Inicia estabelecendo uma comparação entre a prática museal brasileira e os compêndios teóricos europeus e norte-americanos produzidos na mesma época. Em seguida, aborda a dinâmica da formação das coleções museais brasileiras, envolvendo desde os processos de aquisição de acervos até a dimensão que estes adquirem dentro dos museus, enquanto objetos ao mesmo tempo científicos e museológicos. Não menos complexa é a relação dos museus com os edifícios que os abrigam, tema abordado no terceiro capítulo e que discute não apenas a edificação em si, como também o lugar emblemático que ele ocupa na malha urbana, a distribuição espacial das coleções no interior do museu e a forma como o edifício do museu se relaciona com a comunidade na qual se insere. Por fim, analisa o perfil dos profissionais de museus e os fazeres museais da época, destacando a organização das coleções (com destaque para a seção de numismática), as exposições e as atividades educativas. / This research addresses the historical constitution of the Brazilian museological knowledge, between the second half of the nineteenth century and the first two decades of the twentieth century, since from the formation of the collections, the definition of the physical space for the installation of museums and activities performed by them. It starts with a comparison between the Brazilian museum practice and theoretical textbooks and the European and American ones produced at the same time. Then it addresses the dynamics of the formation of the Brazilian museological collections, tackling from the purchasing processes of those collections up to the importance that they acquire within the museums, while being objects at once scientific and museologicals. No less complex is the relation between museums and the buildings where they are established, a subject which is studied in the third chapter, and that discusses not only the building itself, as well as the emblematic place it occupies in the urban area, the spatial distribution of the collections within the museum and how the museum building relates to the community in which it operates. Finally, it analyzes the profile of museum professionals and the museological doings of the period mentioned above, while emphasizing the organization of the collections (especially the numismatic section), the exhibitions and educational activities.
