Propriedades mecânicas de fios de NiTi e CuNiTi com efeito memória de forma utilizados em tratamentos ortodônticos / Mechanical properties of NiTi and CuNiTi wires used in orthodontic treatment

Marco Abdo Gravina 21 September 2007 (has links)
Leveling and aligning orthodontic wires must be able to generate light and continuous forces. Thus need to have high springback and flexibility. For this purpose it was suggested a variety of supereslatic and termoactivated Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) wires that may offer a load-deformation curve, in a constant plataform. Copper NiTi wires are presented as exhibiting better thermoactivating properties for optimum-forces system with better dental movement control. The aim of this study was to compare 8 NiTi superelastic and thermoactivated wires of six different brands (GAC, TP, ORMCO, MASEL, MORELLI and UNITEK) to Copper addicted wires (CuNiTi 270C and 350C, ORMCO) to verify if the mechanical properties of Copper NiTi would support its clinical use. Stress-strain tests were done in Engeneering Military Institute (IME-Brazil), through test machine (EMIC- DL 10000 model). Scanning electronic microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy (JOEL, JSM-5800 LV model) was used to determine chemical composition and superficial topography of the wires. Results showed that, in general, thermoactivated NiTi wires exhibited lower deactivation loads when compared to NiTi superelastics. Among the thermoactivated, the GAC and UNITEK ones are the lighter ones. Among the superelastics, the Copper NiTi 270C (ORMCO) were the lighter ones, statistically similar (ANOVA) to thermoactivated NiTi from UNITEK, for 4% strain. Once Copper NiTi 270C showed deactivated loads 62% lower than Copper NiTi 350C , under 4% strain. As regard to Scanning Electronic Microscopy results for superelastic NiTi wires, better superficial burnishing were found for MASEL and MORELLI ones. On the other hand, the worst were ORMCO Superelastic NiTi and CuNiTi 270C. The thermoactivated ones were superficially visibly marked with inadequate superficial topography. Copper NiTi 350 C and UNITEK showed the worst burnishing among the thermoactivated wires, linked to microtags. It was concluded that CuNiTi 350 C showed the greatest deactivation loads and not favorable superficial burning.

Estudo da aplicação de hidróxidos duplos lamelares na remoção e liberação lenta de pesticidas / Study of aplication of Layered Double Hydroxides in removal and slow release of pesticides

Lucelena Patricio Cardoso 13 September 2006 (has links)
The extensive use of pesticides in modern agriculture has been contributing to an increase in environmental contamination. Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs), or anionic clays, bear a layered structure, and a variety of anions can be intercalated between these layers through electrostatic interactions. These layered materials can be used in adsorption/sorption processes and in the slow release of chemical compounds. So this work aims at studing the sorption of the acid herbicides bearing organic anions 2,4-D, MCPA and Picloram, used in national agriculture, through regeneration of calcined Mg-Al-CO3 LDH and anion exchange of Mg-Al-Cl ? LDH. For this purpose, the kinetics of the sorption process was investigated, and the determination of isotherms in two different pH values was carried out. The herbicides were intercalated in Mg-Al ? LDH using two indirect synthesis methods: regeneration of the calcined material and anion exchange in solution; besides the direct synthesis method by coprecipitation. The obtained materials were properly characterized. All the obtained materials, intercalated with each of the herbicides, were used in a kinetic release study in water. The materials obtained by regeneration were also used in a leaching and in a bioassay study, to test the efficiency of LDHs as supports for the slow release of herbicides. From the kinetic sorption process of the organic anions in solution using Mg-Al ? LDH containing chloride or carbonate after calcination, it was observed that the removal of anions occurred through an anionic exchange process in the case of the LDH containing chloride, or through regeneration of the layered structure in the case of the calcined LDH. The intercalation of organic anions in a vertical position was observed in the adsorption/sorption process, and it was shown to be dependent on the herbicide concentration in solution. The calcined LDH was the most efficient for removal of anions in solution. The herbicides supported on LDHs, presented a slower release in water than the same compounds in their free form, and the release behavior was not dependent on the methodology used for the preparation of the matrix. Leaching study results using the LDH obtained by regeneration as matrix demonstrated a slow release of the active ingredient, mainly for the Picloram herbicide. The bioassay showed that the release behavior of the supported herbicides was efficient in the control of plant seeds germination at preemergence applications.

