Ensuring high-quality production during commissioning and ramp-up : A case study at Northvolt

Eklund, Henrik, Engström, Jacob January 2021 (has links)
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have generated a shift in the automotive industry towards electric vehicles (EVs) instead of vehicles powered by fossil fuels. As a result, the demand for LIBs is only expected to grow in the future due to an increased demand for passenger EVs. Consequently, LIB manufacturers have to increase their production to meet the increasing demand. Northvolt is a Swedish LIB manufacturer founded in 2016, aiming to start the production of LIBs at the Northvolt Ett factory in Skellefteå during 2021. The Northvolt Ett factory will be one of the largest battery plants in Europe, supplying battery cells for both commercial and domestic use. Poorly manufactured battery cells can potentially cause hazardous events, such as fires or explosions, further supporting the need for high quality batteries. Consequently, requirements from customers and industry standards are high in terms of product quality control through e.g. measurement system analysis (MSA), statistical process control (SPC), and capability analysis. Furthermore, previous research has highlighted issues during commissioning and ramp-up of production, potentially occurring at Northvolt Ett.  The purpose of this study has been to describe how high-quality production can be ensured and maintained during and after commissioning. The study has been conducted as a qualitative case study at Northvolt Ett, focusing on qualification of the coating process. The basis for the study was to examine previous research on quality assurance from other industries, analyze automotive standards, and gather learnings from the pilot production at Northvolt Labs in Västerås. Unstructured interviews were conducted with Northvolt staff to understand what had previously been done related to quality assurance for Coating.  The learnings from Northvolt Labs highlighted a clear focus on preventive actions, such as establishing a Design-FMEA, Process-FMEA, and a Control Plan for the coating process. However, room for improvement was identified in terms of process improvement and control, since the lack of SPC has yielded unreliable results from the performed capability analysis. In addition, previous research has shown that preventive actions should be combined with actions for process improvement to reach full-scale production quickly. Thus, recommendations have been made for Northvolt to implement a clear strategy for product qualification through SPC and capability analysis, as a complement to the preventive actions. The recommendations include specific propositions for validation of the coating process and a general framework for process validation through MSA, SPC, and capability analysis. The presented recommendations can help Northvolt perform successful commissioning of the processes at Northvolt Ett and can also be useful for process validation in other manufacturing industries.

Heller, Katja 23 July 2012 (has links)
The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of runoff processes on slopes based on the spatial distribution of periglacial cover beds. The study area is a 6 ha large forested spring catchment in the Eastern Ore Mountains, Saxony. Bedrock is gneiss overlain by periglacial cover beds comprising two or three layers. On plot, hillslope and small-catchment scales hydrometrical, hydrochemical and geoelectrical methods as well as tracer experiments are used to determine the constitutive runoff processes. From the synthesis of partial results, three pre-moisture controlled process cycles are derived. With low pre-moisture, saturation overland flow dominates in the spring bog. In contrast, with medium or high pre-moisture interflow occurs. Besides, with rising pre-moisture runoff coefficients increase in a non-linear manner. It is emphasised that the hydraulic anisotropic structure of the Basal Layer is the major control factor for subsurface water-flow paths. On the one hand, this layer acts as an aquitard for seeping water because of its high bulk density. On the other hand, water within the layer is able to flow laterally because of the sandy texture and the coarse clasts oriented parallel to the slope. These findings highlight the importance of relic periglacial cover beds for runoff generation in subdued mountains.

Identification and characterization of molecular modulators of methylmercury-induced toxicity and dopamine neuron degeneration in Caenorhabditis elegans

VanDuyn, Natalia M. January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Methylmercury (MeHg) exposure from occupational, environmental and food sources is a significant threat to public health. MeHg poisonings in adults may result in severe psychological and neurological deficits, and in utero exposures can confer significant damage to the developing brain and impair neurobehavioral and intellectual development. Recent epidemiological and vertebrate studies suggest that MeHg exposure may contribute to dopamine (DA) neuron vulnerability and the propensity to develop Parkinson’s disease (PD). I have developed a novel Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) model of MeHg toxicity and have shown that low, chronic exposure confers embryonic defects, developmental delays, reduction in brood size, decreased animal viability and DA neuron degeneration. Toxicant exposure results in an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the robust induction of several glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) that are largely dependent on the PD-associated phase II antioxidant transcription factor SKN-1/Nrf2. I have also shown that SKN-1 is expressed in the DA neurons, and a reduction in SKN-1 gene expression increases MeHg-induced animal vulnerability and DA neuron degeneration. Furthermore, I incorporated a novel genome wide reverse genetic screen that identified 92 genes involved in inhibiting MeHg-induced animal death. The putative multidrug resistance protein MRP-7 was identified in the screen. I have shown that this transporter is likely expressed in DA neurons, and reduced gene expression increases cellular Hg accumulation and MeHg-associated DA neurodegeneration. My studies indicate that C. elegans is a useful genetic model to explore the molecular basis of MeHg-associated DA neurodegeneration, and may identify novel therapeutic targets to address this highly relevant health issue.

Psychosocial aspects of chronic pain in a clinical pediatric sample

Miller, Megan M. 04 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Chronic pain, defined as pain lasting more than 3 months, is a common and costly health condition. Thirty-three percent of adults and upwards of 35% of children report experiencing pain due to various diseases, disorders, or accidents. Recent research has identified perceived injustice and anger as important constructs in an adult’s pain experience and a possible focus for intervention efforts. The present study explored the extent to which perceived injustice and anger expression operate similarly in children with chronic pain as in adults. This was a retrospective analysis of data from 122 patients seeking treatment at a pediatric pain clinic. Results supported anger expression as a mediator in the relationship between perceived injustice and pain intensity but not psychological distress, suggesting that anger expression operates similarly in children as in adults with chronic pain. Unlike previous findings in adults with chronic pain, injustice did not moderate the relationship between pain intensity and psychological distress, suggesting that injustice operates differently in children with chronic pain compared to adults. The strong association between injustice and pain outcomes (i.e. pain intensity, quality of life, functional disability) suggests that injustice is an important construct to explore in the chronic pain experience of children.

Posouzení ekonomického rizika investora při realizaci investičního projektu / Valuation of Economic Risk of Investor in Realization of Investment Project

Rusínová, Alena January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is focused on assessing the economic risk for the investor in the implementation of the investment project. An investor's decision on the implementation of the project depends on the economic feasibility analysis identified outputs, these outputs are burdened by economic uncertainty, which raises the risk. Therefore, it is necessary to manage risk. The process of risk management consists of a phase of risk analysis and risk management phase. In the analysis phase is to identify risks, assessments of materiality and risk measurement. In the phase of risk management risks identified evaluate and establish measures to prevent their occurrence or impact.
