Use of an interactive iTextbook in a college nutrition course: effects on student comprehension, knowledge, application, and engagementBlake, Joan Salge 05 November 2016 (has links)
Colleges and universities have started to recognize the benefits of shifting from a professor-centered instructional paradigm that focuses on the dissemination of information to the learner to a student-centered paradigm. This latter paradigm is designed to provide an environment that enables the student to personalize, analyze, synthesize, and apply the information learned both inside and outside the classroom. Few would argue that such a paradigm shift would be best supported with the provision of a cost-effective, digitally interactive textbook that supports this type of personalized student-centered learning anywhere, anytime. Additionally, an Internet-based textbook would give the student more control of when, what, and how much he/she learns allowing for a potentially deeper exploration of content.
This quantitative study was conducted to ascertain if the use of an instructionally designed, interactive college nutrition textbook (iTextbook) with embedded links to digitally-rich supporting graphics, videos, figures, and self-assessments would significantly improve students’ knowledge acquisition and application of the information as compared to the use of an identical print textbook and a static electronic textbook (eTextbook) in a Portable Digital Format (PDF). This study also looked at the time-on-task for reading the textbook content in each of the three formats. Lastly, this study assessed if students would prefer this type of instructionally designed, digitally-rich iTextbook format rather than reading the same information in a print textbook or a PDF eTextbook.
The results of the study alluded that while there was a trend for a higher mean exam score measuring knowledge acquisition and application of the information read in the iTextbook group and a lower mean exam score in the eTextbook group, the scores among the three formats were not significantly different. The time-on-task spent by each group reading the textbook content was also similar among the three formats. However, the students reading the eTextbook spent a significantly longer amount of time reading the eTextbook compared to the iTextbook yet obtained the lowest average exam score among the three groups. In response to a final questionnaire, students significantly preferred the iTextbook rather than the print or eTextbook formats.
College students reading a textbook in an iTextbook format obtained similar exam scores as those reading the same content in a print or eTextbook format. Compared to the iTextbook, the time-on-task was not only longer for those reading the eTextbook format but this format also produced a lower exam score measuring knowledge acquisition and application. The iTextbook format was more favorably received by college students than the print or eTextbooks formats.

Creating Leadership Efficacy Through Digital Media in the Electricity Supply IndustryMoodley, Kenny 01 January 2017 (has links)
Business leaders lack transformational leadership strategies to promote the use of digital communication in the electricity supply industry. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore transformational leadership strategies to promote the use of digital communication to mitigate electricity-related shutdowns and other electricity-related product recalls. The conceptual framework for this study aligns with general systems theory. The participants recruited in the study were business leaders, key account electricity consumers, and electricity consumers located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The rationale for the target population was their success in implementing transformational leadership strategies to promote the use of digital communication to mitigate the risk of electricity-related shutdowns. Data collection included semistructured interviews, direct observations with 14 participants, archival records/materials, and documents. Saldana's sequence of coding and data analysis technique using thematic coding and content analysis were used to determine specific themes and patterns derived from the 3 data sources. Based on methodological triangulation, 4 emergent themes evolved: business sustainability, digital media, electricity-related product recall crisis, and leadership efficacy that would assist leaders in growing a sustainable business in the electricity supply industry. The results of this study may contribute to positive social change by providing leaders with transformational leadership strategies for embracing digital media to ensure the industry's sustainability. This in turn would encourage improved economic activity, broad-based black economic empowerment, investments in health, education, environmental issues, and business opportunities for small businesses.

Följande kandidatuppsats undersöker hur en elektronisk hälsoapplikation kan utformasför att öka medvetenheten om den personliga dagliga hälsan, fokuserat på huden och atthålla den frisk. Det sker genom att en prototyp har utformats där användaren genombilder samt text får instruktioner för att utföra en självkontroll. Prototypen innehållerockså en bildregistrering där användaren kan ladda upp bilder på en leverfläck ochgenom registreringen kan om leverfläcken utvecklas över tid. Syftet med prototypen äratt undersöka om en elektronisk hälsoapplikation utformad med fokus på återkopplingkan göra det möjligt för en person som inte är utbildad inom ämnet att undersöka sinhud samt se och följa förändring i en leverfläck genom bildanalys. Detta undersöktesgenom två tester. Ett frågeformulär där svarspersonen fick försöka avgöra om enleverfläck var frisk eller inte. Ett användartest där testpersonen fick testa bildanalysen,det som testades var om personen kunde ladda upp en bild samt se skillnad i bildernagenom bildregistreringen.Resultatet visar att majoriteten av enkätsvaren var korrekta svar, närmare bestämt 76,9procent. Personerna kunde identifiera om leverfläcken var frisk eller sjuk med hjälp avinformationen som tilldelades. Resultatet av användartesten visade att personerna kundeladda upp en bild på webbplatsen och sedan förstå bildanalysen. / This bachelor thesis examins how a electronic health application can be made toincrease awareness about personal daily health, with focus on individual skin andkeeping it healthy. This was made by creating a prototype where the user get usefulinformation on how to perform a self examination through text and images. Theprototype also contains functionality that allows the user to upload images of a moleand by an image registration follow possible changes over long periods of time. Thepurpose of the prototype is to investigate if an electronic health application with focuson feedback can make it possible for a person who is not educated in this area to examinthe skin and also discover possible changes over time with the image registration. Twotests were made to examin if this was possible. The first test was an questionnaire wherethe respondet tried to determine if a mole was healthy or not. The second test was a usertest where the test person got to try out the functionality with image registration in theprototype. The person got to upload an image and see the differences through the imageregistration.The results showed that the majority of the collected repsonses from the quetsionnairewas correct, with a percentage of 76,9 correct answers. The respondent could identify ifthe mole was healthy or not through the information that was presented. The results ofthe user test showed that all test persons could perform and understand the functionalityof uploading an image and then analyze the results throgh image registration.