El aprendizaje distribuido como estrategia didáctica en la enseñanza del vocabulario de ELE : Un acercamiento a su uso en el salón escolar sueco / Distributed learning in vocabulary teaching of Spanish in a Swedish school

Gryzelius, Thomas January 2016 (has links)
Studying and learning words in a foreign language in order to develop a vocabulary that promotes communicative competence, is a daunting task both for students and teachers of Spanish as a foreign language in Sweden and elsewhere. In this context we identify one problem; the possibility that words learned in class will be forgotten as soon as they have been tested on a quiz or exam. If our students cannot incorporate new words into their vocabulary it is quite possible that their communicative development will stop or slow down.       In order to understand this problem and find alternative ways to teach vocabulary we investigated a phenomena called ‘the spaced memory effect’. In the field of educational psychology this is when the learner study with repetitions distributed over time. Practices that build on the spaced memory effect are often called distributed learning.       In a small study we tested this effect as an alternative way of teaching and learning vocabulary. From this study we could conclude that the effect is possible to measure and that it is consistent in all the test subjects that followed a study model that was based on repetitions or a distributed learning model. It was shown that after one month the students were able to remember 85% of the words.       The results from this small study provides new perspectives for further investigation and suggests that there are alternative ways of teaching Spanish vocabulary in Swedish schools.

de Mejanes, Naomi 08 1900 (has links)
The objective of this master thesis is to characterize a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) at atmospheric pressure in nitrogen gas in a homogeneous regime. The objective is on the one hand to highlight the different fundamental parameters of these discharges (electronic temperature, electronic density, density of excited and metastable species) but also their spatio-temporal evolutions. In this context a structured electrode was made to characterize the discharge along the gas flow lines as well as optical emission spectroscopy measurements to study the physical chemistry of these discharges. Variations in breakdown voltage and discharge current could be observed between the entrance and the exit of the plasma reactor. This variation could be related to a change in the metastable population of nitrogen N2(A) along the gas flow. In addition, no significant variation in the electronic temperature was noted. In this work, spreading effects of the Townsend discharge were highlighted by a simple and quick method of estimating the discharge area. The discharge is initiated at the exit due to a larger population of energy species compared to the entrance. Wrong discharge area estimates lead to poor estimates of capacitance values of the equivalent circuit and thus to incorrect electrical parameters such as discharge current and gas voltage. This can lead to misinterpretations of DBD physics. The proposed method can be applied with or without fractional electrode, and also in the presence of reactive species suitable for thin-film deposition.

On the Various Extensions of the BMS Group

Ruzziconi, Romain 15 June 2020 (has links) (PDF)
The Bondi-Metzner-Sachs-van der Burg (BMS) group is the asymptotic symmetry group of radiating asymptotically flat spacetimes. It has recently received renewed interest in the context of the flat holography and the infrared structure of gravity. In this thesis, we investigate the consequences of considering extensions of the BMS group in four dimensions with superrotations. In particular, we apply the covariant phase space methods on a class of first order gauge theories that includes the Cartan formulation of general relativity and specify this analysis to gravity in asymptotically flat spacetime. Furthermore, we renormalize the symplectic structure at null infinity to obtain the generalized BMS charge algebra associated with smooth superrotations. We then study the vacuum structure of the gravitational field, which allows us to relate the so-called superboost transformations to the velocity kick/refraction memory effect. Afterward, we propose a new set of boundary conditions in asymptotically locally (A)dS spacetime that leads to a version of the BMS group in the presence of a non-vanishing cosmological constant, called the Λ-BMS asymptotic symmetry group. Using the holographic renormalization procedure and a diffeomorphism between Bondi and Fefferman-Graham gauges, we construct the phase space of Λ-BMS and show that it reduces to the one of the generalized BMS group in the flat limit. / Doctorat en Sciences / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Diffraction Studies Of Deformation In Shape Memory Alloys And Selected Engineering Components

