An Interprocessor Communication Link for Data Minicomputers

Brett, Michael Edward 05 1900 (has links)
<p>The ACTR (Asynchronous Communications Transmitter Receiver) is a serial data transfer link for the Data General ECLIPSE and NOVA minicomputer lines. The ACTR allows the interconnection of computers in the NOVA and ECLIPSE lines into a multiprocessor system by permitting blocks ot data to be transferred through the computers' program I/O tacitities. Such a small computer multiprocessor system is a powerful, high flexible alternative to a single large computer in many applications. The major application of the ACTR is in systems where the linked processors are either far remote from one another or where the system is so configured that a master/slave environment is practical.</p> <p>This report will deal with the theory of Operation of the hardware as well as the software control of the ACTR. A method of handling the ACTR in a multi-tasking environment under the Data General operating systems, RDOS/RTOS, will also be developed.</p> / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

Digital Control Studies of a Liquid-Liquid Extraction Column Using a Minicomputer

Jarvis, Robert C. F. 04 1900 (has links)
<p> This report covers two topics. First is the development of computer programs to carry out the calculations needed to determine the control policy to bring a process from one set of steady state conditions to another. Examples of the implementation of control policies for a liquid-liquid extraction column are included. Suggestions have been made for means of decreasing the calculation time and for means of increasing the size of problem that may be solved. </p> <p> The second part discusses an initial project of using a Supernova computer as a direct control computer. Characteristics of direct digital control are illustrated using an analog simulation of the extraction unit as the controlled process. </p> / Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

Design and development of an interface board between a minicomputer and a CDC printer with a memory buffer and a programmable vertical format throw

Orman, PTF January 1988 (has links)
Thesis (Masters Diploma (Technology)-- Cape Technikon, Cape Town,1988 / Brown Davis and McCorquodale is one of the major suppliers of cheques to the banking industry. To produce these cheques they use a number of different print systems, one of which comprises of a minicomputer, an industry standard tape deck and two printers, a Diablo daisywheel and a Control Data Corporation (CDC) printer which was extensively modified to cater for the requirements of the cheque printing industry. The CDC printer is used to print the code line on the cheques using magnetic ink. After each line is printed the computer sends a form feed command which causes the printer to throw paper. This throw is controlled by a paper tape, known as a Vertical Format Unit tape, or rather a VFU tape. This tape has holes punched into it at specific places which determine the amount of paper throw also known as vertical feed. The holes are sensed by brushes which are pulled up to 5 volt when they pass over a hole and touch a roller connected to the 5 volt line. This system, being of an electro-mechanical nature, is prone to faults and causes much down time due to mechanical wear on the brushes and dirt on the roller. This means that the brushes have to be adjusted and therefore also means that the timing has to be readjusted each time. The timing relationships are discussed in Section 2.B

Communication Aids For Cerebral Palsied Children

Day, R. C. 09 1900 (has links)
<p> This dissertation deals with the problems associated with the design and construction of communication aids for children with cerebral palsy. Attention is focused on an electronic communication board developed at the Ontario Crippled Children's Centre in Toronto which displays a matrix of Bliss symbols and English words that can be selected by appropriate activation of an interface which controls the sequential illumination of the symbol blocks. A number of interfaces were constructed. Appropriate electronic switching arrangements were incorporated with the interfaces in order to achieve activation of the interface upon the initiation of a movement rather than the maintaining of a position. The communication board was interfaced to a PDP 11-10 minicomputer which was used to provide a dual output of the word and associated Bliss symbol, selected using 'interface control, on a teletype and oscilloscope screen respectively. </p> <p> Descriptions of associated communication type devices include an electronic attention getting device, page-turner interface, and programmed learning board. </p> / Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

An Appraisal Of The Supernova Minicomputer As A Process Simulation Tool

Foran, Charles 01 1900 (has links)
<p> The object of this work was to evaluate the Supernova ninicomputer as a process simulation tool. To accomplish this obje c tive the GEMCS ste2dy-state simulation system wa.s programmed for the Supernova. This system was programmed to run in five different modes, BASIC , two modes which require that al.L progra1ns are written in Assembly Language, and two modes in which programs may be called from the disk. Of these latter two modes, one requires all programs to be written in Assembly Language; the other mode allows programs to be written in Assembly Language or FORTRAN IV. </p> <p> Two case studies which had previously been run on the CDC 6400 were run on the Supernova to test and evaluate f our of the modes in which GEMCS was proerammed for the Supernova. </p> <p> The studies have also provided an a ssessment of the hardware and softws.re facilities of the Supernova and the results of thjs assessment were documented. In addition the opera tion of the various strategies used to impl ement GEMCS have provided an indication of the feasibility of the impl ementation of the dynamic system simulation program, DYNSYS. </p> / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
