Long Distance Logistic Mobility as an Organising Principle Among Northern Hunter-Gatherers: A Great Lakes Middle Holocene Settlement System

Donahue, Randolph E., Holman, M.B., Lovis, W.A. January 2005 (has links)
No / Concepts of residential and logistic mobility are applied to survey assemblages from multiple decades of research along the interior drainages of central lower Michigan. Drawing on the ethnographic record of boreal hunter-gatherers and archaeological interpretations of long-distance logistic mobility from the Mesolithic of northern England and continental Europe, it is argued that the importance of logistic mobility is underrepresented in summaries of northern hemisphere hunter-gatherers. Reconstruction of Middle Holocene environments suggests that the resource structure of the central Michigan uplands was one that fostered use of logistic mobility, and that interior Middle Archaic assemblages and site structures reveal special function activities systemically tied to residential and other special function sites at lower coastal elevations, as well as currently submerged under Lake Huron. We conclude that rising levels of Lake Huron ca. 4500 B.P. resulted in decreased land area, population packing, and a consequent shift to residential mobility by the Late Archaic. Further, the results of this analysis can serve as a comparative framework for recognizing the role of logistic mobility in the evolution of hunter-gatherer adaptive strategies in other regions.

Lithic technology in the middle Paranapanema: a case study of the Early/Middle Holocene ocuppations of Brito site (Sarutaiá/SP)

Mendes, Diego Teixeira 16 April 2014 (has links)
The present dissertation refers to the study of the lithic assemblages from the Brito site, located at the right bank of the Paranapanema river, in the state of São Paulo. The materials that were studied are associated to dates that go back to the transition between the initial and the middle Holocene, approximately 8,000 to 6,500 BP. Our first objective concerns the technological characterization of the lithic assemblages from an approach based on the concept of operation sequence (chaîne opératoire), with the aim of reconstituting the technical processes and the strategies of usage of raw material that generated the observed artifact variability. The second objective was to verify, by means of analyzing the vertical and horizontal distribution of the lithic materials, the integrity of the occupational floors identified during the fieldwork. We suggest that the oldest lithic assemblages of the Brito site are distributed over an archeological level characterized by a palimpsest of occupations.

Caçadores-coletores na Serra de Paranapiacaba durante a transição do Holoceno Médio para o Tardio (5920-1000 anos AP) / Hunter-gatherers from Parnapiacaba Mountains during the Middle Holocene to the Later Holocene transition (5920-1000 yr BP)

Mendes, Gérson Levi da Silva 22 March 2007 (has links)
This thesis provides the results of an archaeological survey focused in hunter-gatherer settlements from Upper Almas valley, on the western side of Paranapiacaba Mountains. Dates from lithics analysis associated to these sites are compared with results from Middle Ribeira valley, developed by De Blasis (1988). In addition, this Thesis treats to establish frames of reference to understand the formation processes of archaeological sites settled during the Middle Holocene in high depth on high portions of the mountains. The hunter-gatherer continuity between 5920 and 1000 yr BP in the studied area is approached by a paleoambiental treatment: our additional goal is to reconstruct the scenarios of environmental transformations in which these human groups developed their History. Furthermore, this thesis provides an instance to reduce the technological approach over these groups, opening an ecosystem approach which includes dates from palinology, geomorphology and espeleology.

Rupture technique et dynamiques d’occupation au cours de l’Holocène moyen au Brésil / Technical break and occupation dynamics in Brazil during middle Holocene

Da Costa, Amélie 15 June 2017 (has links)
During middle Holocene, between 8000 and 4000 BP, central and northern Brazil lithic industries were often described in terms of lacks more than tangible characteristics: lacks of “lesma” (unifacial shaping tool), lacks of ceramics. Specific technical features linked to that period are not easy to pinpoint because of a high level of artifacts diversity. Described as somewhat elaborate or simple, the specific nature of these industries highlights differences between this period and the previous one. To explain such a change in material culture, external factor hypothesis were proposed: huge environment modification due to climate change, new population that replaces another one. However, it is uneasy to evaluate break modalities regarding few studies on these period assemblages. Our work proposes to characterize the technical systems for the middle Holocene, and, by this way, to broach the technical break phenomenon using Itaparica techno-complex. Two middle Holocene lithic assemblages were study in a techno-functional way: la Toca Nova do Inharé, in Serra da Capivara (Piauí) and the Cajueiro site (BA-RC-19) northeastern of the central plateau (Bahia). Results reveal shared characteristics and significant variability. Organization of different functional parts of tools outlined around recurrent presence of abrupt sides, form a strong shared feature. Tool blanks have, however, high degree of variability according to different sites, explaining the lack of strictly defined tools. Our results compared to available literature data allow us to confirm that these features are specific to these middle Holocene industries and also to bear out the existence of a significant technical break with the Itaparica techno-complex.
