Inbreeding can have profound negative effects on individuals by reducing fertility and viability. In populations, inbreeding depression can reduce growth rates and increases extinction risk. The aims of this thesis are to investigate inbreeding depression in male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) and to study the evolution of mechanisms for inbreeding avoidance in females, using guppies from a feral population in Queensland, Australia. Male guppies are highly polymorphic in their sexual ornamentation, indeed they show one of the most extreme polymorphisms observed in nature. Female guppies exhibit complex mate choice based on preferences for ornamentation, as well as social context. I aim is to examine how these factors of inbreeding avoidance alter sexual selection. In male guppies I found strong inbreeding depression in male sperm numbers, which is amplified under semi-natural compared to laboratory conditions (Chapter 2). Moreover, inbreeding depression results in low fertility under sperm competition: an experiment using artificial insemination techniques reveals that highly inbred males are heavily disadvantaged in gaining paternity (Chapter 3). On population level, inbreeding depression is manifest in reduced growth rates, predominantly in the early stages of inbreeding (Chapter 4). Population growth at inbreeding coefficients f=0.375-0.59 did not seem to lead to inbreeding depression, whereas lower levels of inbreeding reduced population growth. Although the growth rates in inbred populations appear normal, severe inbreeding depression is uncovered after outbred immigrants are added. Specifically, male immigrants are most efficient in short-term genetic rescue, probably due to insemination of large numbers of females whereas females are limited in the number of eggs they can produce (Chapter 4). Male ornamental traits show significant inbreeding depression in semi-natural conditions only (Chapters 2 & 3). Inbreeding avoidance mechanisms seem to have evolved in females: they prefer courtship displays of non-inbred males (Chapter 2), unfamiliar males (Chapter 5) and males with rare patterns (Chapter 6). This preference might increase the mating success of immigrants, and may have evolved to facilitate the avoidance of inbreeding. Together with context-independent preferences for ornament combinations (Chapter 6), it also offers an explanation for the maintenance of polymorphism in this species.

The artificially scented ape : investigating the role of fragrances and body odours in human interactionsAllen, Caroline January 2015 (has links)
It was long believed that humans were unable to utilise the odours of conspecifics to co-ordinate social interactions in ways in which other species appear to be capable. However, a surge in interest in human social olfaction has recently challenged this view. The numerous studies conducted in this area have found that multiple state and trait related cues can be detected in body odour. Furthermore, many studies indicate that women are often more sensitive to these cues, and that sensitivity can be associated with fertility, findings that are consistent with sex differences in reproductive effort and benefits of choosiness in mate-searching. Since previous studies in this area have usually addressed the potential for humans to use olfactory communication in a comparable manner to other mammals, they typically involve collection and assessment of ‘natural’ odour. That is, they explicitly exclude the possibility of ‘contamination’ of odour samples by artificial fragrances. However, humans have used artificial fragrances for millennia, across many different cultures. This raises the question of whether widespread fragrance use may affect or disrupt the detection of this information in modern humans. The first aim of this thesis was to address this question by investigating how fragrance use may mediate the detection of olfactory information in humans. As well as providing further evidence for sex differences in the assessment of olfactory cues, and for the role of olfaction in real world partner choice, the findings herein suggest that fragrance may act differently on different information being assessed, potentially masking accurate assessment of certain traits (such as masculinity), while fragrance choice and preferences may be important in complementing other olfactory information (such as the general distinguishability of an individuals’ odour profile). A second aim of the thesis was to develop a scale in order to more accurately describe the varying perceptual qualities of human body odour – in other words to map human body odours. This work was conducted alongside perfumers in order to benefit from their expertise in olfactory perception and semantic labelling of odours. The development of such a scale could enable improved understanding of the perceptual qualities of human odour, making it possible to link specific perceptual qualities to specific cues (e.g. symmetry, masculinity, sex) or to manipulate odours based on perceptual qualities in experimental settings, and has direct practical implications for fragrance designers and for improving the ability of individuals to choose fragrance products that suit their odour profile. The second section of the thesis focuses on the effects of odours on the individual wearer as well as on perceivers in the environment. One study is presented which investigates the role of malodour reduction compared to the addition of fragrances in perceptions of confidence and attractiveness, finding that both the reduction of malodour and the addition of fragrance appear to be important for confidence as rated by others in the environment. The final study presented in the thesis examines a hitherto un-investigated role of olfaction during human pregnancy. The rationale for the study is based on evidence suggesting that in certain non-human species, which also show bi-parental care of offspring, there may be a role for chemical, or odour based, communication which underpins behavioural and endocrinological changes related to infant care behaviours in males. The study found little evidence to support the presence of analogous olfactory signalling during human pregnancy, though the findings are discussed in light of methodological changes which, if made in future studies, may result in different outcomes. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the importance of continuing to investigate various forms of olfactory communication, as well as improving our understanding of odours through the mapping of their perceptual qualities, and finally further examining the ways in which various fragranced products, which are widely used in society, may affect all of this. Future directions for this area of research are discussed. This line of investigation will, I argue, enable us to finally establish the true role of olfaction in contemporary social environments.

