Fighting with Reality: Considering Mark Johnson's Pragmatic Realism Through Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do Method

Miller, Alexander David 01 December 2015 (has links)
This dissertation considers the supportive and complementary relation between Mark Johnson’s embodied realism and Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do as a philosophical practice. In exploring this relationship, the emphasis on one’s embodiment condition and its relationship with metaphor and self-expression are the primary focus. First, this work involves providing an introduction to and an exploration of Johnson’s understanding of embodiment and his pragmatic realism with its foundation in metaphorical expression. Second, Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do serves as a kind of exemplification and possible case of effective metaphorical development founded upon a desire for metaphorical-based self-expression of a combat philosophy of embodiment. Third, an analysis of the convergence between the use of metaphor-based embodiment in Lee’s and Johnson’s philosophies is considered. In this respect, both views serve to promote communication and evolution of self-expression as a consequence of certain metaphors. In the final area of analysis, Peirce’s phenomenology offers an understanding of how Lee’s and Johnson’s metaphor-based embodiment provides a fuller context and awareness of the phenomena of embodiment.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation we present a reading about the art installation Invention by Mark Lewis, in the situational context of the 31st Bienal de São Paulo. In the present approach is the methodological-theoretical tool used is the discursive semiotics. The aim of this work is to investigate, through the art piece reading, the relational field and the effect of senses that contribute to its meaning and also to understand its contribution to the construction of speech that includes it – the exposition. An exchange is assumed – the exchange in which the effect of senses emerges from the interaction between the combination: text and context. Therefore, this study aims to demonstrate that the meaning of the object called artistic emerges from the relations built within its context, as well as the way it produces effect of senses that contributes to the construction of the curatorial discourse. Because of this significance, the present work focuses, thence, on the treatment of the discursivization of the plastic text – Invention – to thus achieve its significant developments and the iconization plastic text, and then collate the speeches, the work and exposure in order to identify the relationships semantic between them. Finally, in the process of countering the speeches, we try to demonstrate the syntactic-semantic relationship that emerges from the intersection between artwork and exposure to achieve the speech. We realized that the Invention work raises social paradigms, cultural and political inherent to contemporary condition, as perceived in curatorial discourse, besides acting as a manipulation tool this.

Johansson, Oskar, Olsson, Johan January 2018 (has links)
Today concrete is one of the most commonly used building materials and slab on ground is one of the most used foundation types. Problems with cracking are a common occurance for slabs and are probably caused by uneven drying. While drying, concrete shrinks depending on the moisture of surrounding environment. A slab on ground is exposed to different moisture levels on top and bottom of the slab, since the relative humidity of the soil is 100% while the indoor air is much drier. This means that the slab top will display more shrinkage than the slab bottom. This uneven drying leads to a strain gradient through the cross section of the slab, and if the tension exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete cracking occurs. In this study different variants of slab on ground have been simulated using FEM-Design with purpose to examine the effects of uneven drying on cracking. The slabs were square with sizes ranging from 5x5 m2 to 80x80 m2 , 100 mm or 200 mm thickness, with or without joints, free edge or pinned support and exposed to different kinds of drying and reinforcement alternatives. Slabs of one size have been simulated with varying modulus of subgrade reaction, boundary conditions and drying conditions to determine the effect of the modulus of subgrade reaction on cracking in concrete. Beyond this a concrete plank has been simulated in order to verify results from a previous study at the University of Gävle. A total of 1957 slabs were simulated. The results show that uneven drying of slabs on ground creates moment and, depending on boundary conditions and joints, axial loads as well. In many cases the resulting magnitudes of the reactions invoke cracking in the concrete. Conclusions in this study: Uneven drying creates moment and axial loads in slabs on ground. The addition of joints which allow independent subplate movement is an effective way of limiting crack width caused by axial loads. The magnitude of moment, axial loads and crack width for slabs smaller than 30x30 m2 depends on slab size. Slabs on ground ought to be reinforced in the top part of the cross section with respect to cracks from uneven drying. The simulations confirm the conclusion from the earlier study regarding deflections in the plank caused by uneven drying.
