Revisiting Cognitive and Neuropsychological Novelty Effects

Poppenk, Jordan 06 December 2012 (has links)
Recent proposals have attributed a key role to novelty in the formation of new episodic memories. These proposals are based on evidence of enhanced memory and greater metabolic activity in the hippocampus in response to novel relative to familiar materials. However, such novelty effects are incongruous with long-standing observations that familiar items and lists are associated with better memory than novel ones. In four experiments, I explored possible reasons for this apparent discrepancy. In Experiment 1, I directly tested whether previously observed novelty effects were the result of novelty, discrimination demands, or both. I used linguistic materials (proverbs) to replicate the novelty effect but found it occurred only when familiar items were subject to source confusion. In Experiment 2, to examine better how novelty influences episodic memory, I used experimentally familiar, pre-experimentally familiar, and novel proverbs in a paradigm designed to overcome discrimination demand confounds. Memory was better for both types of familiar proverbs. These cognitive results indicate that familiarity, not novelty, leads to better episodic memory for studied items, regardless of whether familiarity is experimentally induced or based on prior knowledge. I also conducted two fMRI experiments to evaluate the neural correlates of the encoding of novel and familiar forms of information. In Experiment 3, I compared the neural encoding correlates of source memory for novel and familiar visual scenes using fMRI. Replicating previous neuroimaging studies, I observed an anterior novelty-sensitive region of the hippocampus specialized in novelty encoding. Unlike past studies, I also probed for familiarity-encoding regions and identified such regions in the posterior hippocampus. I replicated this pattern in Experiment 4 using proverbs as stimuli. As in Experiment 2, I found the effect held whether familiarity was based on prior knowledge or experimental induction. In both fMRI experiments, anterior and posterior hippocampal regions were functionally connected with different large-scale networks, helping to explain local variation in hippocampal functional specialization in terms of different neural contexts. Together, these experiments show that stimulus familiarity enhances episodic memory for materials, and that novelty is processed differently, not preferentially, in the hippocampus. A new model of hippocampal novelty processing is proposed.

SHAPE MEMORY BEHAVIOR OF SINGLE AND POLYCRYSTALLINE NICKEL RICH NICKEL TITANIUM ALLOYS

Kaya, Irfan 01 January 2014 (has links)
NiTi is the most commonly used shape memory alloy (SMA) and has been widely used for bio-medical, electrical and mechanical applications. Nickel rich NiTi shape memory alloys are coming into prominence due to their distinct superelasticity and shape memory properties as compared to near equi-atomic NiTi shape memory alloys. Besides, their lower density and higher work output than steels makes these alloys an excellent candidate for aerospace and automotive industry. Shape memory properties and phase transformation behavior of high Ni-rich Ni54Ti46 (at.%) polycrystals and Ni-rich Ni51Ti49 (at.%) single-crystals are determined. Their properties are sensitive to heat treatments that affect the phase transformation behavior of these alloys. Phase transformation properties and microstructure were investigated in aged Ni54Ti46 alloys with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to reveal the precipitation characteristics and R-phase formation. It was found that Ni54Ti46 has the ability to exhibit perfect superelasticity under high stress levels (~2 GPa) with 4% total strain after 550°C-3h aging. Stress independent R-phase transformation was found to be responsible for the change in shape memory behavior with stress. The shape memory responses of [001], [011] and [111] oriented Ni51Ti49 single-crystals alloy were reported under compression to reveal the orientation dependence of their shape memory behavior. It has been found that transformation strain, temperatures and hysteresis, Classius-Clapeyron slopes, critical stress for plastic deformation are highly orientation dependent. The effects of precipitation formation and compressive loading at selected temperatures on the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) properties of a [111]-oriented Ni51Ti49 shape memory alloy were revealed. Additionally, aligned Ni4Ti3 precipitates were formed in a single crystal of Ni51Ti49 alloy by aging under applied compression stress along the [111] direction. Formation of a single family of Ni4Ti3 precipitates were exhibited significant TWSME without any training or deformation. When the homogenized and aged specimens were loaded in martensite, positive TWSME was observed. After loading at high temperature in austenite, the homogenized specimen did not show TWSME while the aged specimen revealed negative TWSME.

