Traficante, Christian, 1975- January 2007 (has links)
This work described a methodology to design ecological networks for a territorial scale, as an instrument for territorial and urban planning. Under the sustainability paradigm, it represented a means to mitigate the phenomenon of habitat fragmentation. Therefore, the methodology was applied to the triangle of the municipalities of Agudos - Bauru - Piratininga, in San Paolo State, Brazil, in order to support the ongoing work for the Participatory Plan for the municipality of Agudos. The area characterization was carried out highlighting the real capabilities of the territory in terms of suitability for the implantation of green corridors for ecological networks. Suitability analysis is determined by a multicriteria evaluation with weighted linear combination method (WLC). A set of environmental and physical information about the study area was derived from pedology investigations developed during the land use capability stage. This information were reconsidered and completed to take into account the biodiversity conservation issue and the green system preservation issue, and later evaluated by the WLC method. Over the suitability map, the best paths for the ecological network were identified through a least cost method in order to interconnect the nodal point of the network, that means, ecological valuable patches with core area and fluvial strips near Batalha River, the most important river in the region. The assessment of the ecological network proposals is based on the landscape ...(Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Modélisation de l'élaboration du rendement et de la qualité de l'ananas Queen Victoria : application à la conception de systèmes de culture durables à la Réunion / Modeling yield and quality of Queen Victoria pineapples : application the design of sustainable cropping systems in Reunion Island

Dorey, Elodie 16 December 2014 (has links)
Pineapple production is increasing on Réunion Island and represents the first fruit production, in terms of value and yield exported. The heterogeneity of climatic conditions on the island and the diversity of cultural practices, particularly with regard to nitrogen fertilization and irrigation, lead to a high variability in yield, gustatory quality of fruit and use of natural resources. The development of more sustainable cropping systems requires rethinking and optimizing the combination of agricultural practices, by taking into account the specificities of the different production areas. An ad-hoc model, SIMPIÑA was developed to describe the growth and development of pineapple plant and fruit quality (sugar and acid content) depending on climate and cultural practices (sucker weight at planting, planting density, date of flowering induction, fertilization and irrigation). This model has the particularity to integrate process-based model modules (plant growth, sugar content, water and nitrogen balance) and statistical modules (for predicting the acidity of fruit at harvest and the economic part). Cultural practices are taken into account through decision rules that may thus be assessed with the model. A typology of cultural practices was carried out based on interviews of 40 farmers all over Réunion Island and led to three farm's types with specific climatic and organizational constraints. SIMPIÑA was used to explore a wide range of combination of cultural practices, taking into account the constraints of each farm-type. We identified trends of cultural practices combinations which optimize the performances of the systems and that should be tested in the field. This integrative approach has led to significant advances in modeling pineapple production and in defining innovative cropping systems.

Subsídios ao planejamento do uso e ocupação do solo da área de influência do Reservatório de Volta Grande (MG), visando à manutenção dos seus usos múltiplos / Subsidies to the planning of use and occupation of the soil in the influential area of Volta Grande Reservoir (MG), aiming at the maintenance of its multiples

Márcio Augusto de Sousa Nogueira 13 November 2001 (has links)
This work presents a preliminary diagnosis of the sediments silting up the Reservoir of the Hydro-electric Power Station of Volta Grande (MG), offering subsidies to the planning of use and occupation of the soil, aiming at the maintenance of the multiple uses of this reservoir. The development of thematic maps, as well as the area distribution of the sediments silting up, was obtained from the use of the multicriteria analysis. The risk maps obtained, even using different factors, show coincidental areas of medium and high vulnerability to the soil loss and sedimentation, pointing out, therefore, the need of planning to the recovery, conservation and rational use of the soil and water resources.

