Volba generálního ředitele České televize v roce 2017 jako zpravodajské téma / The election of the Director General of Czech Television in 2017 as a news topic

Coufalová, Dominika January 2019 (has links)
The thesis deals with the election of the Director General of Czech Television in 2017. The topic is viewed from the perspective of the media agenda of print and online media. The researched media was chosen by the key of the highest readership in the period from the beginning of January to the end of April 2017. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part deals with the specifics of the effects of media, which categorizes into three types. Furthermore, the theory mentions the concept agenda-setting, which belong to the long-term effects of the media, and which includes the examined media agenda. The theory also defines the concepts of public service and public service media, related terms and basic legal anchoring. The theoretical part also presents the Czech Television institution and its supervisory body, which elects the General Director, the Council of Czech Television. The practical part, through the analysis of news outputs that were published for the election in the defined period, using quantitative content analysis and qualitative analysis of the frameworks, shows how the choice was displayed in the media environment and what topics it raised. The quantitative part defines the codes that were most frequent in the news output. The qualitative part...

Mediální pokrytí Fridays for Future / Media coverage of Fridays for Future

Honc, Martin January 2020 (has links)
The present thesis investigates the impact of the global strike for climate organised by the Fridays for Future movement and led by Greta Thunberg on the approach of selected Czech media toward their coverage of environmental topics. By applying the method of quantitative content analysis, the thesis aims to uncover how Czech media reported on a clearly defined area of ecological problems and incidental environmental topics before and after the protest, while dedicating special attention to the representation of topics and frames in media agenda and the coverage of the respective persons and organisations involved. The theoretical section defines global ecological issues and presents theoretical concepts relevant for studying the media coverage of environmental topics and the impact of social movements and their protests on the agenda of the topics at hand with regard to historical and societal contexts. The thesis' methodology introduces the primary and secondary research questions and explains the choice of the variables of interest for the subsequent quantitative content analysis of selected Czech media. The practical part interprets the results of the analysis and presents a discussion which confronts the results with insights from comparable foreign studies and dissertations mentioned in the...

Nastolování agendy masovými sdělovacími prostředky / Agenda Setting Role of Mass Media

Veselka, Petr January 2014 (has links)
The goal of here below presented text is the introduction of the concept of the agenda setting and to try to prove the validity of this theory on the thematic field of economic policy in the period from January 2009 to March 2010. For this purpose two data sets were used. The first one, which represents the public agenda, contains the data from continuous research of public opinion realized by the Public opinion research center (CVVM). The second one is the result of the quantitative content analysis of the TV news and presents the importance of the above mentioned thematic field in the media agenda. For proving of the causal relationship in between those two agendas the method of the pair correlations was used. The results confirm the relatively strong correlation between the media coverage of the topic and its position in the public agenda`s framework. It has been proved that an important role in the whole process represents the fact whether the news is domestic or foreign as well as the importance of gender. The time factor appeared also as a main intervening variable.

News Coverage of Housing Matters: Examining Housing Crises During the Great Recession and the Covid-19 Pandemic

Sharonda D Woodford (16676292) 03 August 2023 (has links)
<p>Housing is an issue that affects all individuals in society. People have firsthand experiences with housing daily. Housing is also a macro issue that is affected by and has implications for the nation’s economy and public policy. Despite the centrality of housing for individuals <i>and</i> society, few scholars have examined media coverage of housing issues and housing policy. This gap is especially problematic when considering the critical role of the housing market collapse in the 2008 Great Recession, the landmark housing policies instituted during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the media's potential to shape perceptions of housing policy and the economy. In this study, I use content analysis to examine the media agenda-setting and framing of housing and housing policies from 2005 to 2010 and 2020 in the <i>New York Times</i>. I investigate whether housing is framed in episodic or thematic ways and how housing media frames changed in response to the economic collapse and the pandemic. I also examine the context of media agenda-setting using housing topics. Lastly, I pay particular attention to whether housing media frames and housing topics are racialized. The data for this project was collected from the <i>New York Times</i> between 2005 - 2010 and 2020. The search terms used to identify relevant news articles were housing policy, subprime, affordable housing, foreclosure, homeownership, and eviction. The articles identified are all from the front page of the <i>New York Times</i>.</p>

Media som kritisk granskare : en kvalitativ studie om medierapporteringen av hållbarhet / Media as a critical scrutinizer : a qualitative study on media reporting of sustainability

