Some basics concepts and your evolution in the time about celular systems was detailed here, meanly the CDMA tecnique, specialy about spread-codes and funtionaly principies. Since this, the mobile radio enviroment, with your own caracteristcs, and the basics concepts about adaptive arrays, as powerfull spacial filter was aborded. Some adaptative algorithms was introduced too, these are integrants of the signals processing, and are answerable for weights update that influency directly in the radiation pattern of array. This study is based in a numerical analysis of adaptative array system behaviors related to the used antenna and array geometry types. All the simulations was done by Mathematica 4.0 software. The results for weights convergency, square mean error, gain, array pattern and supression capacity based the analisis made here, using RLS (supervisioned) and LSDRMTA (blind) algorithms / Esta disserta??o de mestrado vem trazer um estudo sobre alguns aspectos que influenciam na aplica??o de antenas adaptativas em sistemas celulares DS-CDMA (ou simplesmente CDMA). Foram detalhados alguns conceitos b?sicos a respeito do sistema celular e em geral, bem como sua evolu??o ao longo do tempo, dando ?nfase ? t?cnica CDMA, no que diz respeito aos c?digos de espalhamento e princ?pio de funcionamento. A partir disso, o ambiente de r?dio m?vel, com suas caracter?sticas peculiares, foi abordado, bem como os conceitos b?sicos em que se baseiam o sistema de antenas adaptativas com sua poderosa capacidade de filtragem espacial, capaz de reduzir significativamente o efeito de sinais indesejados. Tamb?m alguns algoritmos adaptativos foram discutidos, esses s?o integrantes do processamento dos sinais captados pelos arranjos, e s?o respons?veis pela atualiza??o dos pesos que de certa forma controlar?o o diagrama de radia??o do arranjo. No caso de sistemas CDMA, duas técnicas de equalização, em nível de chip, e um esquema de recepção com base em equalização e antenas inteligentes, também em nível de chip, são propostos. Este último esquema, denominado MT-STR (Multi-Target Space-Time Receiver), baseia-se na utilização de um conjunto de múltiplos objetivos em um receptor espaço-temporal. Para aplicações em sistemas OFDM, propõe-se uma técnica de equalização no domínio do tempo e uma outra técnica com antenas adaptativas também no domínio do tempo. As técnicas apresentadas para sistemas CDMA foram testadas e simuladas em uma plataforma de simulação especialmente desenvolvida para sistemas celulares de terceira geração (WCDMA- UMTS). Por outro lado, as técnicas propostas para OFDM foram testadas em uma plataforma de simulação desenvolvida para o Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão Digital - SBTVD. No contexto dos trabalhos de desenvolvimento do SBTVD, desenvolveu-se também nesta tese um sub-sistema de sincronização para o Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão Digital, implementado em dispositivos FPGA e integrado ao Sistema MI-SBTVD - Modulação Inovadora para o SBTVD / Abstract: Different techniques for equalization and adaptive antenna arrays for CDMA and OFDM systems are investigated and proposed in this thesis. For CDMA systems, two equalization techniques at chip level and a reception scheme based on joint equalization and smart antennas, also at chip level, are proposed. The latter scheme, a Multi-Target Space-Time Receiver - MT-STR, is based on a set of multiple objectives in a space-time receiver. For applications in OFDM systems, an equalization technique and an adaptive antenna array scheme, both in the time domain, are proposed. The techniques presented for CDMA systems have been tested and simulated on a software platform specifically designed for third generation cellular systems (WCDMA, UMTS). On the other hand, the proposed techniques for OFDM have been tested in a simulation platform specially developed for the Brazilian Digital Television System - SBTVD. In the context of the developments for the SBTVD project, an OFDM synchronization technique for an advanced DTV system has also been implemented in this thesis. A framework for responsive content adaptation in electronic display networks

Recent trends show an increase in the availability and functionality of handheld devices, wireless network technology, and electronic display networks. We propose the novel integration of these technologies to provide wireless access to content delivered to large-screen display systems. Content adaptation is used as a method of reformatting web pages to display more appropriately on handheld devices, and to remove unwanted content. A framework is presented that facilitates content adaptation, implemented as an adaptation layer, which is extended to provide personalization of adaptation settings and response to network conditions. The framework is implemented as a proxy server for a wireless network, and handles HTML and XML documents. Once a document has been requested by a user, the HTML/XML is retrieved and parsed, creating a Document Object Model tree representation. It is then altered according to the user’s personal settings or predefined settings, based on current network usage and the network resources available. Three adaptation techniques were implemented; spatial representation, which generates an image map of the document, text summarization, which creates a tree view representation of a document, and tag extraction, which replaces specific tags with links. Three proof-of-concept systems were developed in order to test the robustness of the framework. A system for use with digital slide shows, a digital signage system, and a generalized system for use with the internet were implemented. Testing was performed by accessing sample web pages through the content adaptation proxy server. Tag extraction works correctly for all HTML and XML document structures, whereas spatial representation and text summarization are limited to a controlled subset. Results indicate that the adaptive system has the ability to reduce average bandwidth usage, by decreasing the amount of data on the network, thereby allowing a greater number of users access to content. This suggests that responsive content adaptation has a positive influence on network performance metrics.