The contamination of water resources by several organic pollutants, including textile dyes, which have caused serious environmental problems. Solid materials for adsorption with appropriate features to be employed in industrial scale, such as high efficiency and low cost have been used in some decontamination processes. The Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) including heterogeneous photocatalysis, have also been used in water treatment, converting the organic pollutants into easily degradable, inert or harmless substances. Multifunctional materials, such as the Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) and their derivatives, show potential in both adsorptive and photocatalytic processes. In this work the textile azo dye adsorption process using a ZnAl-CO3 LDH and the mixed oxide obtained from thermal treatment at 450 °C were focused. The materials presented interesting features and high removal capacity for the dye. The adsorption isotherms showed good correlation with the Langmuir isotherm model and the calculated parameters revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the calcined material was about 6 times higher than the non-calcined material, 1587.1 mg⋅g-1 and 261.8 mg⋅g-1, respectively. The higher adsorption capacity was assigned to the improvement of the textural properties and to the LDH-structure recovery from the calcined precursor. The results showed kinetic control of the process is a chemical adsorption step, and the calculated thermodynamic parameters showed the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. The dye photocatalytic conversion experiments presented that the derivatives of the LDH calcination are promising materials to be used in the AOP. The formation of a ZnAl2O/ZnO nanocomposite from calcination at 850 °C showed the best conversion results from the coupling semiconductors for charge separation strategy that diminish some problems associated with charge carrier recombination and its higher UV absorbance. Thus, the results show the multi-functionality of these materials, giving some light to the discussion about LDH recovery by "memory effect" that remains a topic of intense debate in the literature. / FAPESP: 2013/25043-4

The alloy was prepared from high purity elements in an induction furnace with a concentrate argon flow shield above the molten metal. The atomization was carried out using an induction furnace for melting and argon as atomizer gas. The atomized powder was sieved in 32-106 μm range particles sizes and consolidated by SLM 250 HL device settled at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research, Dresden, Germany. In the consolidation step the best combination of power (P in Watts) and velocity (V in mm/s) were selected through the visual aspect criteria. In the following step the hatching track percentage (S) guided by relative density criteria was included. The atomized powder and the consolidated samples were characterized by optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The composition and the powder morphology were suitable for the SLM processing. The parameters optimization point out that the best combinations were P310v740S40 and P310v740S50, their relative density were around 97 %. The β’ “zig-zag” martensite phase, the SMA effect cause, was prevailing in the consolidated samples microstructure, still, the microstructure although was not-uniform it was relatively grain refined, pointing out the effect of Zr addition. The consolidated samples transformation temperatures were As=172-174C, Af=194-197C, Ms=156-160C, Mf=132- 138C. The results point to a strong indicative of the viability of a manufacturing route of parts with Cu-based SMA through gas atomization followed by SLM consolidation. State and Materials Research, Dresden, Alemanha. Contribution to optical wireless multi-stable micro-actuation / Contribution au micro-actionnement multi-stable piloté par radiations optiques

Liu, Xingxing 07 October 2015 (has links)
In this work, a bistable mechanism based on antagonistic pre-shaped double beams was proposed. Employing the proposed bistable mechanism, a quadristable micro-actuator was designed. ln order to validate the quadristability of the device, a meso-scaled prototype was fabricated from MDF by laser cutting. After the quadristability was experimentally confirmed, a quadristable micro-actuator was realized on SOl wafer using DRIE technique. Strokes for inner row and outer row were reduced to 300 µm and 200 µm respectively. For the actuation of the quadristable micro-actuator,laser heated SMA elements with deposited Si02 layer were used to realize the optical wireless actuation. With the help of a laser beam steering micro-mirror, both inner row and outer row were successfully actuated. ln order to further reduce the stroke, a bistable actuator with stroke reducing structure was designed and a prototype eut from MDF was tested. Bistability was validated and a stroke of 1µm was experimentally achieved. Based on this bistable module, a multistable nano-actuator, which contains four parallel coupled bistable modules, was designed and simulated. The simulated result have indicated that it was capable of outputs 16 discrete stable positions available from 0 nm to 150 nm with a step of 10 nm between two stable positions.

Martensitické mikrostruktury v tenkých vrstvách a objemových monokrystalech Heuslerových slitin Ni-Mn-Ga / Martensite microstructures in thin films and monocrystals of Heusler alloys Ni-Mn-Ga

Onderková, Kristýna January 2020 (has links)
Title: Martensite microstructures in thin films and monocrystals of Heusler alloys Ni-Mn-Ga Author: Kristýna Onderková Department: Department of Surface and Plasma Science Supervisor: Mgr. Ing. Oleg Heczko, Dr., Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences Abstract: The submitted thesis examines mainly the first thin films from Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloy prepared by magnetron sputtering on the new equipment at Institute of Physics of Charles University. However, the work also analysed the thin films prepared in IFW Dresden and bulk material. The main focus of the work is primarily on the martensitic microstructures, because of the significant effect that their twin boundaries have on the magnetic shape memory phenomena. Microscopic techniques used for the research were mainly Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), but also Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). As the Ni-Mn-Ga properties are stronly dependent on chemical composition, the composition was evaluated by two different methods (Electron Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy and X-ray Fluorescence) and observed differences discussed. Finally the results were compared with X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and the films were further characterised by magnetic measurements using Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM)....

Selektives Laserschmelzen von Kupfer-Basis-Formgedächtnislegierungen

Gustmann, Tobias 03 December 2018 (has links)

Wielage, Bernhard, Mäder, Thomas, Weber, Daisy, Schurig, Thomas, Michaelis, Boris 05 August 2013 (has links)
