Assessment of software measurement

Berry, Michael, CSE, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
Background and purpose. This thesis documents a program of five studies concerned with the assessment of software measurement. The goal of this program is to assist the software industry to improve the information support for managers, analysts and software engineers by providing evidence of where opportunities for improving measurement and analysis exist. Methods. The first study examined the assessment of software measurement frameworks using models of best practice based on performance/success factors. The software measurement frameworks of thirteen organisations were surveyed. The association between a factor and the outcome experienced with the organisations' frameworks was then evaluated. The subsequent studies were more info-centric and investigated using models of information quality to assess the support provided for software processes. For these studies, information quality models targeting specific software processes were developed using practitioner focus groups. The models were instantiated in survey instruments and the responses were analysed to identify opportunities to improve the information support provided. The final study compared the use of two different information quality models for the assessing and improving information support. Assessments of the same quantum of information were made using a targeted model and a generic model. The assessments were then evaluated by an expert panel in order to identify which information quality model was more effective for improvement purposes. Results. The study of performance factors for software measurement frameworks confirmed the association of some factors with success and quantified that association. In particular, it demonstrated the importance of evaluating contextual factors. The conclusion is that factor-based models may be appropriately used for risk analysis and for identifying constraints on measurement performance. Note, however, that a follow-up study showed that some initially successful frameworks subsequently failed. This implied an instability in the dependent variable, success, that could reduce the value of factor-based models for predicting success. The studies of targeted information quality models demonstrated the effectiveness of targeted assessments for identifying improvement opportunities and suggest that they are likely to be more effective for improvement purposes than using generic information quality models. The studies also showed the effectiveness of importance-performance analysis for prioritizing improvement opportunities.

Measurement Systems Analysis Studies: A Look at the Partition of Variation (POV) Method

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: The Partition of Variance (POV) method is a simplistic way to identify large sources of variation in manufacturing systems. This method identifies the variance by estimating the variance of the means (between variance) and the means of the variance (within variance). The project shows that the method correctly identifies the variance source when compared to the ANOVA method. Although the variance estimators deteriorate when varying degrees of non-normality is introduced through simulation; however, the POV method is shown to be a more stable measure of variance in the aggregate. The POV method also provides non-negative, stable estimates for interaction when compared to the ANOVA method. The POV method is shown to be more stable, particularly in low sample size situations. Based on these findings, it is suggested that the POV is not a replacement for more complex analysis methods, but rather, a supplement to them. POV is ideal for preliminary analysis due to the ease of implementation, the simplicity of interpretation, and the lack of dependency on statistical analysis packages or statistical knowledge. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Industrial Engineering 2015

CONTROLE DA QUALIDADE DA INDUSTRIALIZAÇÃO DO IOGURTE SEM CONSERVANTE COM A APLICAÇÃO DA FERRAMENTA APPCC / QUALITY CONTROL OF YOGURT INDUSTRIALIZATION WITHOUT CONSERVATION WITH THE APPLICATION OF THE APPCC TOOL

Stein, Márcia 05 August 2005 (has links)
With the purpose of verifying the quality of industrialization of yogurt without artifivcial preservatives with fruit pulp it was decided to use the Analysis of Risks and Critical Control Points, APPCC in SETREM agro industry. The work has started with an APPCC group first constitution were, hen in a second moment established the risks and ways of prevention. Subsequently, the points to be controlled and the points that demonstrate greater risk incidence were determined, the ones called priorities, the critical points of control that the critical limits determined. For the critical limits the control procedures had been established among them the statistics was used carrying out the statistical process control in temperature control during the fermentation of the yogurt where from the superior and inferior limits the control letters were built to follow the process. In order to verify the efficiency of the equipment and operators the application of the Measurement System Analysis (MSA) in ten yogurt samples during the determination of pH-gâmetro. Later wasandyzed necessary corrective actions were delimited to be applied in apply wag lines of the critical limits. Some procedures verification for proper system APPCC were needed, that is, procedures in addition to those used in the control to demonstrate if the system APPCC is being efficient. With the application of the tools, the guarantee of the quality of the final product was gotten decreasing the necessity of the finished product inspections / Com a finalidade de verificar a industrialização do iogurte sem conservante com polpa de fruta, com qualidade, é que se decidiu empregar a ferramenta de Análise de Perigos e Pontos Críticos de Controle, APPCC, na agroindústria/SETREM.

Rocha, Hermes Soares da 30 November 2016 (has links)
Laboratory tests for technical evaluation or irrigation material testing involve the measurement of various greatnesses, as well as monitoring and control of test conditions. Any measurement and control system naturally presents instabilities that can affect the quality of the test results, resulting in increased measurement uncertainty. The implementation of the Statistical Quality Control may be promising for detecting causes of variation non-random, evaluation of the tolerance permitted to data of the process and breakdown of the main variability components of a measuring system. In this sense, considering the hypothesis of possibility of improving the quality of test results, the present study aimed at using statistical quality control techniques and measurement systems analysis to assess the reliability of test benches of microirrigation emitters, improve measurement and control systems adopted in the benches and to diagnose percentage of contribution of the factors inherent in the measurement and control systems in the total variability of flow measurements on uniformity tests. The research was carried in Laboratório de Ensaios de Material de Irrigação (LEMI/INCTEI/ ESALQ/USP). Shewhart control charts were developed, exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA), and capability index for the process of measuring the test pressure, temperature monitoring of water and flow, regarded as the quality variables for determination the flow curves as a function of inlet pressure and uniformity of flow for microsprinkler emitters and drip. In addition, it was made study of repeatability and reproducibility (Gage RR) of flow measurement system for which were used 10 repetitions in three work shifts (morning, afternoon and evening), with 13 emitters in the microsprinkler\'s bench and 25 emitters in the drip bench. There wasn\'t influence of the work shift in the obtained measures for flow and the improvement of the adjustment process of the test pressure for the implementation of the integrative-derivative proportional controller (PID) to microsprinklers test was sufficiently detected by control charts. The pressure and water of temperature remained stable during the tests and weren\'t identified non-random causes of variability in routine tests. The process control and measurement of pressure was classified \"excellent\" to performance and capability to remain in the range of specification and centralization in relation to the reference value (desired target), to the two benches. As expected, the variability between emitters was the greater contribution component in the total variance of flow, corresponding to 95.47% and 96.77% for microsprinkler and drip, respectively. The repeatability and reproducibility for flow measurement system (Gage RR) was \"acceptable\" for the two benches, with the contributions respective of 4.53% and 3.23% relative to the total variance, associated with uncertainties of Gage RR.
