Bigger Eyes in a Wider Universe: The American Understanding of Earth in Outer Space, 1893-1941.

Prosser, Jodicus W. 2009 May 1900 (has links)
Between 1893 and 1941, the understanding of the Milky Way galaxy within the American culture changed from a sphere to a spiral and Earth's location within it changed from the center to the periphery. These changes were based primarily upon scientific theories developed at Mount Wilson Observatory near Pasadena, California. This dissertation is an "astrosophy" that traces the history of changing depictions of the Milky Way in selected published sources and identifies key individuals, theories and technologies involved. It also demonstrates why the accepted depictions of the universe envisioned at Mount Wilson were cultural-scientific products created, in part, as the result of place. Southern California became the hearth of a culture that justified its superiority based upon its unique climate. Clear skies, remarkable visibility, and a perceived existence of intense natural light became the basis for the promotion of Mount Wilson as the premier location for astronomical observations. Conservation, en plein air paintings, and the concept of paysage moralis are Southern Californian cultural products of the early 1900s that promoted an idealized society capable of exceptional intellectual endeavors and scientific accomplishments. The efforts of astronomers Hale, Shapley, Adams, Hubble and Ritchey resulted in the changing American understanding of the universe. This dissertation reveals how the diverse social interactions of these astronomers intersected Arroyo Seco meetings, women's organizations, the Valley Hunt Club elites, and philanthropic groups that comprised the schizophrenic culture of Pasadena. Their astronomical theories are compared to other aspects of the Southern Californian culture revealed in the writings of Raymond Chandler, Nathanael West and John Fante. The desire of astronomers to gain prestige from their discoveries is compared to competition in the creative processes of Hollywood. The theories created by astronomers and the films of the motion picture industry relied upon establishing an accepted second space within the minds of their audiences. By the end of the study period, the universe accepted by most Americans was a "California Universe". It was not a discovery of pure science, but rather a culturalscientific product of the Mount Wilson astronomers, the Pasadena community and the landscape and culture of Southern California.

Interstellar Gas Clouds and Gen. Ed. Astronomy Students: Who Are They? How Do They Behave?

Schlingman, Wayne M. January 2012 (has links)
The first chapter begins with the observations of 1,882 sources from the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) at 1.1 mm in HCO⁺ J = 3 − 2 and N₂H⁺ J = 3 − 2. We determine kinematic distances for 529 sources and derive the size, mass, and average density for this subset of clumps. The median size of BGPS clumps is 0.75 pc with a median mass of 330 M⊙ (assuming T(Dust) = 20 K). The median HCO⁺ linewidth is 2.9 km s⁻¹ indicating the clumps are not thermally supported and provide no evidence for a size-linewidth relationship. This collection of objects is a less-biased sample of star-forming regions in the Milky Way that likely span a wide range of evolutionary states. We study in detail the G111 Infrared Dark Cloud northwest of NGC 7538 with the K-band Focal Plane Array. We map NH₃ (1,1) and (2,2), H₂O maser, and CCS emission simultaneously with the GBT. We find the NH₃ gas traces the 1.1 mm BGPS structure very well with gas kinetic temperatures consistently close to 15 K. Typical column densities are 2.5 × 10¹⁴ cm⁻² with a median abundance of NH₃ to H₂ of 5.94 × 10⁻⁸. The median linewidth of the NH₃ emission is 0.64 km s⁻¹ indicating the filament is not thermally supported. The NH₃ is subthermally populated along the entire filament. Individual NH3 peaks have a median size of 0.61 pc, mass of 188M⊙, and density of 3.4×10³ cm⁻³. An activity analysis shows the most active star forming regions are found at the junctions of the subfilaments that make up the larger G111 IRDC. The last chapter describes our systematic examination of individual student responses to the Light and Spectroscopy Concept Inventory national dataset. We use classical test theory to form a framework of results that is used to evaluate item difficulties, item discriminations, and the overall reliability of the LSCI. We perform an analysis of individual student’s normalized gains, providing further insight into the prior results from this data set. This investigation allows us to better understand the efficacy of using the LSCI to measure student achievement.

Investigation of star forming regions in Cepheus / Cefėjo žvaigždėdaros rajonų tyrimas

Maskoliūnas, Marius 03 February 2014 (has links)
The interstellar matter in the Galaxy is concentrated in a thin layer close to the galactic plane, mostly in spiral arms. Most of the interstellar matter is in a form of atomic and molecular gas and only 1% of its mass is in a form of small (0.01 – 0.1 µm) dust grains which absorb and scatter the light of stars and cause the interstellar extinction. A part of interstellar gas and dust are in a diffuse form and fill the space with density which exponentially decreases with the distance from the galactic plane. However, in the spiral arms gigantic molecular clouds are present which play an outstanding role in the evolution of the Galaxy, since in them star forming processes take place. Molecular and dust clouds, young star clusters and associations and other star forming regions are concentrated in the Milky Way plane. However, due to gravitational and radiation interactions between the molecular clouds and the young massive stars, some fragments of spiral arms deviate from the galactic plane. One of such deviating branches from the Local (Orion) spiral arm is a huge elongated system of molecular and dust clouds located in the Cepheus constellation which is known as the Cepheus Flare. Most of the objects investigated in this dissertation belong to this branch of the Local spiral arm. The objects selected for the investigation are star forming regions in the vicinity of the reflection nebula NGC 7023, a group of dark clouds TGU 619, the young open cluster NGC 7129 and the...
