[en] PRIVATIZATION AND LIQUIDATION OF STATE-OWNED BANKS: IMPACTS OVER COMPETITIVENESS IN THE BRAZILIAN CREDIT MARKET / [pt] PRIVATIZAÇÕES E LIQUIDAÇÕES DE BANCOS OFICIAIS: IMPACTOS SOBRE ACOMPETITIVIDADE DO MERCADO DE CRÉDITO BRASILEIRO

DANIEL FERREIRA LIMA 01 September 2005 (has links)
[en] A common argument against privatizations of state-owned banks is that it leads to larger interest rates, through the riddance of competitive pressure over private banks. This paper demonstrates that state- owned banks also can prevent a high competition between private-owned banks. The impact of privatizations over oligopolistic credit markets is, therefore, an empirical question. In order to answer this question, we studied the 20 Brazilian banks privatizations during the second half of 90`s using stock returns. We could not identify negative changes in value for the most leveraged public firms. Furthermore, while only one large Brazilian private bank (Banco Real) benefited from the privatizations, other private banks lost market value. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that privatizations lower spreads by fostering competition in the credit markets.

Strategies in Outsourcing R&D Processes to Maintain Market Competitiveness

Yerkic-Husejnovic, Berina 01 January 2017 (has links)
In the 21st century, managing outsourced research and development (R&D) processes is critical to an organization's success. Guided by the logistic outsourcing theory developed by de Boer, Gaytan, and Arroyo, the purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies and processes organizational leaders used to manage outsourced R&D to maintain market competitiveness. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 5 purposefully selected business leaders who were responsible for outsourcing R&D in a single Fortune 500 corporation in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Company records were also gathered as data. Yin's 5-step process for a case study and key words in context analysis were used to analyze the data. Findings included 3 main themes: (a) the outsourcing decision-making process with internal and external constraints, (b) the effectiveness of managing outsourcing services and processes, and (c) the influence of outsourcing on business effectiveness and new products. Findings also indicated no practical system to measure effectiveness of outsourced R&D services on market competitiveness. The lack of measurement effectiveness was due to a lack of processes in place to measure R&D performance and no practical approach to measure impact of R&D on market competitiveness. Findings offered insight into strategies used by business leaders to manage outsourced R&D processes. Findings may also have implications for positive social change such as impacting communities through employment, generating government revenues through taxes, and creating a positive impact on job creation in the industries that promote R&D outsourcing.

The contribution of innovation capabilities to business performance in state owned enterprises in South Africa

Marweshe, Sefako Isaiah 04 1900 (has links)
PhD. (Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences), Vaal University of Technology. / State owned enterprises (SOEs) form one of the largest sectors within the economy in many countries and are important contributors to national development. They globally make up a greater part of the national gross domestic product (GDP). However, the performance of most SOEs in developing countries, such as South Africa, is substandard, prompting practitioners and researchers to continue searching for lasting solutions. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of innovation capabilities to market and business performance in SOEs in South Africa. The study followed a quantitative survey research method. A self-completion questionnaire was distributed to a purposive sample of 278 professional employees and managers in a selected South African SOE who were based in three provinces, namely, Gauteng, North-West and the Free State provinces. The collected data were analysed using the Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 25.0) and Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS version 25.0). The techniques used to analyse the data include descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, and structural equation modelling to test the hypotheses. Out of the seven hypotheses tested in this study, six were accepted. Innovative strategy, market innovation and technological innovation all significantly predicted market competitiveness. Market competitiveness significantly predicted three business performance dimensions, namely, environmental, financial, and operational. The study proposes a unique model for managing the contribution of innovation capabilities to business performance in SOEs in South Africa. Theoretically, the study contributes to the existing body of knowledge since it is an addition to the available literature on innovation capabilities and performance of SOEs. Practically, in the study for the optimisation of market competitiveness and business performance, in SOEs, emphasis should be placed on understanding and considering the appropriate innovation capabilities as input factors.