Rathod, Chandrasen 01 January 2005 (has links)
Deformation phenomena in shape memory alloys involve stress-, temperature-induced phase transformations and crystallographic variant conversion or reorientation, equivalent to a twinning operation. In near equiatomic NiTi, Ti rich compositions can exist near room temperature as a monoclinic B19' martensitic phase, which when deformed undergoes twinning resulting in strains as large as 8%. Upon heating, the martensite transforms to a cubic B2 austenitic phase, thereby recovering the strain and exhibiting the shape memory effect. Ni rich compositions on the other hand can exist near room temperature in the austenitic phase and undergo a reversible martensitic transformation on application of stress. Associated with this reversible martensitic transformation are macroscopic strains, again as large as 8%, which are also recovered and resulting in superelasticity. This work primarily focuses on neutron diffraction measurements during loading at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Three phenomena were investigated: First, the phenomena of hysteresis reduction and increase in linearity with increasing plastic deformation in superelastic NiTi. There is usually a hysteresis associated with the forward and reverse transformations in superelastic NiTi which translates to a hysteresis in the stress-strain curve during loading and unloading. This hysteresis is reduced in cold-worked NiTi and the macroscopic stress-strain response is more linear. This work reports on measurements during loading and unloading in plastically deformed (up to 11%) and cycled NiTi. Second, the tension-compression stress-strain asymmetry in martensitic NiTi. This work reports on measurements during tensile and compressive loading of polycrystalline shape-memory martensitic NiTi with no starting texture. Third, a heterogeneous stress-induced phase transformation in superelastic NiTi. Measurements were performed on a NiTi disc specimen loaded laterally in compression and associated with a macroscopically heterogeneous stress state. For the case of superelastic NiTi, the experiments related the macroscopic stress-strain behavior (from an extensometer or an analytical approach) with the texture, phase volume fraction and strain evolution (from neutron diffraction spectra). For the case of shape memory NiTi, the macroscopic connection was made with the texture and strain evolution due to twinning and elastic deformation in martensitic NiTi. In all cases, this work provided for the first time insight into atomic-scale phenomena such as mismatch accommodation and martensite variant selection. The aforementioned technique of neutron diffraction for mechanical characterization was also extended to engineering components and focused mainly on the determination of residual strains. Two samples were investigated and presented in this work; first, a welded INCONEL 718 NASA space shuttle flow liner was studied at 135 K and second, Ti-6Al-4V turbine blade components were investigated for Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation. Lastly, also reported in this dissertation is a refinement of the methodology established in the author's masters thesis at UCF that used synchrotron x-ray diffraction during loading to study superelastic NiTi. The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center is a national user facility funded by the United States Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, under Contract No. W-7405-ENG-36. The work reported here was made possible by grants to UCF from NASA (NAG3-2751), NSF CAREER (DMR-0239512), Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation and the Space Research Initiative.

The effects of whoonga on the learning of affected youth in Kwa-Dabeka township

Shembe, Zamakhosi Thina 09 1900 (has links)
Whoonga is a relatively new addition into the drug market. The need for this study was prompted by the devastating effects this new arrival has had in the lives of young people addicted to it. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of whoonga on the learning of affected youth in Kwa-Dabeka Township. This study adopted a qualitative method and employed a phenomenological approach to explore the experiences of participants with regard to whoonga use and their learning. Data was collected through purposive sampling. Interviews were conducted, using semi-structured and unstructured questions with the help of an interview guide. Observations were also conducted to collect more data. This was done in the classroom during teaching and learning, as well as outside the classroom during recess. The study employed a social learning theoretical framework on the experiences of participants with regard to the use of whoonga. Four participants from one high school in Kwa-Dabeka Township were involved in the study. Themes that emerged from the study were that all the participants were totally ignorant of what they were getting themselves into before they started using whoonga. Peer pressure, coupled with curiosity made their decision to use whoonga easy. Challenges that participants face now on daily basis are far beyond their young age. The findings have indicated that learning is a situation of near impossibility for the participants. The findings have also depicted a picture of young people who are trapped in a vicious cycle of one of life‟s harshest living conditions in terms of their encounters with parents, school and the communities they come from. Despite their hopes for a brighter future one day, participants see no end in sight for their suffering at the hands of this unforgiving, destructive drug at this point in time. / Educational Studies / M.
