The compilation of albums began almost upon the invention of photography and has continued to this day, migrating now into the realms of electronic and digital imagery. The private album, which includes, but is not limited to, the family album, is a hybrid of flexibility and conservatism--situational, syncretic and personal in its contents and organization. Interpretation of an album is correspondingly challenging, especially when the album has been separated from its compiler and placed in a public collection. / The McCord Museum of Canadian History has a substantial collection of private albums ranging in date from the 1860s to the 1960s. The collection has been assembled mainly from private donations as a reflection of Canadian social history. Aside from its breadth, the collection offers the researcher a degree of assurance that the albums represent the work of amateur compilers. Bringing this collection to light and raising the museum's consciousness of the value of these objects as albums have been important aspects of this study. / The primary focus, however, has been the discovery of an interpretational framework, a way of reconstituting the intentions and methods of the compiler. Albums have been interpreted as visual equivalents of analogous forms, such as journals or Family Bibles, but these categories fail to contain the full nature of compilatory expression which is often multiplistic, redundant, serpentine and obscure. The private album transferred to the public institution needs to be considered in the full context of its creation and presentation--the merging of visual and oral traditions. / A multidisciplinary review of the literature outlines the paradigms and metaphors that inflect our understanding of photographic albums as tools of communication and sources for artists. The function of the album as an aide-memoire for individual life history has long been recognized, but the detailed application of orality's condition and structure to the photographic album is here an original contribution to knowledge. The reconciliation of photography and orality expands our understanding of both and restores the heuristic conversation that brought the photographic album into being.

Cette étude s'inscrit dans un contexte scientifique multidisciplinaire englobé par le musée, et justifiée par un intérêt collectif de plus en plus marqué pour l'étude de la culture matérielle. Cette étude tend à démontrer l'importance d’une conservation adéquate des collections d'objets de tissu afin de favoriser et de faciliter la recherche nécessitant l'examen de spécimens matériels. À travers le regard interprétatif de l'ethnologie, l'objet, la collection et la conservation sont définis dans un premier temps. Dans un second temps, un processus théorique d'élaboration d'un système d'entreposage pour des collections d'objets de tissu est détaillé, illustré par les exemples des systèmes élaborés au Musée McCord et au Royal Ontario Museum. Ce mémoire explore le concept de diffusion des archives à l’ère du Web 2.0. Dans le contexte nord-américain, la diffusion en archivistique englobe les aspects de promotion, de mise en valeur et de communication des archives. Le Web 2.0 offre un potentiel très intéressant pour la diffusion d’archives. Ce moyen de diffusion est défini comme étant un ensemble de principes et de technologies qui crée et facilite l’interaction entre plusieurs individus. Peu d’études ont été menées sur la diffusion des archives à l’ère du Web 2.0, c’est pourquoi notre recherche s’est intéressée à un milieu qui a intégré le Web 2.0 afin d’instaurer un dialogue avec ses usagers, connus et potentiels, pour exploiter ses archives et augmenter sa visibilité, soit le Musée McCord. Dans cette étude de cas simple certains membres du personnel du Musée McCord ont été rencontrés, afin de découvrir les motivations de l’institution à se lancer dans l’utilisation d’outils issus de ces technologies. De plus, l’étude a permis d’observer quels outils ont été choisis, comment et pourquoi. Ensuite, les avantages et les désavantages de cette nouvelle utilisation ont été mis en lumière. Enfin, les étapes de la mise en place d’outils du Web 2.0 sont exposées. / This master thesis explores the concept of archival dissemination in the Web 2.0 era. In the North American context, dissemination from an archival perspective includes the promotion, valorization and communication of archives. Web 2.0 represents new and interesting opportunites for dissemination as it facilitates interactions among individuals. As few studies examined this question, we were interested in studying an organisation where Web 2.0 platforms had been integrated to establish a dialog with their known and potential users, in order to enhance the exploitation of their archives as well as to increase their visibility. In this case study of the McCord Museum of Canadian History, we interviewed members of the personnel involved in the implementation of Web 2.0 platforms to discover the motivations behind the adoption of those technologies, as well as to describe the selected tools and the way they were implemented. The advantages and disadvantages of these new dissemination plateforms were highlighted. In conclusion, we propose guidelines to successfully implement Web 2.0 tools.
