet, an un-built field area that historically has been property of the Gripsholms castle. By the field lies an old church ruin from the 12th century. In the south-west lies the old railway that nowadays only is in use during the summer months. THE CONCEPT The observation hotel is a hotel that has five sides, each facing something typical and special for Mariefred; the castle, the south part of the old town, the north part of the old town, the old field, and the railway area. Also, the hotel rooms is a result of a study made in how a view can affect the shape and design of a room. The hotel becomes a way to experience parts of Mariefred in peace an quiet, and perhaps discover something that you haven’t seen walking around the town. THE DESIGN The hotel rooms are made as a result from a study in how rooms can be designed to fit the view. As a result of the study I continued working with three different room shapes, one rectangular shape with a window on one of the short sides, on rectangular shape with a window on one of the long sides, and one square shaped room with one or two windows on one of the sides. These different room types are represented in different sizes in the whole hotel. The rooms on the corners of the hotel has windows facing two views and creates more of a panorama view. On each floor one or more hotel rooms has been turned into a lounge area accessible for all of the hotel guests. The different views from these areas makes it possible for the guests to experience a variety of different views within the hotel.

Hotellet och badet i Mariefred ligger i korsningen mellan Storgatan och Gripsholmsvägen. Detta är även ingången till stadskärnan som präglas av mindre trähus och en hel del tegelbyggnader. Gripsholms slott som ligger söder om tomten är stadens viktigaste landmärke. Det är också där jag fått mycket av min inspiration. Dels tegelstrukturen och de runda formerna och bågformerna. Badet är ett viktigt koncept i mitt hotell. Det kom till efter att ha intervjuat Mariefredsbor som pratade mycket nostalgiskt om Strandrestaurangen som ligger på Mariefreds östra kust. Det är en stängd restaurang som bland annat hade kallbad.   Det nya badet ska vara en del av staden på sådant vis att alla ska ha tillgång till dess utbud. Både hotellgäster och mariefredsbor ska kunna bada där. Återigen ska folk kunna samlas på en plats, njuta, umgås etc. Poolen har både en tempererad del inomhus och en större del utomhus. Man kan nå utomhusdelen av poolen genom att simma under en glasvägg eller helt enkelt genom att gå från utsidan. På plan 2 finns en till pool, endast för hotellgäster.   Hotellets huvudingång är avskild från badets entré. Hotellet är på fem plan och varje plan har terrasser och trappar upp och blir mindre och mindre. Hotellets gestaltning präglas av bågformiga väggar i grå tegel och många glaspartier/fönster. Fönsterna är smala och höga och har olika avstånd beroende på hur fasaden ska upplevas. Byggnaden följer även böjningen på den viktigaste korsningen i Mariefred. / The hotel and the public bath in Mariefred are located at the intersection of Storgatan and Gripsholmvägen. This is also the entrance to the town that is characterized by small wooden houses and a lot of brick buildings. The inspiration came from the brick structure and the circular shapes and arcuate shapes in the Gripsholm’s Castle, which is located south of Mariefred and it is the city´s most important landmark. The bath is an important concept for my project. It came after interviewing people from Mariefred who spoke very nostalgic about Strandrestaurangen - restaurant located on Mariefred’s east coast. It is a restaurant that closed due to mold, and had among other things cold bath.   The new bath will be a part of the city in such a way that everyone should have access to its offerings. Both hotel guests and people living in Mariefred can come to swim there. Once again people will be able to gather in one place, enjoy, socialize, etc. The swimming pool has both a heated indoor part and a larger part that is located outdoors. You can reach the outdoor part of the pool by swimming through a glass wall or simply by walking from the outside. On the 2nd floor there is a pool, and it is only for hotel guests.   