They use as input a table containing ratings given by users to items, known as the rating matrix. They predict the rating given by user a to an item i by computing similarities of the ratings among users or similarities of the ratings among items. In the first case Memory-Based algorithms are classified as User-based algorithms and in the second one they are labeled as Item-based algorithms. The prediction is computed using the ratings of k most similar users (or items), also know as neighbors. Memory-based algorithms are simple to understand and to program, usually provide accurate recommendation and are less sensible to data change. However, to obtain the most similar neighbors for a prediction they have to process all the data which is a serious scalability problem. Also they are sensitive to the sparsity of the input. In this work we propose an efficient and effective Item-Based that aims at diminishing the sensibility of the Memory-Based approach to both problems stated above. The algorithm is faster (almost 50%) than the traditional Item-Based algorithm while maintaining the same level of accuracy. However, in environments that have much data to predict and few to train the algorithm, the accuracy of the proposed algorithm surpass significantly that of the traditional Item-based algorithms. Our approach can also be easily adapted to be used as User-based algorithms.

Automatic lemmatisation for Afrikaans / by Hendrik J. Groenewald

Groenewald, Hendrik Johannes January 2006 (has links)
A lemmatiser is an important component of various human language technology applicalions for any language. At present, a rule-based le~nmatiserf or Afrikaans already exists, but this lermrlatiser produces disappoinringly low accuracy figures. The performimce of the current lemmatiser serves as motivation for developing another lemmatiser based on an alternative approach than language-specific rules. The alternalive method of lemmatiser corlstruction investigated in this study is memory-based learning. Thus, in this research project we develop an automatic lemmatiser for Afrikaans called Liu "Le~?rnru-idc~)~rifisv~ir'e Arfdr(i~ku~u-n s" 'hmmatiser for Afrikaans'. In order to construct Liu, thc following research objectives are sel: i) to define the classes for Afrikaans lemmatisation, ii) to determine the influence of data size and various feature options on the performance of I h , iii) to uutomalically determine the algorithm and parameters settings that deliver the best performancc in Lcrms of linguistic accuracy, execution time and memory usage. In order to achieve the first objective, we investigate the processes of inflecrion and derivation in Afrikaans, since automatic lemmatisation requires a clear distinction between inflection and derivation. We proceed to define the inflectional calegories for Afrikaans, which represent a number of affixes that should be removed from word-forms during lemmatisation. The classes for automatic lemmatisation in Afrikaans are derived from these affixes. It is subsequently shown that accuracy as well as memory usagc and execution lime increase as the amount of training dala is increased and that Ihe various feature options bave a significant effect on the performance of Lia. The algorithmic parameters and data representation that deliver the best results are determincd by the use of I'Senrck, a programme that implements Wrapped Progre~sive Sampling in order determine a set of possibly optimal algorithmic parameters for each of the TiMBL classification algorithms. Aulornaric Lcmlnalisa~ionf or Afrikaans - - Evaluation indicates that an accuracy figure of 92,896 is obtained when training Lia with the best performing parameters for the IB1 algorithm on feature-aligned data with 20 features. This result indicates that memory-based learning is indeed more suitable than rule-based methods for Afrikaans lenlmatiser construction. / Thesis (M.Ing. Proposal of two solutions to cope with the faulty behavior of circuits in future technologies

Rhod, Eduardo Luis January 2007 (has links)
Device scaling in new and future technologies brings along severe increase in the soft error rate of circuits, for combinational and sequential logic. Although potential solutions are being investigated by the community, the search for circuits tolerant to radiation induced errors, without performance, area, or power penalties, is still an open research issue. This work proposes two solutions to cope with this unpredictable behavior of future technologies: the first solution, called MemProc, is a memory based architecture proposed to reduce the fault rate of embedded microcontrolled applications. This solution relies in the use magnetic memories, which are tolerant to radiation induced failures, and reduced combinational circuit area to improve the reliability when processing any application. The second solution proposed here is an infrastructure IP implementation for the MIPS architecture indicated for reliable systems-on-chip due to its fast adaptation and different levels of application hardening that are allowed. The second solution is also indicated for systems where neither the hardware nor the software can be modified. The experimental results show that both solutions improve the reliability of the system they take part with affordable overheads and even, as in the case of the MemProc solution, improving the performance results.

SRAM system design for memory based computing

Zia, Muneeb 03 April 2013 (has links)
The objective of the research was to design and test an SRAM system which can meet the performance criteria for Memory Based Computing (MBC). This form of computing consists of a Look-Up Table (LUT) which is basically memory array mapped with a function; the computations thereafter consist of essentially read operations. An MBC framework requires very fast and low power read operations. Moreover, the cells need to be read stable as major part of the computation is done by reading the LUTs mapped in the SRAM array. Design and measurement of a prototype MBC test-chip with SRAM system optimized for read-heavy applications is presented in this thesis. For this purpose, a prototype MBC system was designed and taped out. Essential study of the write-ability of the core LUT is also presented. The core memory array for function table mapping was characterized for leakage, write-ability and power saving associated with pulsed read mode.
