Hendricks / Public parks can provide considerable value to the population that visit them, for the community around them and the local economy. A well designed public park can attract growth in tourism, stimulate a habitat for wildlife, contribute to personal health and wellness, improve the aesthetics of an area and stimulate economic growth. Managing and operating a public park entails many complex issues such as designing an attractive green space, implementing and maintaining the park, attracting and managing visitors and obtaining financial support. Public parks need to identify factors that influence park visitation in order to more effectively manage park visitorship.. This thesis examines park visitation analyzing data of park users of The High Line in New York City to develop a model to more accurately predict visitation. The thesis focuses on the critical social and climatic variables that attract visitors to spend time in the High Line park. Understanding these factors will allow park management the ability to create a strategic plan for managing a public space that best serves its visitors and the community. More specifically, a strategic plan helps to determine who the visitors are and what activities they enjoy in the park. In conceptualizing a solution, High Line can put into practice what its visitors want to see offered in the park and which of its programming needs improvement to attract more visitors. Meeting the needs of park visitors will create a better experience for the customers and a better management strategy for operations. A multivariate regression analysis was used to establish the relationship between High Line visitation and the climatic and social variables. The climatic variables of daily average temperature and precipitation. The social variables of day of the week and season of the year were added to the structural model as dummies. A time trend variable characterized as time in years was added to the model to show any yearly change in visitation to the park. This method has been widely applied to a number of studies testing the relationship of climatic and social variables to park visitation (Micah, Scotter and Fenech 2016). The results of this regression analysis show that the social variables of day of the week and season and the climatic variables of average temperature and precipitation had a significant affect on park visitation. The model developed can be used to forecast park visitation, quantifying the many variables that influence park visitation.

Stadsdelen Väster i Lund har dålig tillgång till grönytor och en tydlig avsaknad av ett ordentligt stadsdelscentrum. Här finns dock stadens gamla Folkets park med potential att bli en grön mötesplats. Syftet med detta arbete är att göra en analys av Folkparkens potential och se till hur parken skulle kunna bli en mer attraktiv och funktionell samlingspunkt. Delvis baseras arbetet på empiriskt material i form av observationer och en enkätundersökning för att få fram vad Folkparkens besökare har för vanor och önskningar för området delvis baseras arbetet på kommunala dokument, tidigare inlämnade förslag, en jämförelse med andra fungerande parker och tidigare gjorda arbeten som berör planering av stadsrum vars teorier jag applicerat i mitt arbete. Resultatet av mitt arbete är utformat som en sammanfattning av inhämtat underlag, vilken jag sedan baserar min diskussion på. I rekommendationerna utelämnas folkparkshuset eftersom jag tror att kommunen i dagsläget inte vill finansiera den ombyggnad som krävs för att få in någon verksamhet i huset. I stället föreslår jag att öka just parkens attraktivitet för att på så vis öka intresset för att investera i huset.

Understanding what variables influence park use would assist park providers and
policy makers in acquiring, designing, managing, and funding initiatives which
encourage or support park use.
Previous studies indicate that access to parks (measured by both objective and
perceived distances), park appeal in terms of being well-maintained, and effective
communication between constituents and park suppliers, relate positively to park use.
This study explores the relationships between access, appeal, and communication
and park use. Access is operationalized as four objective distances from household to
nearest park using both Euclidian and Network measures, and by subjective self-reported
measures of ability to access parks on foot or by bicycle. Appeal is concerned with the
influence of parks’ perceived level of maintenance and availability of amenities on the
probability of park use. Effective communication is operationalized by three variables:
perceptions of being well-informed, being included in the planning process, and being
able to give feedback to park leaders. These variables and selected demographic data
were extracted from an existing data set: the City of College Station Needs Assessment. Findings indicated that a) respondents with access to parks are more likely to use parks,
b) level of maintenance and available amenities influenced use, and c) respondents who
are well-informed are more likely to use parks.

Factors affecting the cleanness of men¡¦s toilets in Kaohsiung City parks.Lin, Chia-hung 14 January 2005 (has links)
The cleanness of toilets in parks is an important aspect of the quality of public leisure and health. It is also closely related to the image of the community where the park is located. However, many parks are still regarded as dirty by the public. This study is aimed to find out what are the factors affecting the cleanness of men¡¦s toilets in parks, with Kaohsiung City as the area of study.
Both interviews and ratings were used to look for the factors. The interviews were given to samples from five populations: (1) government officers who are in charge of park toilets, (2) cleaning companies that are commissioned to keep the toilets clean, (3) janitors who are responsible for the cleaning, (4) scholars who have studied the cleaning problems of public toilets, and (5) users of public toilets. Based on results from the interviews, photos were taken for eight factors (e.g., outside appearance, floor) of 38 toilets. A sample of ten users then rated these photos in terms of the cleanness they represented. The ratings given to the photos for each toilet were then summed to give a rating for the overall cleanness of each toilet. The interrater reliability of these ratings, as measured by Cronbach¡¦s alpha, was .98.
Results showed that compared with other six factors, the outside appearance and walls of a toilet were the most important factors for discriminating clean toilets from dirty ones¡Xfrom the users¡¦ perspective. Within all eight factors, conditions ¡§whether the plumbing is hidden¡¨, ¡§size of wall tiles¡¨ and ¡§wetness of floor¡¨ affected the users¡¦ rating most. The users¡¦ ratings were, however, unrelated to the government¡¦s past ratings for the toilets (r = .02, p = .92).
Based on the interview findings and ratings, I proposed that the city government might try to improve the conditions of park toilets by taking several measures. For example, the procedures for recruiting janitors and evaluating their performance should be revised, and prompts (such as signs urging users¡¦ to keep clean) should be changed more often.

This dissertation considers the exchanges between national parks along the North American borderlands that defined the contours of development and wilderness and created a brand new category of protected space -- the transboundary park. The National Park Systems of Canada, Mexico, and the United States did not develop and grow in isolation. "Bordering North America" examines four different parks in two regions: Waterton Lakes and Glacier in the northern Rocky Mountains of Alberta and Montana and Big Bend and the Maderas del Carmen in the Chihuahuan Desert of Texas and Coahuila. In 1932, Glacier and Waterton Lakes were combined to form the first transboundary park. In the 1930s and 1940s, using the Waterton-Glacier model as precedent, the U.S. and Mexican governments undertook a major effort, ultimately unsuccessful, to designate a sister park in Mexico and combine the two areas into another international space. Finally, in 1994, Mexico established two protected areas, including the Maderas del Carmen, adjacent to the Big Bend. Ideas about parks and wilderness migrated across borders just as freely as the flora and fauna these spaces sought to protect. Moreover, a multiplicity of views and forces, from three different Park Services, the visiting public, private enterprise, local landholders, competing government agencies and international NGOs, and even the elements of nature itself, all combined to shape the trajectory of park development. / text
