Analýza cenných papírů mikrofinančních institucí a vlivu jejich veřejného obchodovaní na fungování těchto institucí / Analysis of publicly listed microfinance equity diversification potential and possible mission drift

Pfeffer, Karel January 2017 (has links)
MASTER THESIS Analysis of publicly listed microfinance equity diversification potential and possible mission drift Karel Pfeffer 2017 Abstract The objective of this master thesis is to investigate, whether equity of publicly listed Microfinance institutions (MFIs) can be used for portfolio diversification, while these MFIs still maintain its original social mission. To explore these two aspects of publicly listed MFIs, this study is split in two major parts. The first part is focused on the comparison of risk and return characteristics of selected MFIs shares with conventional financial institutions shares and market equity benchmark indices. The analysis indicates no significant diversification potential in publicly listed microfinance equity. The second part of this thesis is exploring the impact of IPO on publicly listed MFIs social outreach. It was found some evidence of a drift from the original social mission among selected MFIs. However, there is not enough evidence to claim that for-profit investment cause long-term significant operational change of MFIs.

The impact of the National Credit Act on micro lending sales in a bank in South Africa

Rossouw, Zelna 16 March 2010 (has links)
The South African Government moved aggressively to curb predatory lending, consumer abuses and outdated, piecemeal and ineffective legislation on consumer credit through the introduction of the National Credit (2005) and Regulations (2006). As a result the financial institutions and consumers are experiencing increasing pressure from the National Credit Act due to the strict lending regulations placed on the loans that it provides to its consumers or customers. The objective of this research is to determine the impact of the National Credit Act on the sales of a Micro Loan to a customer of a specific bank within South Africa. The research approach of data triangulation research approach was used, divided into two phases. Phase one consisted of data analysed from the specific bank in question and supports the framework and foundation for phase two which consisted of face-to-face semi-structured in-depth interviews with ten industry Micro Lending Industry Experts within South Africa. Content analysis and constant comparative analysis was used to identify the key patterns and themes that emerged The research found that the National Credit Act has had a significant impact on the Micro Lending Market with creating a more formal market and decreasing the informal market. The impact on the consumers repayment default on a micro loan was also significant and defaults decrease following the implementation. The general assumption that not enough time was given to the original goals set out by the Act to support the South African economy. The impact of collections strategy on the profitability of unsecured bank microloans

Kahn, Amos 30 March 2010 (has links)
There has been little empirical work on how collections strategy can be used to maximise profits. The aim of this research was to investigate the impact that one particular collections strategy, called behaviour based collections, had on the costs, revenues and eventual collections outcome of defaulted microloans. This is one of the few studies on the collections function, and perhaps the first to investigate this aspect of collections strategy.Microloan books from different business units were analysed and compared. One business used a behaviour based strategy to collect on arrears, in which a client was expected to establish regular payment behaviour before repaying the arrears amount. The other used an arrears based strategy, where the client was expected to repay missed instalments immediately. Measurements of cash flow, eventual collections outcome, costs and change in credit risk were taken from each sample and tested using Mann-Whitney U tests and chi-square tests. The results show that the eventual collections outcome (whether the defaulted loan is rehabilitated or written off) does not vary according to collections strategy. For both strategies, as credit risk worsens, there is a decrease in revenue received; as credit risk improves, revenue received rises. In contrast to industry best practice, the research finds that behaviour based collections results in 3.37% more revenue when the loan is rehabilitated, and a 4.54% reduction in losses when the loan is written off. The research also finds that the cost of using a behaviour based collections strategy is lower than using an arrears based strategy. These results suggest that the collections industry can realise significant gains from the application of behaviour based collections. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted
