The darwinian theory of evolution is one of the main integrating axis of current biological knowledge. However, even with all the importance attributed to it, teaching evolution still presents challenges that have hindered their teaching and understanding. In the context of brazilian high school, it is noted that the way how the content of evolution lessons has been traditionally treated has limited the understanding of evolution as an integrating axis. It is important to recognize that the integration of the biological knowledge through evolution takes account its macroevolutionary scale and its pluralism of processes and patterns. However, the focus on natural selection, mutation, gradualism, and microevolution, common to evolution teaching, has neglected important evolutionary processes and patterns and the macroevolution. Then, emerges the challenge of teaching evolution in order to account for the connection between diverse evolutionary processes and patterns, to allow a pluralistic and integrated understanding. Guided by the theoretical-methodological frameworks of educational design research, I developed, in collaboration with a high school biology teacher, an investigation into the characteristics of a didactic sequence for teaching and understanding of evolution in a pluralistic and integrated way. This research will be reported over two articles: (a) The first article dealing with the preliminary study phase, from which the proposal of five design principles was developed for the planning of an evolutionary teaching approach that uses narratives of macroevolutionary events and considers the plurality of processes and patterns, and (b) The second dealing with the investigation of the first prototype elaborated from implementation of these principles in a real classroom context.