Abstract
Sexual ornaments have developed in a very wide variety of animal taxa to increase fitness by improving mating success. How increased mating rate improves fitness is obvious in the case of most males: each mating provides more offspring. Whether more matings benefit females, whose fecundity is limited by resources and not mates, is unclear. Mate choice is linked to ornamentation, when individuals of one sex choose who to mate with based on the ornamentation in members of the other sex. Ornaments may work as a basis for mate choice due to conveying information about the quality of the mate. Mate choice may then lead to intrasexual competition for mates in the chosen sex as animals try to outcompete their neighbours and attract more mates.
My aim in this thesis is to study the purpose and costs of female ornamentation as well as female competition for males. The main questions revolve around understanding what information female ornaments provide about the bearer and how males choose between females. I also examine how females compete against each other and what the costs of being ornamented are for a female. To study these questions I use the common glow-worm (Lampyris noctiluca Linnaeus, Lampyridae), whose females glow at night to attract flying males.
According to my results, a female’s glowing provides accurate information about fecundity and males base their choice of mate on the intensity of female glowing. I showed that the perceived strength of an ornament in comparison to others close by is more important than the actual strength of an ornament. In the glow-worm, the perceived strength of an ornament depends on distance to the observer, making the system open to exploitation. A mathematical model I developed suggested that dull females could outcompete brighter ones by choosing optimal locations, and experimentation showed this to be the case. Finally, my results show that glow-worm females lose eggs each day they remain unmated. This suggests that the evolution of female ornamentation may have been driven in part by the need to find a mate as soon as possible after eclosion. Which in turn means that female and male ornamentation may have fundamentally different purposes: for females mating soon may be important, where for males the total number of offspring fertilized is critical. / Tiivistelmä
Seksuaalisia ornamentteja on kehittynyt hyvin laajaan kirjoon eläinlajeja parantamaan yksilöiden kelpoisuutta nostamalla niiden parittelutodennäköisyyttä. Koirailla parittelutodennäköisyyden ja kelpoisuuden välinen yhteys on yleensä selvä: jokainen parittelu nostaa jälkeläismäärää. Naarailla yhteys ei ole yhtä selvä, sillä niillä jälkeläismäärä yleensä riippuu resurssien saatavuudesta eikä kumppanien määrästä. Parinvalinta on kiinteästi yhteydessä ornamentaatioon: Yhden sukupuolen yksilöt päättävät kenen kanssa paritella toisen sukupuolen yksilöiden ornamenttien laadun perusteella. Ornamentit toimivat valinnan perusteena välittämällä tietoa parin laadusta. Parinvalinta voi johtaa yksilöiden väliseen kilpailuun kumppaneista valitun sukupuolen sisällä.
Tässä väitöskirjassa tarkoituksenani on tutkia naaraiden ornamenttien tarkoitusta ja kustannuksia sekä tutkia miten naaraat voivat kilpailla toisiaan vastaan koiraista. Pääkysymykset liittyvät ornamenttien välittämään informaatioon ja siihen miten koiraat valitsevat kumppaninsa. Lisäksi tarkastelen miten naaraat voivat kilpailla keskenään ja mitä kustannuksia ornamenteista on naaraille. Kysymysten selvittämiseksi käytän tutkimuslajina kiiltomatoa (Lampyris noctiluca Linnaeus, Lampyridae), lajia jonka naaraat loistavat öisin houkutellakseen lentäviä koiraita.
