The growth of Brazilian Baptist churches in metropolitan São Paulo, 1981-1990

Price, Donald Edward 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This work endeavors to analyze the growth of Brazilian Baptists in metropolitan Sao Paulo between the last two official censes. Protestants have been accused of not adapting to Brazilian culture, of organizing "miniconvents," rather than life and society-transforming communities, of having their roots so deeply embedded in their rural past that they are maladjusted to Brazilian urban life. Is this so? Has the result of over one hundred years of missionary effort been the production of a carbuncle within the Brazilian social fabric, a foreign body that must be rejected - as it rejects its host? Chapter two traces the history of Brazil, and of the insertion of Missionary Protestantism into the Brazilian social fabric. Special emphasis is given to the growth and development of the Brazilian Baptist Convention, especially in the State of Sao Paulo. Finally, the growth of the Brazilian Baptist churches in metropolitan Sao Paulo between the last two censes, 1981-1990, is analyzed. Brazilian Baptists have grown at better than twice the rate of the general population, especially in the urban, residential, communities. It would appear that Brazilian Baptists are well adapted to their environment, inasmuch as they are growing within the Brazilian urban context. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / M. A black heart : the work of Thomas Jefferson Bowen among blacks in Africa and in Brazil between 1840 and 1875.

De Souza, Alverson Luiz. January 1998 (has links)
This thesis is about Thomas Jefferson Bowen (1814 - 1875), a Baptist missionary of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, United States. Bowen worked in Africa and tried to work with slaves in Brazil. These facts made Bowen a missionary ahead of his time. He had a different perspective and attitude to Africa and Africans. His book Central Africa, his personal letters, his articles, his life, show that he was deeply involved with the idea that Africa could be much more than only a good place to purchase slaves. His whole missionary life was expended in a project to train blacks to work in Africa as missionaries and teachers. What made Bowen a different missionary from his fellows in his time was the fact that he was able to understand and respect the culture of the people with whom he was involved. He could see and appreciate the structures of the African society and he planned a development project from the African perspective. He was a missionary who believed that the Western society was not appropriate for Africa. Africa had to find its own way. He was different because he believed that missionaries have to speak the language of the people and should not force the native people to learn English as a "holy" language. We present this work as a tribute to this missionary whose life and relationship with blacks can be seen as an example of respect and understanding of the culture of a people. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1998.

For noticing the stress and conflicts, we choose analyses some letters written by priest Jose de Anchietain reference to the missionary activities in the cities of Sao Vicente and Piratininga (1554 1570). Based on an interdisciplinary premise, in cooperation with Anthropology and History references about the theme, the proposal of our analysis is identifying references in the missionary letters which allow us to think how native Brazilian people were instructed about religion and how they resisted to the new culture that they were being forced to, as well as the challenges and possible contradictions shown in the Colonizer’s praxis. We intend, this way, contribute to the knowledge expansion about the introduction of the Catholicism in Brazil by sixteenth century, in the context of Science of Religion / A presente dissertação tem como objeto as zonas de contato e os encontros culturais entre indígenas e missionários jesuítas na América Portuguesa no século XVI.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jefferson Mariano Santana.pdf: 1158195 bytes, checksum: 716dd97b639667ff79a5e6121a6bd066 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-09-12 / The purpose of this dissertation is to present, through the Narrative by Fernão Cardim, his secretary, with whom he was present as the visit of Father Cristóvão de Gouveia, designated Visitor of the Province of Brazil by the General of the Company of Jesus, Cláudio Aquaviva, between 1583 and 1585. It was proposed to analyze the situation encountered by the Visitor and Fernão Cardim, facing a scenario that had internal problems of the Company of Jesus, such as the lack of missionary fervor, the use of slave labor by autochthons and negroes of Guinea and external problems with the conflict between settlers and Jesuits by exploiting the work of the Indians and their temporal administration in the villages. In this sense, this work shows how the visitor Cristóvão de Gouveia solved the problems in the province, starting from his effective action in spaces important for the missionary project as, for example, the villages, sugar mills, colleges, with measures that aimed to provide the realization of catechesis and, above all, to undertake the colonization of Brazil, which is why the intense participation of the Portuguese Crown in this missionary process is justified / O objetivo desta dissertação é apresentar através da Narrativa de Fernão Cardim seu secretário, com quem aqui esteve como transcorreu a visita do Padre Cristóvão de Gouveia, designado Visitador da Província do Brasil pelo Geral da Companhia de Jesus, Cláudio Aquaviva, entre 1583 – 1585.

Flautas e maracás = música nas aldeias jesuíticas da América Portuguesa (séculos XVI e XVII) / Flutes and maracas : music in the Jesuit missions of Portuguese America (XVI-XVII)

This thesis explores musical relations between Jesuit missionaries and Amerindian peoples in colonial Portuguese America (Brazil and the State of Maranhão) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Based mainly on Jesuit sources, this work focuses initially on the musical conventions adopted by the Society of Jesus and on their discussion and adaption within the missionary contexts of Portuguese Asia and America. The thesis then argues that different aspects of native cultures enabled the transition from conventions to practice, with emphasis on three spatial contexts: the sixteenth-century coast and São Paulo plateau, the seventeenth-century Amazon, and the northeastern hinterland. In sum, the thesis develops a story of constant negotiation, where music played multiple roles and where different historical agents exchanged sounds that proved to be indispensible in the religious dialogue between Amerindian peoples and European missionaries / Doutorado / Historia Social / Doutor em História