The hotel's main entrance is separate from bath entrance. The hotel is on five floors and each floor has terraces that are stepping up and becoming smaller and smaller. The hotel's design is characterized by curved walls of gray brick and many glass walls / windows. The windows are narrow and high and have different distances depending on how the facade should be experienced. The building also follows the curvature of the main intersection in Mariefred. / Hotel i bazen u Mariefredu se nalazi na raskrsnici glavne ulice, Gripsholmsvägen. Ovo je takodje ulaz u grad, pun malim drvenim kućama i ciglenim zgradama. Gripsholms dvorac se nalazi na jugu Mariefreda i to je najvažnije obeležje ovog grada. Tu sam dobila najvecu inspiraciju, uglavnom sto se tice cigle, kruznih oblika i lucnog oblika. Bazen je važan koncept mom hotelu i mom projektu. I ta ideja je nastala nakon razgovora sa stanovnicima Mariefreda koji su govorili veoma nostalgično o Strandrestaurangen - restoranu koji se nalazi na istočnoj obali Mariefreda. To je restoran, kojeg su zatvorili zbog napada budja, a imao je između ostalog  hladne kupke. Novi bazen će biti deo grada tako sto ce svako da ima pristup tim ponudama i zadovoljstvom koje takvo mesto pruza. Znaci, i gosti hotela i stanovnici Mariefreda ce moci tamo da se kupaju. Opet ce ljudi moći da se okupe na jednom mestu, da uživaju, da se druže, itd. Bazen ima jedan deo koji je unutra u hotelu, i jedan veći deo na otvorenom. Otvoreni deo može se dostići tako sto ces otplivati ispod staklenog zida ili jednostavno ces doci do njega od spolja. Na 2. spratu se nalazi bazen, samo za goste hotela. Glavni ulaz u hotel je odvojen od ulaza za bazen. Hotel se sastoji od pet spratova i svaki sprat ima terase koje se stepenasto smanjuju na gore. Dizajn hotela se karakteriše zakrivljenim zidovima sive cigle i mnogobrojnim staklenim zidovima / prozorima. Prozori su uski i visoki i imaju različite razdaljine u zavisnosti od toga kakav izraz fasada treba da da. Zgrada takođe prati krivinu glavnoj raskrsnici u Mariefredu.

Vi behöver platser där vi inte hela tiden kan vara på andra ställen. Gränsen mellan ute och inne, mellan här och där behöver inte alltid suddas ut. Vi kan må bra av att förstärka den ibland. Att inte hela tiden kunna välja. Restaurangen ska vara en plats där man kan fokusera på maten, på sitt sällskap. Inte vara någon annanstans. Inte hålla på med något annat. WIFI fritt vore fint. Rummet är kyrkligt med sin tunga betong och ljus från ovan samt indirekt från innergården. Långbord för att möta andra. Möbler i trä. Annars betong och så mjölkvita fönster ut mot innergården. Dubbeltakhöjd. Skalar man bort distraktioner så hamnar fokuset på det som är kvar alltså sällskapet och maten. Innergården är viktig och ska erbjuda vandrarhemsgästerna samt restaurangbesökarna en avskild plats utomhus. En plats skild från huset och skild i från Mariefred. Få material. Betong, Glas, Grus och Björkar. En trappa leder ner till en plan där man kan sitta på stolar vid bord eller på trappstegen. Glaspartierna släpper här igenom ljus inifrån byggnaden men erbjuder mer privat atmosfär än om det vore genomskinligt. Tänker mig att det kan bli väldigt fint på natten när baren och restaurangen alstrar mycket ljus. Kanske i olika färger. I sovsalarna är det framförallt avskalat. Det är sängar på höjden. Knirr och knarr. Snarkande och hostande. Ett stort fönster med sittplats. Fönstret är viktigt inte bara för utsikten utan för att ge de boende information om hur de ska förbereda sig för att gå ut. Betong och trä. Ett handfat, klädskåp som på simhall. Ett bord och bänk.  I korridorerna är det betong, takfönster, och fokus på rörelse till rum på övre plan. På undre kommer har man kopplingen till innergården. Som en Finlandsbåt fast fint. Man är som på väg till sin hytt. Jag känner att Mariefred kräver fler material, byggnadstyper för att  kännas tillgänglig, tolerant och öppen och den behöver rum där man kan dra sig undan från staden själv. Platser som skiljer sig från det övriga. Som tilltalar andra. Kanske inte majoriteten men det är inte poängen. / We need places where we don’t have the option to be in another place. The boundary between inside and outside, between here and there do not always have to be erased. We might as well strengthenit  sometimes. Not have to choose all the time. The restaurant should be a place where you can focus on the food, on your companion. Not to be elsewhere. To not be occupied with anything else. WIFI free would be nice. The room is like a church with its heavy concrete and light from above and indirectly from the courtyard. Long table for meeting others. Wooden furniture. Otherwise, concrete and so milky white windows facing the courtyard. Double ceiling height. If you remove distractions you increase the focus on what is left, the party and the food. The courtyard is important and should offer hostel guests and restaurant visitors a secluded spot outdoors. A place separate from the house and Mariefred. Few materials. Concrete, Glass, Gravel and birches. A staircase leads down to a level where you can sit on chairs at tables or on the steps. The glazed sections lets the light  through from inside the building but offers more private atmosphere than if it were transparent. I Imagine that this could be very nice at night when the bar and restaurant produces very bright light. Perhaps in different colors.  