Delineou-se os processos históricos de suas implementações, enfatizando-se suas dimensões ambientais e sociais. A base documental da pesquisa foi constituída pelos planos, relatórios, atos e pronunciamentos governamentais, revistas e jornais, legislações, imagens cartográficas, além da literatura relacionada ao tema. A análise fundamentou-se nos princípios teóricos e metodológicos da História Ambiental. As evidências produzidas revelaram que águas, solos, florestas e subsolos foram ressignificados nos discursos e nas ações preconizadas no planejamento estatal. Esse processo refletiu uma concepção de natureza amazônica como fonte de recursos naturais para a manutenção e expansão do modelo de desenvolvimento adotado, que desconsiderou a dimensão histórica da região. Constatou-se durante a interpretação uma matriz teórico-metodológica nos textos dos planos, que indica uma continuidade e contiguidade entre eles. As medidas de teor ambientalista, incorporadas na elaboração dos planos, a partir de meados dos anos 1970, resultaram das pressões das instituições financeiras multilaterais, para assegurar recursos financeiros aos projetos em curso. Paralelamente, constituíram-se algumas iniciativas em defesa da Amazônia: intelectuais, movimentos sociais, instituições religiosas, camponeses, seringueiros e indígenas, com distintos interesses, recolocaram a discussão sobre a natureza. A compreensão da dimensão histórica que orientou as concepções de natureza nos diversos processos analisados possibilita a emergência de uma história social da Amazônia mais rica e plural / This thesis aims to analyze how Amazon nature was conceived and appropriated in the Amazon development plans elaborated to be implemented between 1955 and 1985. Historical processes and their implementation were delineated, emphasizing their social and environmental dimensions. The research document base was formed by the development plans, reports, government acts and statements, magazines and newspapers, legislations, cartographic images, besides the literature related to the theme. The analyses were based on the theoretical and methodological principles of Environmental History. The evidences produced revealed that water, soil, forests and subsoil acquired new meanings in statements and actions envisaged in state planning. This process reflected a conception of Amazon nature as a source of natural resources for maintenance and expansion of the adopted development model that did not take into consideration the region historical dimension. It was observed during the interpretation of a theoretical and methodological matrix in the wording of the plans that indicate continuity among them. The measures of environmental content, incorporated in the elaboration of the plans in the 1970s, resulted from pressures from multilateral financial institutions, to guarantee financial resources to ongoing projects. At the same time, some initiatives formed in defense of the Amazon by: intellectuals, social movements, religious institutions, peasants, rubber tappers and Indigenous people with distinctive interests, relocated the discussion on nature. The understanding of the historical dimension that guided the conceptions of nature in the various analyzed processes enable the emergence of a more diverse and richer social history of the Amazon.
