Egyptian nationalism, 1882-1919 : elite competition, transnational networks, empire, and independenceTassin, Kristin Shawn 10 February 2015 (has links)
This thesis studies the formulation and expression of Egyptian nationalism in the period 1882-1919. In particular, it argues that Egyptian nationalism, rather than having the territorial nation-state as the highest form of nationalist expression, was composed of multiple overlapping and contingent identities. Furthermore, this thesis will draw attention to inter-and intra- elite rivalries between power bases within Egypt, including the office of the Khedive, the urban elite, landowners, European powers, and Ottoman representatives; and the way in which these vying groups affected the growth and composition of the Egyptian nationalist movement. This thesis also contends that the policies and ideologies of Egyptian nationalists were both contingent and fluid, as were the self-identities of the Egyptian population. Egyptian nationalism in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries took many of its characteristics and methodologies from the global context of competing imperialisms as well as trans-national anti-colonial movements. Therefore, this thesis seeks to locate Egyptian nationalism in the period 1882-1919 within the global and local context of competing power bases and popular expectations. / text

Lady of the Women of the Worlds: Exploring Shi'i Piety and Identity Through a Consideration of Fatima al-Zahra'Rowe, Ruth E. January 2008 (has links)
This thesis seeks to explore and survey the different understandings of Fatima bt. Muhammad "al-Zahra'" in different Shi'i social, religious, and political contexts. This investigation situates Fatima within a larger Islamic conceptualization of the saint or holy figure. Her liminal status in close proximity to the divine grants her a potency that facilitates her continued importance to Shi'i Muslims, though her memory differs in time and place. The contexts for this discussion range from Arabia in the centuries after her death, Safavid and Qajar Persia and modern Iran, and South Asia. Memories of Fatima reflect the concerns of Shi'i communities, political and religious leaders, and individuals for whom she remains a saint; she serves as a mechanism by which holiness is accessed and communities and persons are created, consolidated, preserved, and understood. For the scholar, Fatima provides invaluable insight into creative religious change through the lens of the Shi'i Islam.

The socio-political tranquility of Hyderabad-Deccan preceding 1948 facilitated much educational and cultural advancement. He began writing at age 18, and thereafter he dedicated his life to literary pursuits. Today, he has written over 100 books and 900 articles; he speaks over 20 languages and writes in over 10 languages. Along with one of his major areas of focus, Islamic constitutional law, he has written on a variety of other subject areas, ranging from Islamic theology to Islamic history, from Qur'anic exegesis to Orientalism. / This thesis attempts to study five books in the field of Islamic constitutional law by Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah in order to provide a sample to judge and analyze his scholarship. Against the background of Hamidullah's historical and political context coupled with his high level of religiosity, the thesis will examine his utilization of the scientific approach throughout his writings. This thesis furthermore looks at the potential reasons he chose the path of study that he did, dedicating his entire life to the literary sphere and to a lesser degree the political sphere. It focuses on Hamidullah's thought and methodology as they emerged from his social and political background and as he expressed them in his literary achievements. This thesis, therefore, sets out to develop a critical analysis of Hamidullah's works, his philosophical perspective, and his contribution to contemporary scholarship. / Hamidullah has contributed to Islamic scholarship by making available Islamic literature to mixed audiences since he follows the scientific approach, writes in a variety of languages, and covers a wide range of unique topics. The influence of Imam al-Juwayni on the theology of Imam al-GhazaliAbdullah, Ismail Haji January 1996 (has links)
This thesis seeks to study in depth the influence of Imam al-Juwayni on Imam al-Ghazali's discussion of theology and whether or not the latter's ideas are properly derived from the former. The first chapter deals with an analysis of the life of both the Imams against the background of the religious milieu of their time. The second chapter discuss the views of the two Imams on Ilm al-Kalam. The third chapter attempts to compare and contrast Imam al-Juwayni's and Imam al- Ghazali's approach to the doctrine of the origin of the world and the existence of God. In the fourth chapter we assess the views of the two Imams on the problem of the attributes of God. The fifth chapter deals with the question of human actions and free will. The final chapter present their views on prophethood and messengership. While many Islamic scholars have a vague notion that Imam al-Ghazali's ideas on theology depend heavily upon Imam al-Juwayni, this thesis attempts to prove that Imam al-Ghazali's theological position and views have been greatly influenced by his teacher, Imam al-Juwayni. This work sets out to show this in detail.

[The] place of reason in 'Abduh's theology: its impact on his theological system and viewsNasution, Harun January 1963 (has links)
Reason is an important focus-word in ‘ Abduh’s worldview and has a great influence' on his theological system and news. Because of his position of ascribing' great powers to reason and limited- functions to revelation, his system and views are in glaring contradiction with those of the Ash'ariyah who have a distrust in the power of reason and great reliance on revelation. His system and views, on the other hand, greatly resemble those of the Mu’tazilah who have been wel1-known for their high appreciation of the power- of reason and little reliance on revelation. With those of the maturidiyah in both their Samarqandi and Bukhara branches, who adopt an intermediate position pertaining to the power of reason and the function of revelation, Abduh' s theological system and views have many disagreements. Contrary to the prevalent opinion Abduh is neither an Ash’arI, nor a maturidi, nor an eclectic. He is rather a Mu' tazili.

The Khawaarij in past and the present, with special emphasis on their presence in SomaliaOsman, Ahmed Sheikh Mohamed 11 1900 (has links)
The research aims to establish in a holistic manner the facts about the Khawtirij sect, its
history, beliefs and activities, and the major events it experienced, together with
knowledge about and principles of its different sub·groups. The research also sheds
light on the lama 'at al- Takfir Wa L-Hijrah's activities whether in Egypt or in Somalia.
The thesis scrutinizes the definition of extremism and terrorism in contrast to Islam's
message of tolerance and justice.
Within this context, it also clarifies disagreements deemed reprehensible by Islam.
This study found that Islam promotes unity and condemns disputes, fanaticism,
extremism and factionalism since it is a religion of moderation and tolerance. The
Khawarij is a deviant group which can be described as a terrorist organization in
modern parlance.
The /ama 'at Takfir Wa L-Hijrah is nothing more than a modern version of the Khawiin"j
which ad heres to the same beliefs as its predecessor. It has a visible presence in
Somaliaand aU its actions confirm the original apostacising ideology of the . Khawiirij
Such actions are not trivial; before embarking on them stri ct conditions and regulations
have to be followed. The noble Prophet (peace be upon him) and Muslim scholars have
warned against these practices when correct procedure is flouted.
Some of the most commonly used words are: Islam, reli gion, nat jon, Somalia, Khawiirij,
sect, faith, principles, disagreement, apostasy, Allah, Prophet Muhammad, Qur'an and