In the dorms, it is mainly unadorned. There are beds in stacks. Knirr and squeaks. Snoring and coughing. A large window seat. The window is important not only for the view but to give residents information about how to prepare to go out. Concrete and wood. A sink, cupboards as the indoor swimming pool. A table and bench. In the corridors it is concrete, skylights, and a focus on operating the rooms on the upper floor. At the bottom will have the link to the courtyard. As an a ferry. You are on your way to your cabin. I feel that Mariefred require more materials, building types to feel accessible, tolerant and open, and it needs room where you can pull away from the town itself. Places that are different from the other. That appeals to others. Maybe not the majority but that's not the point.

This project investigates the relations light and shape in a museum of graphic arts. The nature of daylight determines the meeting between the building and the sky. The shape of the building, therefore, distributes the light thus facilitating the meeting between the visitor and the art. The best light in art museums is neutral and avoids sharp contrasts and shadows that would otherwise detract from the experience in the museum. I studied how different shapes influence light and found a rounded shape to produce the best results, distributing light evenly thus avoiding distracting contrasts. Rounded shapes from a quadratic base with straight walls optimize the distribution of the light, facilitating the interaction between the visitor and the art.  The building of the museum is part of a “light-game” with a quadratic base. The conspicuous shapes distribute the light, guiding the visitor in the world of art. In the north, the building has a density next to the car park while it interacts with the shapes producing an intimate small-scale feeling in the south. / Projektet undersöker relationen mellan ljus och form i ett museum för grafisk konst. Ljusets natur bestämmer samspelet mellan byggnad och himmel. Byggnadens form fördelar ljuset och underlättar besökarens mötte med konsten. I konsthallar är det kontrastfria, neutrala ljuset det bästa; skuggspel och ljusförändringar stör upplevelsen. I mina studier fann jag att en välvd form fördelade ljuset jämt, störande kontraster undviks. Den välvda formen fördelade ljuset på bästa sätt och uppfyllde kravet som konsten ställer inför mötet med betraktaren. Den välva formen med en kvadratisk bas i botten och raka neutrala väggar.Byggnaden blir ett spel där formerna framstår mot en grid-baserad bas (VAD ÄR GRID-BASERAD?). Det tydliga formspråket är anslående och vägleder besökaren. Byggnaden har en ”täthet” i norr, vid bilparkeringen, och omgivningen utanför samspelar med formerna ner mot södra sidan och skapar tillsammans en småskalighet. Byggnaden går från att ha en hög densitet i norr mot bilparkeringen, till att spela med ute och inne mot dess södra sida för att även passa in i den småskaliga omgivningen.

Då Mariefred är en säsongsbetonad turistort, kändes det viktigt att i en sann stadshotellsanda bidra med publika funktioner för även invånare. Det är i stadshotellet som möten mellan invånare och gäst sker, mellan bekanta och främlingar, mellan nya och gamla ansikten. Stadshotellet ska vara öppet och tillgängligt för alla, därför var det viktigt med publika funktioner i bottenplan med siktlinjer genom tomten. Ljus, möten, siktlinjer och rörelser, som kännetecknar platser, återfinns i hotellets atrium som ger det ljus och siktlinjer som söktes. Den strikta formen har ett lekfullt uttryck i fasad för att skapa ett intressant tillägg till platsen och en kontrasterande relation till det centrala ovala rummet. Runt atriet skapades loftgångar, där platsen blev en inspiration, och klostergårdar och arabisk arkitektur, där man från balkongerna får ta del av livet på gatan var referenser. Här blir lobbyn livet som man får ta del utav uppifrån. / Hotel Atrium is built in the small town Mariefred, which is a seasonal tourist resort. The hotel offers public functions for both hotel residents and residents of Mariefred. Around the atrium there are exterior corridors to which the lobby is the central room that you can overlook from the balconies and take part of the life there, inspired by Arabic and cloister architecture.

