Homogenization or Heterogenization: An Analysis of Korean Newspapers Coverage of Women's Professional Golf Tournaments Held in Korea and the U.S.Yoo, Sang Keon 01 December 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to find out how Korean newspapers covered women's professional golf tournaments held in Korea and the United States. Additionally, an attempt was made to ascertain any trends in the newspapers' coverage of players and activities associated with both tours. This study focused on one daily sport newspaper (Ilgan Sports) and one general newspaper (Chosun Ilbo) from 2004 through 2008. The two newspapers produced 1,699 stories related to the LPGA (n=1,234 articles) and the KLPGA (n= 465 articles). Thus, the newspapers covered the LPGA (72.6%) much more frequently than then KLPGA (27.4%). The newspapers covered the LPGA more in all three categories, with the LPGA receiving 79.4% of the large articles, 74.1% of the medium stories, and 68.7% of the small articles. In addition, the newspapers provided the LPGA more feature story coverage (83.9%) and more photographic coverage (75.7%). It is notable that this study's principal innovation is the finding of changes in the overall approach of the Korean media over the five-year analysis. Specifically, the coverage devoted to the KLPGA tour increased from 21.9 % (2004) to 36.13 % (2008) of the total coverage given to women's golf by the selected newspapers.

Performance of contention based access control for a media frame networkGe, Teng 24 April 2012 (has links)
The idea of a Media Frame network (MFN) was proposed very recently for solving the explosively growing demand for end-to-end large file transfers. This networking method combines the advantage of high transmission speed from optical networks and flexibility and fast header parsing from electronic networks. The MFN is based on very large data units or media frames (MF) compared to IP packets. Due to the logical continuity, transporting data in a media frame network largely reduces the power consumption in the intermediate nodes and routers. Currently the backbone of media frame network has been studied. The remaining challenge is to devise a system solving the problem of transporting MFs through access networks (i.e., the last mile) connecting customers to the backbone networks. To our knowledge, no other research activity regarding this challenge has been reported. If this challenge is overcome and if the overall concept is accepted, the MFN could be a very important step in the evolution of the Internet.
This thesis focuses mainly on the access network. For the first time, a solution is proposed to establish the ability to transport media frames over a standard PON (e.g. Passive Optical Network) architecture. Because of the unique properties of the media frame network, the physical layer model and transport protocols must be rebuilt. Referring to the ITU-T G.987 recommendations, the physical layer is built based on the XGPON specification. In this thesis, the initialization protocols, bandwidth allocation plan, OLT-ONU (OLT: Optical Line Terminal, e.g. central office. ONU: Optical Network Unit, e.g. customer side box) negotiation protocols are designed. Different schemes for each protocol are proposed, with simulation support based on Omnet++. For the transmission of a 7GB file on average, different transparency degrees under different traffic conditions are compared, and the tradeoffs among essential factors are investigated. / Graduate

The Rise of Russian Soft Power : A media frame analysis of the Russia-based channel RTHedlund Kancans, Alexander January 2020 (has links)
In the information age, media has come to be recognized as a credible mean and foreign policy tool to pursue soft power. Authoritarian states like Russia are competing in the realm of ideas through state-funded news outlets such as Russia Today (RT). This by reaching out to global and foreign public spheres and by reporting on an alternative reality of events, issues and problems. This thesis studies the role of the media news outlet RT as a mean to promote Russian soft power. This with a focus on how the channel attempts to persuade and attract an international audience based on the construction of a compelling narrative. To approach this theme empirically, a media frame analysis is conducted utilizing five news frames including; morality, human interest, responsibility, conflict and economic consequences. The overall results suggest that RT attracts and persuades largely by providing an alternative Russian perspective on events, issues or problems. It attracts by appealing both in the direction of the western- and eastern world. It appeals to the west by emphasizing how the West needs Russia to find answers to the pressing issues in global politics. It appeals to the east by suggesting an alternative model of development. RT attempts to persuade are made through the construction of counter-narratives which delegitimizes the Western approach in international affairs. The channel devotes efforts to boost these narratives by selective news porting and handpicking statements made by intellectuals from the perceived “other” western camp.

Rámcování duševních nemocí ve vybraných novinářských výstupech zaměřených na destigmatizaci / Framing of Mental Illness in Selected Media Outputs Focused on DestigmatizationNováková, Barbora January 2021 (has links)
The dissertation called 'Framing of Mental Illness in Selected Media Outputs Focused on Destigmatization' explores how the documentary series 'Life Behind the Wall', online documentary series 'You are not alone', an audio documentary series 'My therapy' communicate the theme of mental health. The work aims to find out how selected journalistic projects framed the issue of mental illness. The theoretical part of the work first deals with mental illness, the concept of stigma and the role of the media in its transmission. It also focuses on destigmatization and defining the most important destigmatization approaches. The next part presents the theoretical basis of concepts such as the influence of the media, agenda-setting and framing. The analytical part presents 10 frameworks, which have been identified using the method of grounded theory. The results are summarized in a discussion, where found frameworks and their limits are being evaluated and compared with best practices based on manuals for journalists and professional publications on mental illness.

Proponenti samostatného Československa v angloamerickém tisku mezi lety 1914 - 1918 / The Proponents of the Czecho-Slovak Independence in English and American press between 1914 - 1918Kříž, Jonáš January 2020 (has links)
The thesis analyses the reflection of the Czechoslovak freedom movement within the English and American daily press during the World War I (1914 - 1918). In its theoretical part the thesis provides the chronological framework of the Czechoslovak movement and discusses its main challenges as well as essential milestones and achievements. It also introduces the reader to the most popular theoretical concepts regarding the idea of the Czech national independence existing at the brink of the war. With regard to the historical perspective the thesis also elaborates on the development and timeline of Masaryk's exile endeavour as well as personal relations, the latter contributing greatly in promoting the Czechoslovak cause abroad. In its analytical part the thesis deals with the sample of media articles related to the issue of Czechoslovaks and their pursuits. Using the qualitative approach it reconstructs the media frameworks through which the theme of the Czechoslovaks was presented and interpreted in a variety of British and American dailies during the Great War. Besides the daily press it also builds its findings upon the historical literature, archival documents and correspondence. Focusing on the identified media frameworks the thesis strives to identify themes, ideas, concepts and arguments that...
