Timber supply and economic impact of mountain pine beetle salvage strategies

Moreira-Munoz, Simon 05 1900 (has links)
To address the scale mountain pine beetle (MPB) outbreak in British Columbia, salvage has become fully integrated with timber supply strategies. The objective of this thesis is to assess the economic impact of different salvage strategies depending on different attack levels, decay rates, and stakeholder discount rates. The study area is located in N.E. British Columbia where the MPB has not yet reached its peak and where susceptible to attack stands account for 40% of the area. Salvage strategies were modelled with a timber supply model (Woodstock) which uses a linear programming type II optimization approach. Performance of the model was assessed over a range of indicators such as NPV, profit, salvage proportion, species composition, inventory levels, and non-recoverable volume. Sensitivity analyses were conducted on harvest flow, discount rate, and ending inventory. The model was very sensitive to the intensity of attack and less sensitive to the decay level. The high level of attack resulted in large volume losses, mostly as un-salvaged inventory. Although allowable annual cut (AAC) uplifts have an economic benefit, they do not necessarily maximize the salvage of pine. Non-pine species are an important component of the salvage and these species are also essential for the future timber supply. If the objective is to ensure quality and quantity of the future forest, policies have to complement AAC uplifts by strongly encouraging the salvage of mainly pine-leading stands and management options that minimize the “by-catch” of non-pine species and minimize destruction of advanced regeneration during salvage. However, this has an opportunity cost for the private industry where the objective is to maximize profit. If the salvage strategy focuses on decreasing the impact on cash flows, achieving desirable ending inventory levels, avoiding salvage of stands after shelf-life, and reducing impact on non-attack species, then the current harvest level will likely lead to a mid-term timber supply fall-down. Using the fibre for bioenergy production is an alternative if managing for bioenergy can be integrated into harvest operations. However, unlike mill residues, the bioenergy supply has to fully account for harvest and transportation costs of dead wood to the mill. / Forestry, Faculty of / Graduate

Vyhodnocení investičního záměru: Výstavba bioplynové stanice Smržice / Investment project evaluation: Construction of the biogas power plant Smržice

Kalista, Michal January 2013 (has links)
The investor has to decide whether he realizes the investment in the biogas power plant Smržice with a certain installed capacity If implemented, the investor is entitled to the government-guaranteed purchase price of electricity fixed for 15 years. It is necessary to predict profits and cash flows of each period which are further used for dynamic investment evaluation methods for the purpose of investment decision making. The application of the net present value shows whether the investment project is acceptable or not. The sensitivity analysis is used to compare changes in inputs with its impact on the net present value. The biogas power plant Smržice is typical example of biogas power plants built in Czech Republic in 2011-12 due to the government economic support, so finally these conclusions are generalised for the whole branch of electricity production from biogas.

Analýza rizika strategického finančního plánu minipivovaru / Risk Analysis of the Strategic and Financial Plan of the Microbrewery

Vodička, Radek January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the masters thesis is to analyse the risk of the strategic and financial plan of a microbrewery as well as to decide whether the proposed investment project is feasible due to identified information of risk. The thesis describes and analyzes the environment of the particular enterprise by implementing a PEST Analysis, Porters Five Forces analysis, Financial Analysis, Internal Analysis and a SWOT Analysis. The result of the strategic analyses are implemented to propose an investment project with the appropriate financial plan of the investment and the Net Present Value calculation. The key risk factor is identified by implementing the Monte Carlo simulation followed by a Sensitivity Analysis and the impact of the key risk factor is analysed consecutively. Considering all the previous analyses and also ascertained information the recommendation is made to realize the investment as the result of the thesis.

Příprava a hodnocení ekonomické efektivnosti vybraného investičního projektu / preparation and evaluation of economic efficiency of selected investment project

Valášková, Petra January 2014 (has links)
The main goal of this study is to show a preparation of an investment project aimed on heating in a concrete company and to evaluate an economic effectiveness of the individual possible variants of the project. The project is unique due to particular financing from European union's grants and due to a goal of the company to meet new emission norm. The study is divided to three parts. In the first part, a theoretical one, is described a preparation of the project and an administration process of providing the grand from European Union funds. The second chapter deals with identification of the concrete investment project and the conditions of its evaluation. Moreover, important information about investor and circumstances of the investment project realization are discussed in this chapter. Finally, the process of the concrete grant approval is analyzed. The third part evaluates economic effectiveness according to cost measures and to net present value of the individual project variants. Because of a different lifespan of project variants the cost annual equivalent and the annuity equivalent has to be used. The results of cost measures and net present value are different. This pointes to the difference between cost only view and complex cash flow view. The final overall evaluation takes into consideration the ecologic part of the project. The final resolution has to make a compromise between various measurements. The study evaluates a real project. Therefore, the data are also based on reality.