Malmberg, Charlotte, Provén, Agnes January 2018 (has links)
Over the past decades, sustainability-related subjects have become more significant, both in science and in popular science. Previous research shows that sustainability reports and sustainability work are usually studied from a business perspective. Media is an important stakeholder for businesses and is often one of the main intermediator between companies and its other stakeholders, making its reporting valuable to both parties. We have therefore chosen to adapt a stakeholder perspective that of the media is the main focus. The purpose of this study is to throughout a stakeholder perspective contribute knowledge about the role of media as a critical scrutinizer in the reporting of sustainability reports and sustainability work. The result shows that media does not take on the role as a critical scrutinizer to the fullest since the reporting is not particularly extensive. We have conducted a qualitative content analysis of popular science articles based on an abductive approach. We applied a cross-sectional design in our qualitative methodology. Our analysis can be compared to the thematic analysis, since we created themes with associated subcategories to encode our material. We based the study on three newspapers to capture the variation in the way media communicates. We adopted an interpretative approach with inspiration from the hermeneutical perspective. Our analysis model was developed based on the theoretical frame of reference based on our literature review and theories. Our research shows that news articles generally weakens the legitimacy regarding the current company. The news articles concern both general and specific areas linked to sustainability and usually include impartial voices that comment on the texts. Furthermore, we can find that the search for news articles based on our criteria generated fewer hits than we expected. In addition to this, the media coverage of sustainability reports and work is far less extensive than expected. In particular, the contribution from media on sustainability reporting is almost non-existent. Thus, we can demonstrate that the role of media as a critical scrutinizer in the reporting of sustainability reports and sustainability work in the present is negligible.

Media Agenda-Building Effect: Analysis of American Public Apartheid Activities, Congressional and Presidential Policies on South Africa, 1976-1988

Agboaye, Ehikioya 12 1900 (has links)
The mass media's role in informing the American public is critical to public support for government policies. The media are said to set the national agenda. This view is based on the assumption of selective coverage they give to news items. Media coverage also influences the salience the public attaches to issues. However, media agenda effect has been challenged by Lang and Lang (1983). These scholars, in their media agenda-building theory, argued that the success of media effect on national agenda is dependent on group support. In order to test this theory, time-related data on South Africa crises, media coverage"of South Africa, American public reactions, congressional, and presidential apartheid-related activities, between 1976 and 1988, were analyzed. Congressional anti-apartheid policies were the dependent and others, the independent variables. The theory made analysis of the data amenable to the additive adopted to test for the significance of the interactive variables, indicated that these variables were negatively related to congressional anti-apartheid policies. The additive model was subsequently analyzed. The time series multiple regression analysis was used in analyzing the relationships. Given autocorrelation and multicollinearity problems associated with time series analysis, the Arima (p, d, q) model was used to model the relationships. This model was used to indicate support, or nonsupport, for the time series regression analysis. The result of the additive model indicated that South African political crises were negatively related to congressional anti-apartheid actions. It also showed that the relationship between the American public reactions and congressional anti-apartheid policies was greater in comparison to all other independent variables. The presidential actions taken against South Africa were negatively related to Congress' anti-apartheid actions. Television had the greatest relationship with congressional anti-apartheid actions compared to newspapers and magazines.

Mediální reflexe politické agendy prezidenta Václava Klause / Media reflection of the president Václav Klaus' political agenda

Picková, Zuzana January 2012 (has links)
Presidents are said to exert their influence mainly through addressing the public and public speaking. Setting the media agenda is considered as one of the presidents' main strategic powers. Although the contemporary Czech president Václav Klaus enjoys substantial media attention, it is not granted that the media report on everything he says and emphasises. This research focuses on the interaction between presidential speeches at important occasions, represented by the 1 January, 28 October, and 17 November address, and the media represented by three nation-wide dailies Mladá fronta DNES, Právo and Blesk. The time span of the research is 2007 to 2011. The analysis seeks to examine how often were the presidential speeches reported by the media, and which particular topics from them generated press coverage. The results show that the media were mostly attracted by the 1 January address, while the 17 November speech received least attention. It has also emerged that the media reporters have been choosing selectively which topics from the speeches to cover. The scope of the space dedicated to each of the topics by the president in his speeches has not been reflected by the journalists. Therefore, significant differences in the topical priorities between the presidential and media agenda were...

The study analyzes the main news criteria that contribute to the agenda-setting of police content with photographs in the covers of Diário dos Campos and Jornal da Manhã, as well as the connection between text and photojournalistic image in this process. To do so, the sample consists on the first week of each even month in the year of 2014 in both newspapers. Enrolled in Line 2 of the Postgraduate Program in Journalism of Ponta Grossa State University, "Journalistic Processes and Social Practices", this investigation is grounded in the following concepts: Media Agenda, News Criteria and Police Journalism. The method used is the quantitative content analysis, with qualitative inferences. The news criteria present in texts and photos of the cover stories about police news, the space these stories occupy and the corresponding content, the format of the text publicized in inside pages that is linked to the cover and the main themes that appear in the cover are evaluated. The analysis identified a tendency of publishing themes coming from official releases and, in Jornal da Manhã, the use of cover stories for contents published in inside pages as notes. News-values that appeared the most are "proximity", "impact", "rarity", "surprise" and "tragedy/drama". With this study, it is intended to contribute academically to the comprehension of news criteria that guide Police Journalism, especially on what concerns the appreciation of said theme on the covers of regional papers headquartered in the country.