Tulosteni mukaan kiiltomatonaaraan loiste välittää tarkkaa informaatiota niiden munamäärästä ja koiraat osaavat valita parinsa tämän perusteella. Osoitin, että ornamentin havaittu vahvuus verrattuna ympärillä oleviin on tärkeämpää kuin ornamentin todellinen vahvuus. Kiiltomadolla havaittu kirkkaus riippuu etäisyydestä havaitsijaan, mikä tekee signallointijärjestelmästä avoimen väärinkäytölle. Laatimani matemaattisen mallin mukaan himmeät naaraat voisivat päihittää kilpailussa kirkkaampia valitsemalla parempia loistamispaikkoja. Käytännön kokeet osoittivat tämän pitävän paikkansa. Viimeinen tulokseni oli, että kiiltomadolla naaras menettää osan munistaan joka päivä jonka se joutuu odottamaan parittelua. Tästä voi päätellä, että naaraan ornamentin evoluutiota on voinut osaltaan ajaa tarve paritella mahdollisimman pian aikuistumisen jälkeen. Naaraiden ja koiraiden ornamenttien syyt voivat olla hyvin erilaiset: naarailla parittelu mahdollisimman pian voi olla tärkeintä, kun koiraalla parittelukumppanien määrä on tärkein.

Results of previous studies testing the influence of oral contraceptives on relationship satisfaction have produced mixed results. These discrepancies might be explained by the "Congruency hypothesis", which predicts that relationship satisfaction is determined by the congruency (or non-congruency) between current use of oral contraceptives and their use during relationship formation. This is because oral contraceptives appear to alter women's mate preferences, so that attraction to their partner may have changed in non-congruent women. Indeed, previous studies have shown that women in a non-congruent state were less sexually satisfied with their partner, even though they were more generally satisfied in the non- sexual aspects of the relationship. The aim of our study was to test the congruency hypothesis on two groups of couples (couples attending the Center of Assisted Reproduction, and a comparison group of pregnant women and their partners; note that in neither group were women currently using oral contraception). Based on previous studies, we expected that women who used oral contraceptives at the time of relationship formation would report lower sexual satisfaction with their partner than women who were non-users during relationship formation. Cada indivíduo concentra suas atividades em torno de uma toca, com as fêmeas possuindo os dois quelípodo de mesmo tamanho, enquanto os machos possuem um dos quelípodo hipertrofiado, usados como armas durante interações agressivas para proteção do território ou durante a corte em um movimento característico de display, sendo excelentes modelos para estudos de competição e seleção sexual. Além disso, a escavação do solo para construção de suas tocas acarreta na maior oxigenação do mesmo, altera as condições de drenagem, distribuição de partículas, disponibilidade de matérias orgânicas e nutrientes, sendo assim considerados engenheiros do ecossistema. Portanto, alterações nos manguezais que influenciam na distribuição desse grupo de caranguejos podem intensificar potenciais impactos nessas regiões. A presente tese de doutorado foi dividida em três capítulos. O estudo do capítulo 1 foi realizado em manguezais do litoral centro/sul do Estado de São Paulo, onde investigamos o efeito do sombreamento na distribuição espacial, comportamento e fisiologia de duas espécies de caranguejos-chama-marés: Leptuca leptodactyla e Leptuca urugayensis. Já o estudo do capítulo 2 foi concretizado durante período de doutorado sanduíche no exterior, realizado na Austrália. Nele, examinamos o efeito da migração de espécies de áreas adjacentes (Tubuca elegans e Tubuca signata), relacionados à elevação do nível do mar, sobre o comportamento social e reprodutivo de outra espécie desse grupo de caranguejos, Austruca mjoebergi. Ainda durante o período de doutorado sanduíche, realizei o estudo do capítulo 3 com ênfase em seleção sexual de caranguejos-chama-maré (Austruca mjoebergi), mais relacionado à linha de pesquisa da minha orientadora no exterior, onde examinamos a precisão e o tempo de escolha das fêmeas em relação à velocidade, quantidade e complexidade dos displays dos machos. / Fiddler crabs are semi-terrestrial and social species that inhabit open beaches margin, mangroves and salt marshes, both in tropical and temperate zones. Each individual concentrates its activities in their territory surrounding a burrow, with females possessing both chelipodes of the same size, while males have one of them hypertrophied, used as weapons during aggressive interactions to protect the territory or during waving displays to attract females, being excellent models for studies of competition and sexual selection. In addition, the excavation of the soil for the construction of its burrows leads to increased oxygenation, changes in drainage conditions, particle distribution, availability of organic matter and nutrients, being considered thus ecosystem engineers. Therefore, alterations in mangroves that influence the distribution of this group of crabs may intensify potential impacts into these