In der estnischen Musikliteratur gibt es kaum Texte, die sich direkt mit Ästhetik befassen. Was man regelmäßig findet, sind Überblicke über die Musik und das Musikleben, Rezensionen und programmatische Artikel über die Aufgaben, vor denen die Musiker stehen. Hierin äußert sich eine praktische Ästhetik der jeweiligen Verfasser und eine gewisse Überzeugung, wie estnische Musik sein sollte und welche Aufgaben sie habe. Auf der Basis dieser Ansichten werden Werturteile über neue Werke und musikalische Ereignisse gefällt. Dabei sind diese Ansichten selbst möglicherweise ziemlich schwammig formuliert, sofern man sich ihrer überhaupt bewusst ist. Was für Ansichten waren das? Woher stammten sie? Eine Antwort hierauf können wir in der Musikliteratur, in der Musik selbst und auch im zeitgenössischen Musikleben suchen und dann annähernd beschreiben, welche ästhetischen Ansichten in Estland geherrscht haben.

In the current musicological discussion on the issues of historiography and the need to overcome the entrenched canons of historical writing, questions concerning the history of national music often become marginalised, and, to some extent, placed into a paradoxical situation.

The status of Latvian musicology at the beginning of the twenty-first century cannot be evaluated unequivocally. It is in manyways very complex - mainly due to financing problems and the draining of intellectual resources.

Antonio María Valencia (1902-1952) was one of the leading Colombian composers, pianists, and educators of his generation. His Dúo en forma de sonata (1926) for violin and piano serves as an early example of the composer's aesthetic. According to the programmatic description he sent to his mother, the Dúo depicts Valencia's "indelible impressions" of his homeland. Through structural and harmonic analysis, I examine the piece in relation to the composer's informal programmatic description. The analysis argues that the work poetically re-creates the landscape of Valencia's birthplace region through an international language, devoid of Colombian folk rhythms and melodies. Valencia proposes a different perspective on Colombian music as an alternative to the use of folk-based music elements that were predominant to Colombian music during his lifetime.
