Rios e terras : história ambiental de Goiás (1822-1850) /

Souza, Fabíula Sevilha de. January 2013 (has links)
Abstract: The research aims to understand the interaction between society and nature, from the analysis of the appropriation and exploitation of rivers and lands in the Province of Goiás. The time frame, 1822-1850, is marked, in general, by intensifying of the debates on the land and river issue. As background, there is the effort of Empire of Brazil to insert itself in the roll of "civilized nations", for what the nature, regarded as promising for the rational exploitation, is vested of a fundamental role. Regionally, it's characterized by the expansion of the land occupation, cattle-breeding, and the increase of the attempts to the agricultural activities and projects on the navigation of the main rivers of Goiás. Corresponding to the period between the end of the provision of allotments (sesmarias) and the enactment of the Land Act, we assume that there was in this time interval a legislative void that served as encouraging for the further messed advancement on new areas. What we propose, therefore, is the development of an environmental history of Goiás, whose focus is the examination of the dynamics of the construction and the consolidation of a legitimating conduct of the spendthrift and dilapidating exploitation of the resources of the Cerrado biome. With this bias is possible to think about the role assigned to nature in different dimensions: in everyday, in politics and in economy. / Mestre