regions. The present PhD thesis was divided into three chapters. The study of chapter 1 was carried out in mangroves of the central / southern coast of the state of São Paulo, where we investigated the shading effect on the spatial distribution, behavior and physiology of two species of fiddler crabs: Leptuca leptodactyla and Leptuca urugayensis. The study of chapter 2 was made during a doctorate period sandwich abroad, held in Australia. We examined the effect of the migration of species of adjacent areas (Tubuca elegans and Tubuca signata), related to the elevation of sea level, on the social and reproductive behavior of another species of this group of crabs, Austruca mjoebergi. The proposed thesis is comprised of eleven papers connected by the employment of the evolutionary psychological approach in research on various aspects of human sexuality. The aim of the first monothematic part is to demonstrate the evolutionary-psychological approach to one recent phenomenon in female sexuality - the use of oral contraceptives (OC). OC use has been shown to suppress psychological mechanisms that are considered to be adaptive in the fertile period of the natural menstrual cycle. In particular, OC users' ratings of male stimuli that provide the cues of genetic quality and compatibility are lower in comparison with normally cycling women. Moreover, the increase in sexual desire and in the prevalence of proceptive behaviour observed during mid-cycle in normally cycling women is diminished. However, the impact of this phenomenon on mate-choice and relationship dynamics in an ecological context has not been studied. In the first study, we have analyzed the data of Czech women obtained via representative sampling within the Czech National Survey of Sexual Behavior. Results indicated that normally cycling women had a significantly higher number of one-night stands during the last year in comparison to OC users even when living in a long-term relationship. Les traits ornementaux sont classiquement vus comme un attribut des mâles chez les espèces animales. Cette vision est liée à un rôle considéré historiquement comme très asymétrique des sexes, avec les mâles qui entrent en compétition (sélection intra-sexuelle) pour attirer les femelles qui choisissent (sélection intersexuelle) le meilleur partenaire. Cette idée fut développée en liaison avec l’asymétrie dans la production des gamètes mâles et femelles. Les femelles, qui produisent un nombre réduit de gamètes de grosse taille, maximisent la chance de survie de leurs descendants en investissant plus dans les soins parentaux ; elles deviennent ainsi le sexe limitant et choisissent les mâles qui entrent donc en compétition pour avoir accès à la reproduction. Tout trait ornemental qui augmente le succès d’appariement sera donc avantageux pour les mâles conduisant à des traits sexuels secondaires plus développés chez ce sexe. Si les traits ornementaux sont fréquents chez les mâles, il existe également de nombreux exemples chez les femelles, notamment chez les espèces socialement monogames à soins biparentaux. C’est seulement récemment que les biologistes évolutifs ont cherché à tester les processus expliquant l’apparition et le maintien des ornements femelles. Si le rôle de la corrélation génétique dans cette évolution est incontestable, et que la sélection sociale est aussi majeure, plusieurs études empiriques ont montré un choix mâle pour les ornements femelles et des modèles théoriques ont déterminé les paramètres conduisant à l’évolution du choix mâle. Par ailleurs, les approches phylogénétiques retraçant l’évolution des ornements ont montré une forte labilité des traits femelles, avec des apparitions et disparitions de traits ornementaux plus fréquentes chez les femelles que chez les mâles. Afin de mieux comprendre la relation entre la sélection sexuelle et l’évolution des ornements femelles, cette thèse s’est construite sur ces résultats précédemment acquis et a mené plusieurs approches pour mieux préciser le rôle de la sélection sexuelle dans l’évolution et le maintien de la coloration chez les femelles. Une approche comparative à l’échelle des passereaux a testé les paramètres déterminés comme conduisant à l’évolution du choix mâle par des modèles théoriques. En accord avec les modèles théoriques, les résultats mettent en avant l’importance de l’investissement du mâle dans les soins parentaux dans l’évolution de la coloration du plumage femelle. Ils montrent également comment l’investissement initial des femelles dans la reproduction limite l’évolution de la coloration femelle. Un autre axe de la thèse s’est focalisé sur la coloration chez une espèce monogame, la Mésange bleue Cyanistes caeruleus, en utilisant un vaste jeu de données à long terme avec10 ans de donnés dans quatre populations pour tester notamment(i) la force de la corrélation génétique, (ii) les liens entre indices de succès de reproduction et coloration et (iii) l’existence d’un appariement par homogamie chez cette espèce. Si les résultats principaux montrent une forte corrélation génétique et soulignent une