K-Rb-Tl relationship in some gneissic rocks

Pacesova, Magdalena 03 1900 (has links)

Granitic and associated metamorphic rocks of Precambrian age in southeastern Ontario, Canada have been studied in order to determine the relationship of K, Rb and Tl and their behaviour during the process of partial melting and magmatic differentiation and metasomatism.

Analytical results for major elements and rubidium and thallium abundances for 52 samples are given.

From the present data, it appears possible that the series of migmatite and granodiorite gneiss originated by partial melting of paragneiss, together with pink granite which developed by late magmatic processes from a granodiorite melt, as was proposed by Chesworth (1967).

Consideration of the geochemical data shows that the principal aspects of the distribution of Rb and Tl during partial melting are controlled by the mineralogical composition of the residuum which remains after partial melting. If mica is present in the residuum a newly-formed melt could have higher or the same K/Rb, K/Tl and Rb/Tl ratios as the parent rock and thus the "classical rule" of lower K/Rb and K/Tl in the anatectic melt is not valid.

Enrichment of Tl in rocks affected by metasomatic processes is demonstrated. The marked decrease of K/Tl and Rb/Tl in the contact rocks (calc-silicate marbles) is caused by stronger migration of Tl, relative to K and Rb, from the intruded pink granite.

The high mobility of thallium compounds is an important factor in the distribution of Tl during metasomatic and magmatogenic processes.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

A Study of Lime-rich metamorphic rocks from Cree Lake, Manitoba.

Antrobus, Edmund Shakerley Alexander. January 1949 (has links)
The rocks studied in this thesis have been the subject of considerable discussion as to their original nature. J. D. Bateman of the Geological Survey of Canada considers that they are of igneous origin whereas others believe that they are metamorphosed sediments. It was thought that a petrographical study might provide some information that would help to decide the problem and it was with this object in view that this study was undertaken. Cree Lake, in the vicinity of which the rocks occur, is situated 2 miles North of the Sherritt-Gordon Mine, Manitoba, which lies about 20 miles east of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border and 120 miles northwest of the north end of L. Winnipeg. The Sherritt-Gordon copper-zinc ore deposit is a very remarkable deposit in that it is a tabular body with a total outcrop length of 16,000 feet and an average width of 15 feet, thus being one of the longest exposed ore bodies in the world. The rocks in question outcrop around Found Lake which lies very close to and just to the southeast of Cree Lake (see Map 44-4) and fall into two groups; firstly, thos that outcrop south of Found Lake in an area which was mapped by J. D. Bateman as an oval body of oligoclase granite (Map 44-4, No. 12) about one mile long and 1/4 mile wide and secondly, those that outcrop as three smaller masses north of Found Lake but enclosed by the arms of Cree Lake and mapped as anorthositic gabbro (Map 44-4, No. 11). The boron partition among coexisting minerals in some igneous and metamorphic rocks

Chawrun, William 04 1900 (has links)

Separated minerals From 18 different rock samples were available. These came From various locations in the Grenville province. OF these samples, there were 44 minerals which had at least one coexisting mineral phase. These were all analysed For boron by thermal neutron irradiation using the Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis at McMaster University Nuclear Reactor. There was a preferential boron partition determined For the samples originating From an igneous source, and a numerical value of 0.7 was determined for k-Feldspar/Biotite. There was no Preferential boron partition among the coexisting phases that originated From a metamorphic source. Sphene and Fluorite contained much less boron than other minerals that coexisted with them.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)