Spatial planning for windenergy development using GIS : A study of Västernorrland County

Manolan Kandy, Deepa January 2018 (has links)
Countries across the globe have started taking measures to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions andto power the future with more sustainable forms of energy. One such initiative towards sustainableenergy generation is through wind energy. The wind energy contribution has shown a drastic increasein Sweden during the last few years. However there are several issues due to improper siting of windmills. This thesis aims to conduct a multi-criteria evaluation to determine suitable wind farm sites inVästernorrland County. The spatial planning through multi-criteria evaluation is done jointly usinganalytical hierarchy processing and weighted linear combination in ArcMap. There are 29 criteriataken into account and the buffer zones from each criterion are decided based on Swedish legislation, discussions with stakeholders and from similar previous studies. Three scenarios namely green, economy and tourism are created giving emphasize on the aspects as the title implies. The scenarioeconomy has the least area with very high suitability scores when compared to the other two scenarios. The results obtained for the three scenarios are grouped into classes with suitability scores. About 60%of the total area is unsuitable for wind farm installations and most of the area has less to moderaterange of suitability. The major constraints that restrict the wind mill installations are spaces with landcover like water, roads and national protected areas. Based on the suitability scores, the best three sitesare finally selected which covers the three scenario aspects. Other sites are excluded due to reasons likelow suitability, closeness to the county boundary and too small in size. Among the best three sites, twosites already have permission to build wind farms. The proposed third site is about 2.5 squarekilometres located to the south-east of the county. In conclusion, the project result not only shows thatthere are more potential / Länder över hela världen har börjat vidta åtgärder för att minska utsläppen av växthusgaser och att iframtiden övergå till mer hållbara energikällor.

Modeling Present and Future Physical Coastal Vulnerability to Climate Change: North Shore, Prince Edward Island

MacDonald, Katelyn January 2014 (has links)
The IPCC has identified small islands and coastal zones among regions most vulnerable to climate change. The geomorphological characteristics of Prince Edward Island (PEI), such as highly erodible sandstone bedrock and low elevation, contribute to a high degree of physical vulnerability to climate change. The province is highly susceptible to physical impacts of climate change including relative sea-level rise and increased rates of coastline retreat. In order to assess the physical coastal vulnerability of the ParCA study area of the North Shore, PEI, a model employing Geographic Information Systems (GIS), multi-criteria evaluation (MCE), and time step analysis is formulated. The physical vulnerability of the North Shore for the year 2010 was quantified in terms of wind-wave exposure condition, morphological resiliency, and permanent and episodic flood risk. These results are employed as model inputs to predict the shoreline for the subsequent time steps (2050, 2100), which are again analyzed to estimate future physical coastal vulnerability. Such an approach allows for updated predictions in intent to improve accuracy when compared to linear extrapolation. Finally, areas of highest priority for adaptation measures are quantified for each time step. This physical vulnerability analysis together with community-based and socioeconomic coastal vulnerability analyses will portray the comprehensive vulnerability of the North Shore to current and future effects of climate change.

Brito, Mariana Madruga de January 2014 (has links)
Mass movements are natural phenomena that are part of the surface dynamic processes that shape the Earth’s surface. When they occur in urban areas, can cause economic losses, social impacts and, in extreme cases, losses of human lives. The implementation of preventive measures to mitigate those damages requires the identification of the areas prone to these events. Therefore, the aim of this dissertation was to develop a methodological approach to map landslide susceptibility at the municipality of Porto Alegre-RS, with the use of geoprocessing tools. The variables used were: slope, geology, distance from lineaments, flow accumulation and land use, which were processed in the Idrisi software. After the standardization of the variables through the application of fuzzy functions and the direct assignment of notes, the importance of each one on the predisposition of landslides was defined, based on the opinion of experts, with the support of the technique entitled analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The integration of the variables was based on weighted linear combination, resulting in two scenarios: the first with the natural susceptibility and the second with the induced susceptibility. The results indicate that the most susceptible areas to landslide are located in the hills of the Crista de Porto Alegre and in the isolated hills located at the south of the municipality. The remaining area has, in general, low susceptibility. The validation of the results obtained an overall accuracy of 95% and 94%, respectively for Scenarios 1 and 2. The areas under the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve were respectively 0.960 and 0.966, indicating that the variables and weights were adequate and both scenarios are robust. Thus, it is noted that geoprocessing tools are useful to map the landslide susceptibility, since they make the mapping process and its updates agile, and give more clarity and transparency to the susceptibility assessment process. In addition, the proposed method reduces efforts in the early stages of risk management, enabling the manager to prioritize the most susceptible areas for detailed mappings. This demonstrates that decision support routines, such as those used in this dissertation, can be incorporated into susceptibility studies, providing important information for the urban planning.