très forte variation spatiotemporelle, l’application d’outils méta-analytiques a permis de déceler une relation entre les colorations des femelles et les indices de succès de reproduction ainsi qu’un patron faible mais positif d’appariement par homogamie pour les deux patchs étudiés (couronne et bavette). Les deux volets de la thèse représentent de nouveaux apports en faveur de l’évolution des ornements femelles. Ils soulignent la complexité associée à leur évolution et l’importance de prendre en compte la variation spatiotemporelle pour une compréhension étendue et une possibilité de généralisation. / Ornamental traits are classically associated with males in animal species. The asymmetrical view is related to sex roles, in which males are competing (intra-sexual selection) to attract females which chose the best mate (intersexual selection). This idea was developed with the concept of anisogamy, the asymmetry in the production of male and female gametes. Females producing few but large gametes maximize their offspring survival rate by investing more in parental care; they become the limiting sex and chose males which are thus competing for access to reproduction. Then, any ornamental trait increasing pairing success would become advantageous for males, leading to more developed secondary sexual traits in this sex. If ornamental traits are more frequent in males, there are also many examples with females, especially in socially monogamous species with biparental care. Evolutionary biologists have only started recently to test processes explaining the outbreak and maintenance of female ornaments. Genetic correlation is an unquestionable process involved in this evolution, and social selection is also a major process. Several empirical studies have also related male mate choice to female ornaments and theoretical models have defined key parameters driving the evolution of male mate choice. Furthermore, phylogenetical studies retracing the evolution of ornaments have showed a high lability in female traits, with more frequent gains and losses of ornamental traits in females compared to males. In order to link sexual selection to the evolution of female ornaments, this thesis was based on these previous achievements to develop different approaches to better understand the role of sexual selection in the evolution and maintenance of female colouration. Comparative methods in songbirds tested the key parameters defined by theoretical models as driving the evolution of male mate choice. In line with theoretical models, results highlight the importance of male investment in parental care in the evolution of female plumage colouration. They also show how female initial investment in reproduction limits this evolution. Another thesis axis focused on colouration in a monogamous species, the Blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus, using a large dataset across 10 years in four populations and tested in particular (i) the strength of genetic correlation, (ii) relations between proxies of reproductive success and colouration and (iii) the existence of assortative mating in this species. The main results highlight a strong genetic correlation and a wide spatiotemporal variation and the use of meta-analyses revealed correlation between female colouration and proxies of reproductive success as well as a weak but positive pattern of assortative mating on the two measured patches (crown and chest). Both sides of the thesis represent new insights in favour of the evolution of female ornaments. They also highlight the complexity associated with their evolution and the importance of considering spatiotemporal variation for extensive understanding and generalisation.

Výskyt a role UV reflektantního zbarvení u listorohých brouků (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) / The distribution and role of UV reflectant patterns in Scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)Vlach, Jan January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis is focused on the distribution and role of UV reflectant patterns in beetles (Coleoptera) with focus on the family Scarabaeidae. Through a survey of European museum collections, we discovered over 900 species of UV reflectant beetles, of which 850 species were identified as UV reflectant for the first time. The surface structures responsible for UV reflectant patterns in beetles were studied in detail using a scanning electron microscope. We have identified two ways how the UV reflectant patterns occur. The first way: the light rays interact with the internal structure of the cuticular formations or the cuticle itself; the second way: the light rays interact with the surface layer formed by cuticular secretion. Additionally we carried out experiments with live animals, where we investigated the effect of an individual's age on the intensity of UV reflectant patterns and the effect of UV reflectance on reproductive activity. In a pilot study we were able to show that freshly hatched individuals show a higher level of UV reflectance than older individuals.
