The Importance Of Addressing Acculturative Stress In Marital Therapy With Hispanic American Women

Hammons, Mary 01 January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between acculturative stress and marital distress among Hispanic American women and to explore the potential mediating roles of variables believed to be important to marital functioning among ethnic minorities and immigrants (e.g., acculturation, ethnic identity, social support, etc.). Based on data from 103 Hispanic American married women, pressure to acculturate toward the dominant culture of the U.S. was found to significantly correlate with the amount of distress the women reported in their marital relationships. Two variables were found to partially mediate the correlation. Perceived social support and recent stressful life events attenuated the effect acculturative stress had on marital distress. The importance for mental health professionals to address acculturative stress with Hispanic women or couples in marital therapy, and other clinical implications of the findings, are discussed.

A study on love choice of women for men in the condition of prisoner

Zago, Adriano Volnei 07 April 2011 (has links)
This research proposes a reflection on the establishment of passionate feeling, from which rise up to the couple, having as main and specific focus women who choose as lover a man in the condition of prisoner. A theoretical study is done through the reading of psychoanalytic texts, especially of Freud and other authors from Psychoanalysis and complementary areas such as Sociology. The choice of object, the projective idealization and narcissism as the basis of intrapsychic are relevant concepts for addressing some of the mechanisms involved in this kind of relationship. Five female volunteers will be analyzed (from semi-directed interviews) that fit the purpose of this study, pre-selected in a survey study conducted in the input queue to visit three Provisional Detention Centers (CDP) of the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. The idealization is seen as the prerogative to choose and maintain the loving relationship in question. Factors such as the condition of fellow inmate, conjugal visits, preparations for the meeting, the absence of the partner in everyday life, women\'s caring personality, the character of the law-braker man delineate some of the vicissitudes of marital dynamics established, expressing thus, a peculiar context of the universe that involves a choice of love so specific

O amor é uma história: satisfação e complementaridade de papéis no relacionamento conjugal / Love is a story: satisfaction and social roles`complimentarily on couple relationships.

Mayor, Andréa Soutto 13 December 2007 (has links)
The general purpose of this research was to identify any possible relationships between Robert Steinberg\'s \"Love Stories\" and couple satisfaction. 50 heterosexual couples, married or consensually living together, constituted the sample. Research specific objectives were: to identify \"Love Stories\" which were considered the most adequate to predict couple satisfaction; to verify if there were any similarities between men and women \"Love Stories\" and between those to which they either identify themselves or would like to reply on their own lives; to verify if there was any relationship between the wish of living a specific \"Love Story\" and the person\'s own \"real story\". Main findings were that the \"Love Stories\" of which the scripts were more socially adequate were those which were identified as having more positive prediction power, while those the scripts of which were socially inadequate according to the couples\' current cultural patterns were those which were considered as presenting negative prediction power for couple satisfaction. Couples presented similarities on relation to \"Love Stories\" they identify to with either more or less intensity and in average they were satisfied with the \"real living stories\" of their couple relationships.

Silva, Isabela Machado da January 2013 (has links)
This study investigated the development of the marital and the coparental relationships during the transition to parenthood, in couples who conceived trough assisted reproduction techniques. A collective longitudinal case study was carried out. Three couples answered individual semi-structured interviews during three moments: (a) pregnancy, (b) after baby’s third month, and (c) after baby’s first year. The data were submitted to a narrative analysis, which focused both the particularities of each couple and the similarities between them. It has been identified a process in which couples’ relationships became more differentiated and divided into marital and coparental relationships. It is proposed that in couples who conceive through assisted reproduction, the treatment should be considered as a milestone of coparenthood beginning. It is also highlighted the need to consider the couple’s history, their infertility and treatment experience, the relationships with their families of origin, and their family form to understand this relationship development process.

‘To Take Each Other’ : Bugis Practices of Gender, Sexuality and Marriage

Idrus, Nurul Ilmi, nurulilmiidrus@hotmail.com January 2003 (has links)
This thesis is an ethnography of Bugis marriage. It is concerned with aspects of gender, sexuality and marriage in a bilateral, highly competitive, hierarchical society. ¶ I examine the fundamental concept of siri’ in relation to gender socialisation, courtship, the importance of kinship and status in marriage, how sexuality is regulated between the sexes, sex within marriage, and the dynamics of marriage, divorce, and reconciliation. The analysis considers how Islam combines with local custom (adat) in everyday practices, and how Bugis cultural specificities are affected within the national ideology of contemporary Indonesia. ¶ This ethnography explores an interpretation of Bugis social and sexual experience through examination of the construction of gender identities and how they are manifested in marriage. The thesis explores the complementarity of gender for the Bugis. Despite the ideal of feminine passivity, I demonstrate that women exercise agency in a number of circumstances, including how they manage the sexuality of their husbands, defending siri’, the arrangement of marriage, remarrying, money management, divorce, and violent situations. I also examine the practices of illegal marriage (kawin liar) and illegal divorce (cerai liar) at local and personal levels. I analyse local and national debates on the legitimation of what is popularly known in Indonesia as ‘marriage based on religion’ (nikah secara agama) as part of the examination of Bugis marriage and marital relations. ¶ My thesis contributes to the understanding of Bugis notions of sexuality, gender and social location, and how these interact with siri’. I explore how and why violence occurs within marriage. I use a combination of informal interviews, participant observation and focus group discussions as well textual analysis of traditional manuscripts and incorporation of oral traditions.

Delatorre, Marina Zanella January 2015 (has links)
This study aimed to verify validity evidences for an instrument for assessment of marital conflict resolution strategies and to investigate the use of these strategies by couples living in Rio Grande do Sul. To achieve this objective, this study is divided in three papers. Paper I investigated validity evidences for the Conflict Resolution Behavior Questionnaire (CRBQ). Paper II verified conflict resolution strategies used by men and women, its association with sociodemographic and relationship variables, and identified conflict resolution profiles. Participants were 750 heterosexual couples, who lived in Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil and cohabited for, at least, six months. Paper I showed evidences that the Brazilian version of the instrument is valid for the assessment of conflict resolution strategies. Paper II indicated that marital conflict resolution was associated with religious practice, length of relationship and moment of the life cycle. Paper III identified four profiles: Avoider, Validator, Hostile and Volatile. The aspects that can promote constructive management of conflicts by spouses and the marital quality associated with each profile are discussed.
