The purpose of this study is to cover the subject of regional and settlement preferences of the Czech population. The study is not only focused on current situation description but it offers time development overview as well. The study describes evolution of the regional and settlement preferences and life values of the Czech population after year 1989. Method used is the representative questioner research done by the Public Opinion Research Centre of the Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in cooperation with the Faculty of Science of the Charles University in Prague. The research was supported by Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports No. MSM 0021620831 "Geographical systems and risk processes in context global changes and European integration" project. The study evaluates regional and settlement preferences under the ideal circumstances and based on respondents actual settlement situation and regional affiliation. From the results of the study the stratification of the regional and settlement preferences with the respondent age are highlighted. The diploma thesis analyses environmental migration, that is, the human migration as a result of environmental change. The aim of the thesis is to assess and explain this trend in the Ústí region in Czechia, a region with an extensive experience of environmentally induced migration due to the deteriorating conditions of the local environment. Special attention was paid to potential migration and the perception of the environment by young people aged 15-29 years. A questionnaire survey was used as the main research method, covering questions about the environment and migration (including the perception of the environment, migration motivation or the character and preference of potential migration). The results suggest, for example, that young people living in an area with deteriorated environment perceive it in a relatively positive way. Most importantly, environmental conditions are not the primary factor leading to the decision to migrate, but a secondary one. Economic factors are becoming more significant when choosing the ideal place to live, rather than non-economic factors. The phenomenon of migration has given rise to prolific research emphasising the psychological adaptation of persons post-immigration. This study focuses on psychological preparation pre-immigration. Literature study and empirical research establish that an immigrant's adaptation is influenced by migration motivation and expectations. Several phases of adaptation occur, during which time individual stress is influenced by one's perception of the balance between the stresses of the new environment and one's personal and external resources. Various migration stressors could be identified in the sample group of South Africans living in Australia. Personal and external resources include effective coping strategies, a positive, committed outlook, strong self-esteem as well as a cohesive family and an acquired support system. Finally, guidelines were produced reflecting that the preparation for immigration is a complex and highly individualised task comprised of providing information, encouraging self-assessment and supplying training to improve the coping startegies of the individual. / Educational Studies / M.
