_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research focus on the analysis of the cult to the body phenomenon, particularly the cult to thinness between women. In order to give a structure to this analysis, three dimensions were delimited: aesthetics practices, defined as successive frequency in academies of gymnastics; nourishing practices, characterized as the submission to diets and nourishing restrictions; and, eventually, intervention practices, those in which women submit themselves to medical-surgical interventions. In this investigation, I prioritized the discourses of women that frequently go to a female only academy of gymnastics in the Distrito Federal, chosen because it was the first international franchise directed for the feminine public to act in Brazil. With that set, the research went on to investigate how women go through the dimensions of the cult to the body, their motivations and the meanings given to thinness. Considering the important place of the body in the construction of the identities of gender, in the thinking of practices of cult to the body between the women, it was chosen the perspective of gender, linking one dialogue between the feminist theories and the references of the social theory. The medical and media discourses were pointed as the main sources of “knowledge” about the body and spreaders of “certainties” about as to manage the bodyness with views to health, to beauty and to happiness, preserving as a common ground, the thinness. By the use of images, verbal and non verbal discourses, the exalted preoccupation with the body as an obligation for women, becomes also one contemporary style of life.
