Year 2004 nearly 1000 new cases of oral cancer were diagnosed in Sweden. An early discovery increases the chances for survival remarkably. The dental profession has an important role in detecting oral cancer. Considering that dental hygienists probably will have a greater responsibility in the future when it comes to examinations, knowledge of oral cancer will be important for this profession. The aim of this study was to examine the dental hygienists knowledge of Oral Cancer in the county of Blekinge, Kalmar and Kronoberg, as well as their experiences in detecting oral cancer. Questionnaires were sent out to 137 dental hygienists in South-eastern Sweden, out of which 80 responded. The questionnaire consisted of 22 questions concerning their knowledge in regards to for example riskfactors, symptoms, localisations as well as questions about education in oral cancer. Data was processed in SPSS (Statistical Package of Social Sciences), and is shown in descriptive statistic. The result showed that the dental hygienists had good knowledge in regards to symptoms and localisation of oral cancer as well as the side effects of the treatment. However their knowledge about riskfactors that may lead to oral cancer were generally bad. Of the respondents 49 % had detected or suspected oral cancer. Almost all of the dental hygienists who were asked would like more education on the subject, both theoretical and clinical. This study indicates that the dentalhygienist role is changing, and therefore more education is needed on this subject.

Bakgrund: Diabetes mellitus typ 2 (DMT2) är en livsstilsrelaterad och genetiskt betingad sjukdom som påverkar hela familjen, inte bara personen som har diagnosen. Sjuksköterskan kan genom familjefokuserad omvårdnad utveckla ett samarbete med familjen och stödja genomförandet av nödvändiga livsstilsförändringar. Syfte: Att beskriva familjers erfarenheter av att leva med DMT2. Metod: En litteraturöversikt med induktiv ansats baserad på elva kvalitativa artiklar som analyserades utifrån Fribergs femstegsmodell. Resultat: Oro och osäkerhet präglade många familjers vardag och de upplevde svårigheter i samspelet. Det fanns en avsaknad av kunskap om DMT2 och familjer efterfrågade därför mer information från sjukvården. Familjerna hade olika inställning till DMT2 och graden av engagemang gällande sjukdomshanteringen varierade. När familjerna tillsammans började laga diabeteskost och ökade sin fysiska aktivitet underlättades hanteringen av DMT2. Slutsats: I mötet med familjer som lever med DMT2 är det viktigt att sjuksköterskan ser familjen som ett system där alla delar påverkar varandra. När familjen enas i att anpassa livet efter DMT2 blir den nya vardagen lättare att hantera. / Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) is a lifestyle-related and genetically-related disease affecting the entire family, not just the person diagnosed. The nurse can develop family nursing with the family and support the implementation of necessary lifestyle changes. Purpose: To describe family experiences in living with DMT2. Method: A literature overview with inductive approach based on eleven qualitative articles analyzed by Friberg´s five-step model. Results: Anxiety and insecurity characterized the everyday lives of many families and they experienced difficulties in the interaction. There was a lack of knowledge about DMT2 and families therefore requested more information from the healthcare. The families had different approaches to DMT2 and the degree of commitment regarding disease management varied. When the families began to cook diabetic diet and increase their physical activity, the management of DMT2 was facilitated. Conclusion: In the meeting with families living with DMT2, it is important that the nurse sees the family as a system where all parts affect each other. When the family agrees to adapt life to DMT2, the new everyday life becomes easier to handle.
