Urban Mining in Malmö - An Investigative Study to Identify the Potential of Urban Mining

Anesie, Laura Noemi January 2018 (has links)
This master thesis depicts the topic of urban mining and its possibilities and challenges in the city of Malmö. Because of present day’s high consumption and construction our resources are becoming scarcer. In order to continue to build and consume the way we do, we need to look at other alternatives to obtain these resources. One sustainable alternative is urban mining which is based on society as a resource base where material accumulating over time is a metal storage that can be used through reuse or recycling. This thesis is limited to one type of urban mining which refers to unused cables and pipes that lie underground, so called hibernating cables. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the possibilities and challenges with urban mining in the city of Malmö and to research the Kabel-x urban mining method and its implementation possibilities. To successfully understand the challenges and possibilities a qualitative approach was taken where semi-structured interviews were conducted to see attitudes towards urban mining as well as to identify stakeholders who would work with an urban mining project in the future. The qualitative approach was complemented by a literary research which built the theoretical framework with theories like urban mining, urban metabolism and material flow analysis and sustainability assessments. The empirical discoveries depict topics such as ownership, knowledge-gap or skepticism when it comes to urban mining as well as methods of extractions, but also point to high interest and economic incentives with are in concordance with sustainability aspects. This lead to the conclusion that urban mining shows both possibilities and challenges in Malmö, which proves a challenging but worth implementation. Regarding Kabel-x method, its sustainability aspects and challenges with its implementation, it was concluded that on account of mostly skepticism and knowledge-gap stakeholders proved its implementation challenging but also interesting for urban development.

Abstract: In recent decades, the competition between industries is becoming increasingly fierce. It has seen a worldwide movement to improve competitiveness through quality improvements in products and services, reducing costs by improving productivity, reducing staff and increasing the efficiency of processes. The service standards and environmental legislation has also contributed to the image of companies, acting in favor of its competitiveness. The manufacturers of automotive batteries have a profit margin greatly reduced per unit of output, so they must produce on a large scale to be profitable. The variability of processes, both administrative and industrial to deflections and spending unnecessary resources, which must be eliminated. The intention of this work is to demonstrate how statistical tools can be used to reduce the amount of sludge lead alloys sent for recycling outside, generated in the casting reels for expanding grids of automotive batteries through the use of Six Sigma philosophy. The objective was achieved as shown by the significant reduction in the level of PPM achieved and the consequent cost reduction. The 55.4% reduction in the amount of sludge generated meant less waste lead in circulation on the roads and less handling of material that, while carried in metallic phase, has some rust and it is in powder form. / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

[pt] DESTINAÇÃO DE SUCATAS MILITARES PARA A INDÚSTRIA SIDERÚRGICA, POR MEIO DE MINI MILLS / [en] DISPOSAL OF MILITARY SCRAP FOR THE STEEL INDUSTRY THROUGH MINI MILLS

DIMITRIUS FRANCA LINS 20 May 2020 (has links)
[en] Seeking to maintain its operational capacity and rationalize its means, the Brazilian Army has recently undergone a renewal of its fleet of vehicles, including armored vehicles, administrative vehicles such as ambulances and automobiles, and unshielded operating vehicles on wheels, such as jeeps and trucks. This renovation process allowed older vehicles with more than 15 years of use to be auctioned. Not all vehicles are purchased at auctions held for various reasons, such as high recovery and maintenance values, low commercial value, etc., and are stored on patios in military areas throughout the country, categorized as scrap, awaiting opening of new bidding processes. Usually these new processes have the same negative result, not selling. Faced with new acquisitions of vehicles already made and future acquisitions announced, more vehicular units will be rendered useless, indicating an increase in the number of military scrap. In this context, this work carried out a study to assign military scrap to the steel industry, presenting the legal viability for vehicle depletion, formulating a sustainable process, through the concept of circular economy, causing positive impacts to the environment with the elimination of scraps, and generating, with this project, revenues in the order of 3.6 million reais for the Army.
