Why High School Students Participate in Band

Varner, Edward Lee 30 March 2018 (has links)

The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that motivate high school students to participate in school band. The relationships between music education, academic success, and social engagement in school were explored. A survey questionnaire and interview questions were used to generate response data from 45 high school band members. Data were gathered, coded, and analyzed using qualitative survey and structured interview design techniques. A systematic approach was used to create a viable narrative that, when added to existing literature, provided a better understanding of the topic for those decision makers struggling to find justifications for how and why band is an important option for high school students. Findings from this study support earlier research and provide a strong case for the claim that many students are intellectually, emotionally, expressively, and musically nurtured by membership in school band. Stress relief was a powerful theme throughout student responses and many students indicated that band was an important place where they were able to build their strongest support relationships. The information acquired from this study provided insight into student perceptions about the value of band participation from environmental, behavioral, and cognitive viewpoints and highlighted the importance of band as a social and emotional support space where students are able to find sanctuary from the stressors of their lives.

'There can be no difference in faith among certain men but rather a difference in words' : Mendelssohn's Kunstreligion as a set of beliefs and an aesthetic language

Koch, Sabine January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation explores the influence that nineteenth-century tenets of Kunstreligion exerted on Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's aesthetic thought. Widely defined as the merging of religious and aesthetic notions in writings about the arts, Kunstreligion has frequently been interpreted as a manifestation of spiritual beliefs and a movement with which Mendelssohn was not affiliated. The aid of this thesis is to challenge these claims, and to establish the rootedness of sacralised conceptions of music in non-religious inspirations and particulars of language use. Placing Mendelssohn's fascination with church worship, religious morality as well as the human and the divine in the context of wider philosophies of art and religion, the dissertation explores how the composer availed himself of art-religious vocabulary in his correspondence, examining his use of language both in terms of his own religious upbringing and the intellectual discourse of his age. Mendelssohn's Kunstreligion was very practically oriented. reflecting his belief that music was a religious language of feelings and proclamation, his performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion and subsequent compositions manifested a concern to serve educative purposes related to historicism as well as religious edification and instruction. An analysis of how he viewed these activities in his correspondence reveals that comparisons of concerts with church sermons were not only meant metaphorically but point to objectives that he hoped to accomplish as a man and an artist. His reflections on attributes oft he 'human' and the 'divine' elsewhere suggest a belief that artists were blessed by God and that superior works of art were either God's creation or deserved to be described as 'divine' in the sense of 'excellent.' As these overlapping religio-aesthetic concepts and meanings indicate, in Mendelssohn's writings, Kunstreligion could be both a form of religion that was associated with Schleiermacher's theology and an eclectic verbal language that was creative, often qualitiative, sometimes irons, and, to that effect, typically Mendelssohnian.

Abstract: To do a research on the processes of teaching body percussion of Barbatuques is the main objective of this dissertation. For this, the text is divided into two stages: the first tells the story of people and meetings that allowed the construction of an artistic nucleus with a pedagogical action developed during these years of practical experience of Barbatuques. The second part gives visibility to the practices themselves, describing the method created and developed by the group and its members. The research was based on the collection of materials produced by the group since its inception (such as textbooks and texts on the educational work of the group, videos and CDs), as well as "recurring" interviews with three protagonists of Barbatuques. Finally, relations are established between some authors and thinkers in the field of music education, chosen to dialogue with the educational purpose of the group, in order to contribute to new ways of thinking about the processes of teaching body percussion. / Mestrado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Mestre em Educação

Festivais de coros do Rio Grande do Sul (1963-1978) : práticas músico-educativas de coros, regentes e plateia

Teixeira, Lúcia Helena Pereira January 2015 (has links)
This research, of qualitative frame (PIRES, 2010; GONZÁLEZ REY, 2005; MELUCCI, 2005), had as objective to understand the music-educational practices taken place in the Rio Grande do Sul Choir Festivals, held during the period 1963-1978 in the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Specific objectives of this research were: 1) To analyze the constitution of the Choir Festivals; 2) To exam how social actors were mobilized for the/from the Choir Festivals, as well as the engagement strategies used in it, the cooperation networks and interdependence which allowed the events to take place and the wefts which involved social actors in that specific context; 3) To interpret the participation of choirs, conductors and public, as well as the demands requested to the participants of the Festivals; 4) To analyze which were the conceptions about choral singing, which apprenticeships and musical formations occurred in the/from the participation in the events, and which were the contributions left by the Choir Festivals. As a research procedure I worked with oral history, with which I could combine written resources (newspaper articles of that period, musical programs and letters) with oral resources (pre-interviews and interviews). To understand the networks established by the participants of the Choir Festivals I used the concept of configuration or figuration by Norbert Elias (1997; 2008). Through the content of the analyzed Festivals, it were useful the theoretical visions that focus choral singing as a sociopolitical or nationalistic movement (CHINALI, 2009; GILIOLI, 2008; SILVA, 2001, 2012; SANTOS, 2012; SOUZA 1991, 1999, 2007). Studies about art festivals also helped to throw light over the empirical field (FLÉCHET, 2011, 2013; GOETSCHEL; HIDIROGLOU, 2013). Musiceducational practices were constituted and propelled from the action of the participants agents of the Festivals. An organized committee was the start to institutionalize the Rio Grande do Sul Choir Association, which began to mobilize internal actors (choirs, conductor, press and public), and external actors (authorities, governments, sponsors and supporters). To examine what was requested and what dynamics moved conductors, choirs and public to participate in the Choir Festivals, helped to understand the apprenticeships generated and driven by the context. The results of the research show the music formation of singers, conductors and public generated from conceptions of choral singing and the habitus (ELIAS, 1997) generated in the/by the participation in the Festivals, as well as other contributions driven by those events.