Web-based M-learning system for ad-hoc learning of mathematical concepts amongst first year students at the University of Namibia

In the last decade, there has been an increase in the number of web-enabled mobile devices, offering a new platform that can be targeted for the development of learning applications. Worldwide, developers have taken initiatives in developing mobile learning (M-learning) systems to provide students with access to learning materials regardless of time and location. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether it is viable for first year students enrolled at the University of Namibia (UNAM) to use mobile phones for ad-hoc learning of mathematical concepts. A system, EnjoyMath, aiming to assist students in preparing for tests, examinations, review contents and reinforce knowledge acquired during traditional classroom interactions was designed and implemented. The EnjoyMath system was designed and implemented through the use of the Human Centred Design (HCD) methodology. Two revolutions of the four-step process of the HCD cycle were completed in this study. Due to the distance between UNAM and Rhodes University (where the researcher was based), the researcher could not always work in close relation with the UNAM students. Students from the Extended Study Unit (ESU) at Rhodes University were therefore selected in the first iteration of the project due to their proximity to the researcher and their similar demographics to the first year UNAM students, while the UNAM students were targeted in the second iteration of the study. This thesis presents the outcome of the two pre-intervention studies of the first-year students' perceptions about M-learning conducted at Rhodes University and UNAM. The results of the pre-intervention studies showed that the students are enthusiastic about using an M-learning system, because it would allow them to put in more time to practice their skills whenever and wherever they are. Moreover, the thesis presents the different stages undertaken to develop the EnjoyMath system using Open Source Software (PHP and MySQL). The results of a user study (post-intervention) conducted with participants at UNAM, ascertained the participants' perception of the usability of the EnjoyMath system and are also presented in this thesis. The EnjoyMath system was perceived by the participants to be "passable"; hence an M-learning system could be used to compliment an E-learning system at UNAM.

The use of mobile commerce to improve the services of life insurance post sale activities

Mobile commerce, due to its inherent characteristics of mobility and reachability in enhancing personalized services provides an excellent means for life insurers to exploit such avenue in their service offerings. The objective of this study was to determine whether mobile commerce can be used to improve the services of life insurance post-sale activities. This objective was achieved with the relevant literature and empirical study. To accomplish the objective of this treatise, a triangulated research approach was selected and a multiple-case study consisting of four cases was conducted. The four cases selected comprised of leading insurers with large market share in the life insurance market in South-Africa. The primary data were collected through questionnaire and face-to-face interviews with selected respondents. The main finding shows that the respondents had a positive view about mobile commerce and its application in their companies. This was demonstrated by 80 percent of respondents who agreed that mobile commerce was more of an opportunity rather than a challenge or even a threat for the life insurance market. The results also indicate that customer relationship management, mobile messaging services and field service automation functions were used by all the insurers; although minor discrepancies were observed due to the efficiency of each firms IT infrastructure. The Internet was found to assist in the collection of more precise data, to increase service performing abilities. Some of the major obstacles that were found to hinder the deployment of mobile commerce in the industry were security concerns, low and infrequent internet usage and performance by supporting industries. Cumbersome and inefficient legacy systems were declared as the greatest technological weakness particularly by respondents from case 1 and 2. Conversely, hardware and network infrastructure, lack of software packages, lack of technical expertise and the fear of disintermediation was rated low in hindering the deployment of mobile commerce. However, according to the findings the key benefits derived from engaging in increased mobile commerce activities include enhancing customer contact and service, more transparency and speed of claims management, increasing client retention and policy extension rates hence increasing overall company profit.

A model to measure the maturuty of smartphone security at software consultancies

Smartphones are proliferating into the workplace at an ever-increasing rate, similarly the threats that they pose is increasing. In an era of constant connectivity and availability, information is freed up of constraints of time and place. This research project delves into the risks introduced by smartphones, and through multiple cases studies, a maturity measurement model is formulated. The model is based on recommendations from two leading information security frameworks, the COBIT 4.1 framework and ISO27002 code of practice. Ultimately, a combination of smartphone specific risks are integrated with key control recommendations, in providing a set of key measurable security maturity components. The subjective opinions of case study respondents are considered a key component in achieving a solution. The solution addresses the concerns of not only policy makers, but also the employees subjected to the security policies. Nurturing security awareness into organisational culture through reinforcement and employee acceptance is highlighted in this research project. Software consultancies can use this model to mitigate risks, while harnessing the potential strategic advantages of mobile computing through smartphone devices. In addition, this research project identifies the critical components of a smartphone security solution. As a result, a model is provided for software consultancies due to the intense reliance on information within these types of organisations. The model can be effectively applied to any information intensive organisation.