Mariefred, en småstadsidyll vid Mälaren med bevarad trähusbebyggelse och stadsplan från 1700-talet. Detta projekt tog ursprung i den variation som finns bland bebyggelsen i trästaden. Med små skillnader i uttryck, färgsättning, till- och ombyggnader skapas en speciell karaktär i Mariefred. Med projektet ville jag sammanföra den karaktären och känslan av variation med hotellet för att bryta av mot den traditionella hotellbyggnaden med långa korridorer och generella uttryck. Ett trähus för att knyta an till trästaden men en modernare version än vad som finns där idag. Det huvudsakliga greppet för att skapa denna variation är en förskjutning av våningsplanen. Förskjutningen skapar olika takhöjder på bottenplanet och genom detta bryts korridoren mellan hotellrummen upp och fördelar rummen på flera halvplan. För Mariefred skapas ett hotell i entrén till staden med plats för allmänheten genom restaurang med uteservering, plats för personalen och verksamheten och plats för gäster genom rum med variation som ska få bidra till att ge en mer personlig hotellmiljö och upplevelse av vistelsen i Mariefred. / Mariefred, a charming small town just by the lake Mälaren with preserved wooden house buildings and a city plan from the late 1700s. This project started with the variation that exists among the buildings in the old town of wooden houses. With small differences in their expression, colouring, extensions and rebuilding a special character is created in Mariefred. With the project I wanted to combine that character and the sense of variation with the hotel to break the traditional hotel building with corridors and a general expression. A wooden building to connect to the city but with a more modern style then what is there today.         The main way to create this variation was a shifting of the floor heights. The shift makes different heights in the rooms on the bottom floor and on the other floors the shift breaks the corridors between the hotel rooms and divide the rooms to different levels.   Mariefred is given a hotel at the entrance of the city with space for the public through a restaurant, space for the staff and the activity and space for the guests by rooms with variation that gives the hotel environment and the stay in Mariefred more personality.

Tanken med projektet är att skapa en park och ett hotell på en och samma tomt. Delar av hotellet och dess gård är tänkt att vara öppet för alla Mariefreds invånare, inte bara boende på hotellet. Detta anspelar också på gamla tiders stadshotell som ofta hade vissa publika ytor, festsal eller liknande. Antalet besökande gäster varierar stort mellan sommaren och vintern, därför har jag valt att rita ett hus som varierar i storlek efter säsong. På sommaren är det störst, med sovsalar och extra café, och en trädgård som serveringen kan vandra ut i. Men på vintern är det enbart de nödvändiga funktionerna som är öppna. Hotellet sluter då sig i en tempererad och kompakt, inre delen. Men även på vintern behövs lite grönska, därför är ett åretruntväxthus kopplat till den vinteröppna delen. I växthuset finner man en lounge med medelhavsklimat året runt, där växer bland annat fikonträd och akacia. / The idea of the project was to create a park anda hotel on the same plot. Throughout all of the project parts of the hote land its courtyard has been thought of as open to the public and to the inhabitants of Mariefred, not only residents of the hotel. This also alludes to the old-time town hotel which often had some public spaces, ballroom, or the like. The number of guests varies greatly between summer and winter, so I chose to design a house that varies in size with the seasons. In summer it is the biggest, with dorms and extra café, and a garden that serves as extra space for the café when necessary. In winter it is only the necessary functions that are open. The hotel then closes in a temperate and compact, inner volume. But even in winter you need a little greenery, thus, is a year round green house linked to the winter open part. In the greenhouse, one finds a lounge with a Mediterranean climate year round, which is growing among other fig trees and acacia.
