Asymmetric cyclopentannulation reactions: scope and limitation

Schanen, Patrick 26 September 2003 (has links)
The first part of this dissertation is devoted to the study of an asymmetric [3+2] cycloaddition sequence developed in our laboratory. The cycloaddition sequence used a sulfonamide-based homoenolate equivalent which was cyclocondensed with a cyclic enone. The stereochemistry of the final product was fixed during the first step, the Michael addition to the enone. Our study focused thus on the Michael addition of sulfonamides to enones. We have synthesized a series of chiral and achiral sulfonamides. We then studied the regiochemistry and the stereochemistry of the addition of the anions derived from these sulfonamides to cyclohexenone. The presence of a heteroatom at the (gamma)-carbon of the sulfonamide was crucial for the regiochemical outcome of the reaction. The substituent on the sulfonamide also influenced the facial selectivity of the reaction with chiral sulfonamides, but had no influence on the diastereoselectivity with achiral sulfonamides. The sequence had been applied to various cyclenones. We were also able to apply the method to an acyclic enone with good enantioselectivities. However the method could not be applied to other Michael acceptors. Another part of the present work was devoted to search a new catalytic asymmetric cyclopentannulation sequence. Two different approaches were studied. Phase-transfer catalysis seemed the most appropriate strategy for our objective. We soon realized that sulfur-stabilized nucleophiles could not be used under these conditions. Ketals derived from 3-nitropropanal were thus chosen as potential annulation agents. The racemic version was quite efficient and could be applied to less active acceptors such as unsaturated lactams and lactones. Unfortunately we were not able to realize the reaction with good enantioselectivities. However two new catalysts, obtained by the reaction of cinchonine with 1- and 2-methylnaphthyl chloride, emerged as interesting candidates for the phase-transfer reactions. Organocatalysis was our second approach. The use of rubidium prolinate or the use of proline in the presence of a base proved to be very efficient and the Michael adducts could be obtained with good enantioselectivities. The Michael adducts were easily cyclized and the nitro group could be removed under mild conditions.

The Choral Music of Irish Composer Michael McGlynn

Rossow, Stacie Lee 24 June 2010 (has links)
Michael McGlynn is predominantly known around the world for his choral music that reflects the traditional sounds of Ireland. The greater body of his compositions, however, fit into the contemporary choral genre and represent a sizable contribution to the choral music repertoire of Ireland. This essay begins with a discussion of McGlynn's life and work. Extensive interviews and rehearsal comments with the composer regarding compositional process and performance practice were conducted and are included. The musical history of Ireland and details regarding the harmonic and rhythmic language specific to the vocal music of the country are included to provide background information for the reader. Song comparisons from various sources detail the living nature of Ireland's traditional music. The Appendices contain a complete list of McGlynn's works, a discography, IPA pronunciation guides for McGlynn's Irish language compositions, reference scores for all compositions discussed, and programming details about Michael McGlynn's most frequently performed choral compositions.

Michael Ondaatje's representation of history and the oral narrative

Gamlin, Gordon S. (Gordon Sebastian) January 1991 (has links)
This study examines the function of oral narratives in Michael Ondaatje's representation of history. Ondaatje employs a variety of thematic, structural and stylistic oral narrative strategies in this inquiry. In the course of this work he faces the challenge of translating the open oral quality of the "tale" to the page. Ondaatje's longer prose works counter the printed text's tendency towards stasis through oral narrative and paralinguistic devices. Gradually, the aesthetics of public storytelling inform the process of historiographic revision. Within the oral model, ostensibly verifiable historical facts are no longer subjected to the laws of linear causality; therefore, any central single voice must relinquish its conventional claim to authority. Instead, several "speakers" tell of a shared history. Whereas conventional historiography often focuses on the effect of major historic forces, Ondaatje's oral model reveals how those on the periphery shape and define a given incident. Ultimately, the various participatory agents create the central event in the telling. The study concludes that Ondaatje employs oral narrative strategies to revise monolithic notions of history and to offer an open representation which draws attention to complexities ignored by conventional accounts.
